Works for me on my new laptop (this is good sense it is for my scripting and web page work) Didn't notice to many problems that I haven't seen before like the whole lighting differences between the avatars skin and prim attachments (really noticeable on furies)
A side question my laptop is my first multi core system even with turning on the multi thread option in debug menu didn't increase my processor usage, it still floated at about 60% with web, vent, mp3, and other stuff running. I was wondering if that option is supposed to do something yet or if it is one of the to be worked on things. It would be nice to have the ability to modify that to use more speed of my computer for High lag, little else going on the computer usage.
Keep up the good work. it was nice today to work on my laptop.

I'm not sure what the multi-threading option would do, to be entirely honest. The program, by default, runs in multiple threads to the best of my knowledge. Threading is something any processor, even a single-core one, is capable of doing. It's simply running multiple series of instructions in parallel in one program.
To be honest, I'm not even sure if your machine would register much of a CPU usage difference by assigning different parts to either core.

I haven't found anything that helps run it. That VistaSL doesn't work, Olympia drivers have just messed up my machine a tad. Not having a good time of it. I am gutted. Only bought the machine for SL expansion of what I do. Cries and dies... looks nice on the desk though.

Vista sighs
03-21-2007 21:33
Yeah. I downloaded all the newest patches for the drivers (Feb 21, 2007) and then tried the Vista download listed above. Nothing. LOL This is so frustrating bc I have property and a job on sl and can't get to either. If anyone knows of another patch let me know. cute.wind@hotmail.com I have to get back online........sheesh

This stuff is really annoying. I just got this new laptop to whoop SL's laggy butt into submission, only to find out that VISTA and ATI are SL's mortal enemy at the moment. I mean hell, I can play Oblivion at max settings with all bells and whistles but heaven forbid those of us with good things be able to play SL. I'm seriously not downgrading to XP just to play SL, that's too much hassle. The work on these user created patches is good but none of them work for me. The only solution I see so far is LL is going to NEED to catch up.

Big THX to Lockhart Cordoso
03-23-2007 05:40
Hi Lockhart - many thanks for your work, which I (and I think a lot of other users) appreciate very much. Without your help, I wouldn't be able to access SL now. Your client works very well for me on my Dell 1150 Laptop with Vista Home Basic.

ITS ALIVE I TELL YOU. So on this blog : http://direct2dell.com/ : the guy was saying that Dell had new Radeon / Catalyst drivers with OpenGL support. Downloaded the blighter ran it ... Ran VistaSL. and praise be the lords. It worked. Now running full screen SL in all it's glory on Vista with x1300pro ATI Radeon Catalyst. So if you are looking for Open GL support on ATI and are running a Dell have a look at there drivers and support page. and relax. Thanks to the cleverclogs that wrote VistaSL btw. Bigup. Come on over and visit my venue now in SL .... ermmm it is a big warehouse in the east of primrose. dok

http://www.epeon.net/SecondLife.zipCompiled my latest First Look viewer for the 1.13.4.59558 first look. Uninstall any First Look instances you have at the moment, install the 1.13.4.59558 version, and copy that .exe into your SecondLifeFIRSTLOOK directory and point your shortcuts to SecondLife.exe (as opposed to SecondLifeFirstLook.exe). Hope it works for everyone as well as it works for me. By the end of the month, ATI is releasing their Catalyst 7.3 drivers, which fixes the entire problem. Will no longer need VistaSL.

ATI's open GL support is terrible right now, your other game is likely running on Direct 3d. If none of the fixes in this thread are helping for you, hold tight, cause ATI is releasing new versions of its drivers, which should remedy the situation.

Nicole speaks the truth! It's absolutely nothing to do with LL's code, plain and simple. Within the next week ATI will release their latest 7.3 drivers and you will be solid.

If it is has "absolutely nothing to do with LL's code", then how come somebody else can make a version of the Second Life viewer that works? It is Linden Lab's JOB to make Second Life work, plain and simple. Nobody cares about the technical details of why that job might be hard, it's completely irrelevant. I cannot believe that any major software company would look at its customers with a straight face and say "Our product does NOT currently support Windows Vista." Are they nuts?! -o

Well, like I posted on a new thread, the 7.3b Catalyst drivers are out on Guru3D, and they do not help run SL at all, and I'll say again, if it's any sign of what's to come we are still screwed. I know that LL is doing everything in their power to make this "not their fault". And yes I know that OpenGL on ATI is a little messy right now, but even still LL needs to accept the fact that there is a new major OS out and just about everything works on VISTA except SL and anything that uses GameGuard. So yeah, SL is kinda singled out.

The reason that I can make a viewer that works is because my only concern is that it works on Vista, even if that means loss of some functionality. LL can't break features in the codebase just so that it works on Vista. LL is using code that "should" work and is the best code for the job. VistaSL has to replace that with inefficient code that doesn't do the best job.

-o I agree. The weight of responsability is that the software provider makes it work with the most current Operating Systems. If I was running a website that didn't work for Mac's. I wouldn't expect the browser to go out and buy a PC. BUT... You are my hero for making Vista work. And LL should be paying you.

I will have to agree with Dok that SL, too, needs to drive themselves to the new OS, SL and GameGuard are lagging behind every other piece of softwareon the market. I mean hell, if I can get games from the mid 90's to work on Vista without patching, I dont see why there should be so many problems.

P.S. I just tried the unofficial viewer with the latest FirstLook build, and alas, it's finally working, smoothly might I add, someone hire this man as the senior programmer, cause LL just got burned hard, by a USER.

From: Lockhart Cordoso For those non-coders, I put the fixed version in a zip archive. Save zip somplace. Just extract the zip to your desktop and it should create a folder called SecondLifeVista. Inside of that, just double-click on the SecondLife application. If it doesn't work, post and let's see if we can figure this out. See this post for link: /111/98/163395/2.html#post1398794/111/98/163395/2.html#post1398794I tried your viewer but it says that xul.dll is not found

So yeah, SL is kinda singled out. That's funny. I loaded them up and SL fired right up for me. (1.14.0) Vista's video DID go into basic mode instead of the enhanced mode (Vista Home Premium), but I'll take that trade off for SL to work. In fact, I believe the system performs better in basic video mode vs. enhanced. Your mileage may vary. And, I wouldn't load beta versions of any driver unless you know what you're doing.

After Mike's success, I figured I would try the beta drivers. They did work. Official 1.14.0.0 and the 7.3 beta drivers loaded up fine. I am building 1.14.0.0 with the workaround in place, in case the driver doesn't work for you or you don't want to switch to a beta driver. VistaSL 1.14.0.0: http://www.noxforum.net/files/VistaSL Setup.exe

They work. SL runs gorgeously on the 7.3 catalyst drivers. Thank you very much to those of you who got us through the long, annoying time this upgrade took to arrive.
