*cough* i've always liked yer posts kris. Tho sometimes they do tend to be a bit too 'direct' to be truly above 'reproach' as it were... the trick is to do things in such a way that the people that matter know what yer saying, the rest have no idea what yer talkin about.

Eltee, I promise you, no one has the first frickin clue what I'm talking about most of the time. Me included. Most are content to let me burble. The select few appear to want to confuse me (and usually succeed) by responding with a reply that doesn't seem to relate to what I said at all. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya. Oh. And the rest are just intimidated by me. I scawwy.

From: Maxx Monde Oh, so now the source is suspect because of the place it is posted? Interesting way to marginalize data you don't agree with, I should file that tactic for later use if I'm absolutely desperate during a debate, like you are.
Your second point, most players don't have enough L$ to bid for large parcels? No, what this means is that the auction process is being used by those with deep enough pockets to force all parcels out of the range of purchase by underfunded players. This is another side-effect of an oligopoly. Symptom of parasitic market cornering.
i am not marginalizing data. i respect LL's dominion on data. i do not agree with cory's analysis or your analysis. particularly yours as you draw too much conclusion from too little info. you completely misunderstood the second point. the second point is players who want large parcels are less likely to be willing to pay market value proportionately for them. 2k m2 for 60 USD is acceptably to most players. 64k m2 for 1920 USD does not seem to be. it has nothing to do with deep pockets. it has everything to do with the reality of scale. the land speculator inserts himself into the equation in the benefit of the small parcel consumer. to 512 m2 - 2048 m2 parcel buyers set the market value. beyond that, all i can say is that if LL corrects possible exploits through automation and regulation, i do not care to put my nose in other peoples business for personal satisfaction like you do. the data you need to calculate margins is available on the auctions website and inworld prices. if you want to see one groups earnings, then you will have to open everyones accounts to public scrutiny. land transactions are not independant of all other SL commerce. if you want to learn about success on the auctions, ask eltee. he followed my advice and bid just under market value and won a nice piece of land this week.

I admit being particularly tenacious today. It wasn't personal at all, just viewpoints and logic point-counterpoint, I thought.

Once upon a time there was a playground full of young children running round, screaming wildly and enjoying themselves hugely. If you were to walk past it, you’d think that the sound of laughter from this particular playground was much louder and more infectious than any ordinary playground. This was because the boys and girls had discovered a wonderful new game where once a week they could buy a playing card. These playing cards were bright and shiny with fantastical designs on them and all the children passed endless hours of fun trading and swapping these cards amongst themselves.
Each week the children eagerly awaited their lunchtime break on Friday afternoon, and they’d run off to Uncle Philip’s Shop where they could buy a shiney new card. They’d wait impatiently to hand over 5 pennies from their lunch money, perhaps foregoing an apple or a banana to buy it; which probably wouldn’t have pleased their parents if they’d found out.
Then one Friday as Uncle Philip opened the door to his shop as usual, they noticed a sign in the window. They were all very bright kids with reading ages well above the average, so they had no difficulty in understanding the scrawled message straight away. There had been a shortage of cards from the factory that week, so from now on most of the cards would be sold in just one packet of 100 cards, and this packet would cost 5 whole pounds. The sound of a room full of very disappointed children is not a happy sound, and indeed, if you had been in the room at that moment, I’m sure you would have cried too. What were they to do? Even if they went hungry for a week, they wouldn’t each be able to afford 5 pounds.
There was, however, one little girl called Andrea for whom this wasn’t such a great catastrophe after all. She’d always had an apple AND a banana with her lunch, and now, spotting an opportunity, she marched to the front of the queue and bought the big packet from Uncle Philip.
That afternoon, after a particularly dull Maths lesson, Andrea climbed up on the wall in the playground and shouted to everyone that she was going to be selling 99 of the cards she’d bought. In an instant she was surrounded by all the other children, bright-eyed and eager. But their excitement turned first to bewilderment and then to outright anger. Each card would not now cost the 5 pennies it had before, but 15 pennies each instead! There was no more laughter now, but rather much wailing and gnashing of teeth (they were all still secretly hoping for a visit from the tooth fairy). There were also a few very naughty words shouted at Andrea from a few of the children with a predilection for bullying; but you always get one of two of that kind of child in every playground.
Poor little Andrea couldn’t understand why everyone hated her all of a sudden. “They should be grateful to me”, she thought to herself, “I’m providing a service to them, at least now they have their cards”.
Days went by and Andrea bought and sold lots of cards. The price went up and down, sometimes to 20 pennies, sometimes down as low as 10 pennies and Andrea continued to make a lot of money. But now nobody would talk to her in the playground, which upset her a lot, because all children like to have friends to play with.
About a week later, Andrea was walking down the corridor on her own again when she saw Firechick, one of the coolest girls in the school. Firechick had always been an independent spirit and was never one to follow the crowd. Andrea thought she would ask her why she was being treated so unfairly by everyone. “Firechick,” she asked, “why does everyone hate me? They should admire me for my business acumen, and, well, besides….I’m using all the money I make to pay for my Great Aunt Hilda’s hip-replacement operation. Surely that doesn’t make me a bad person, does it?”
Firechick looked at her in the very cool way she always glared at people and replied,
“I’m very sorry about your Aunt, and I hope she gets better soon, but that's really nothing to do with us. Everyone hates you because you’ve ruined our game. Nobody can afford to buy as many cards as they used to because of the prices you charge.”
Andrea, still not quite understanding, shrugged slowly and walked away, she was late for her English lesson that afternoon.
Nothing much changed as time went on. Eventually Andrea paid for her aunt’s operation, which I‘m pleased to report was a success, and for which she was very grateful. But poor Andrea always ate her lunchtime apple and her banana sitting on a table alone.
I'd like to be able to say that everyone lived happily ever after, but of course fairytales don't always come true - or do they?

Anshe,
Ok you have gone off the deep end with your last post. There is the brink, which you have always seemed to be on the edge of, and now the abyss, which your sanity has obviously plunged into. I do imagine if jewerly store owners or anyone else posted giant signs saying "MMM look at me, I am so rich, you are just jealous", there would be plenty of people glad to whack them like a pinata until all the candy comes out. There is something to be said about being gracious, something you could use many, many lessons in. Gloat away, it is nothing more than a sign of insecurity anyway - BigJohn demonstrated that beautifully a few days ago. You two really should merge your businesses - you can stroke each others broken, warped egos and conquer the world.

Viola,
Your post was amazing - you have such a deep understanding of how people feel, and quite a gift at expressing it in such an eloquent and non-confrontational way. That is one of the best posts I have ever seen in this forum, and having read it, it makes me sad for the SL we have lost.
