From: Latonia Lambert No-one needs to be a mathematician to work out that for doing absolutely nothing at all, they will make a profit of L$2 a sqm.
I really don't know what the answer is but something surely has to be done. If you think some people make too much money too easily, compete with us and sell the land for what you think it fair. Now, please, now don't tell us you have no time for that Oh, right, you don't have the "deep pockets" Mmmm, I remember I started with 9,95$ for lifetime account... From: someone Catherine, keep fighting the good fight. Anyway, if anyone want join "the good fight", my sale signs can be easily found. Just right click, select RATE, then check all negative ratings and enter in the text box "fuXX u rich aZZ". If you want become true hero, make alt account and tell everybody you are newbie and Anshe just bullied you to sell your land for 400 L$ to her. Also don't forget to make up a few stories and file some abuse reports. You know, at Linden support they are great fan of fiction literature and will enjoy very much read your horor stories For advanced heroes I suggest go downtown in your city and smash some windows of jewelry stores. Or do like the jeleous mob did during cultural revolution with my uncle who was business man: take two pencils and drive them both through rich man's eyes until they meet the brain and both blood and brain fluid spill all over the room in big fountain of revolutionary joy.

Now that is a conversation stopper.

Anshe, you were a much better land baroness when you didn't provoke people and just played dumb.

LOL Hiro!
I agree.. though not pointing to Anshe in particular...
There's something absurdly amusing when everyone knows the person is abusing the system through various means and at the same time they try to sell themselves off as the 'good guy/girl'.

Juro, The jury is out with me, honestly. Though I hear story after story from friends about bad dealings with Anshe, I'm not sure it's intentional deception. Call me an idealist and naieve for thinking most grief is done unintentionally, but when I did have a problem with Anshe, and was very angry with her given her reputation, she was nothing but civil with me. I wonder if Anshe just has severe culture differences, because at many times she seems honestly put back by all this.

True... But before anyone jumps to conclusions, my earlier comments were not about Anshe in particular. I don't want anyone thinking I'm calling him/her out apart from the rest of the barons. Although, I'm sure it does get tiring of people pointing fingers and tossing allegations toward you.. even if it's true.

Gotta say, Anshe, in all my life I've never been compared to an unreconstructed Maoist. Kudos to you for a first. Almost felt like a member of the Gang of Four, until I remembered that I'd read this same story in several different accounts of the Cultural Revolution. And actually heard a witness talk about it during a presentation at the University of Chicago a few years ago. Your uncle, huh? Wow....

I think you know my feelings about barons and to become one would mean having to hate myself. Obviously something i wish to avoid. Latonia

Latonia Before I join SL I depend on money from my husband to support my parents in China. I am glad for you to have nice income from your job. But trying use pressure tactic to prevent other people earn money from their job is complete a***** behavior. If I were you, I couldn't feel anything but shame of myself. During 7 months I can't remember having seen one single complaint from an actual customer. I am providing fair and honest service, added competition to market and loyal customer who come back to me again and again proove the value of my work. But people like you try destroy this, try attack reputation, try make people believe they do something bad by using my service. This is why I have nothing left but utmost contempt for little minds like you. You are one of those who abuse forums and/or rating system in a low attempt to destroy other people's opportunities. From: Anshe Chung [edited to remove quote of personal attack] I'm stating the facts, Anshe. The incident you described is a famous one that happened during the Cultural Revolution, and has been written about many times. There are witnesses among the crowd who have since spoken out. It's an amazing coincidence that the victim of the crowd happened to be your uncle. That was my original point. edited because I changed my mind about asking that this thread be shut down. I thought this was a land discussion? How did it turn into a lets beat up Anshe day? Shame on all of you ... OH and direct reply to Catherine Cotton WHO DID grief me to death and DID triple neg rate my signs and DID spread the false rumor that I am not a real person but Anshe Chung's secret alter ego...(keeping in mind that childlike school yard banter appears to be all you understand)... *blows a resounding raspberry in your direction*

From: Mae Best How did it turn into a lets beat up Anshe day? Shame on all of you ... Well how very selective of you. Did you actually read what Anshe has replied (over and over and over again)? Have you seen the accusations she has leveled at the community? You'd like for her to be able to come in and beat everyone with sticks and for us to shut the hell up and take it, right? When Anshe realises that people who disapprove of her tactics and behaviour are not just jealous of her bottomless pockets, and stops posting to accuse us of that in response to every point that is raised, then I guess we'll stop pointing out the obvious. When Anshe realises that customers of ANYONE (crack dealers, assassins etc) are OBVIOUSLY approving of their tactics and 'services' by the mere fact they are a customer in the first place, but that they are not necessarily indicative of the views of general population, and stops posting that as 'proof', then I guess we'll stop pointing out the obvious. Trust me, if I wanted to become a land baron, I have enough cash to outbid her on anything she goes for, thanks. I choose not to because I disapprove of the behaviour and have no wish to be a land baron. Is that really a difficult concept to understand? Apparently so.

With all the "Land Baron" talk, I was looking around and found confirmation of what I suspected was going on within the system. Cory states on an article in Gamasutra:From: someone Land in Second Life is a scarce resource and is released to residents via auction. Some residents quickly determined that they could purchase land, subdivide it, and resell it in world for a profit. Land barons have proven to be unpopular with the other residents and discussion threads about the problem have shown up regularly in game forums.
The problem is both one of perception and of fact. The reality is that the speculators are so efficient and motivated to win auctions that other residents have been largely squeezed out of the auction system. For example, over a recent 30-day period, only 5% of those residents who purchased land had purchased it from the auction system. The other 95% buy land from the land speculators.
(emphasis mine)So I'd guess they're aware of the problem, just haven't worked out a means to improve things yet. Here's hoping!

This also confirms my suspicion that this is an oligopoly, a few sellers to a lot of buyers. One way to combat this to make markets more efficient is to open up the auction/land transactions system - make it all transparent, defeat the policy of market manipulation.

maxx,
it would be an ogilopoly if land barons really controlled the resource. they do not. the only party that has claim to this is LL.
as latonia and kris point out, they could easily enter the land speculation game. they choose not to. i'm sure hundred of players could, but are not interested in making thier leisure time about land speculation.
you are trying very hard to make a case that there is something underhanded or undemocratic going on when in fact it is merely an openmaerket dominated by the few gamblers, myself included, who think buying and selling land is fun. this is not a problem with the system, this is a problem with the SL public not putting thier money where thier mouth is and the creation of a false morality by this lethargic mass.
i do not get upset that most players for not being interested in this aspect of SL and resultingly creating a condition by there own reclusion where a few dozen players are running the auctions because i recognize it is thier choice but if you want to blame someone, blame this group, to which you belong.
latonia, kris,
if you do decide to prove your worth, i highly recommend you don't try to show off your big kahunas by trying to outbid everyone on the auction. bad strategy. you will be left holding a very big bag. the real money is made when you find the baby where no one bids against you.
