Hi , I got a new Dell desktop with Vista Operating system installed along with a Radeon x1300 256MB video card , all factory installed. I went to the ATi website and downloaded the new Open GL drivers for the sysem. before installing the drivers, will SL work on this system ?

As it is now, no, in future most likly.

Vista + SL + Ati does not go well since they need to fix their opengl driver still, Ati is utter slow as usual, there's a shock

Personally, 7.3 worked right for me, 7.4 crashes. Maybe you should try 7.3?

DELL Laptop

Anyone who has a Dell manufactured Laptop, running Vista 32bit and has an ATI Mobility of the following types:

ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Series,Mobility Radeon 9800,Mobility Radeon 9700,Mobility Radeon X600,MobilityRadeon X300,Radeon Mobility X1400,Radeon Mobility X1800,Radeon Mobility X1700,Radeon Mobility X1300

...should definitely check this (long) url:

http://search.euro.dell.com/results.aspx?c=nl&l=nl&s=gen&cat=sup&cs=&k=ati+Mobility&qmp=12&p=1&subcat=dyd/1004&rf=all&evl=&nk=f&sort=K&snpsd=A&nf=19019%7e7%7e161365&dt=&navla=19019%7e7%7e161365&fm=&ss=&ira=False&cp1=-1&cp2=-1&si=&spf=&ssysid=&ssysn=&stag=&~srd=False&~ck=anav

I installed the VistaSL version mentioned earlier in a post by Lockhart Cordoso (somewhere on page 16) and downloaded the new drivers (R147065) @ dell.

It solved my prob with the crashing SL. Hope you find what you're looking for. Sorry, it's the dutch version but I think it will be clear what driver you need. ;-)

Nope, 7.2 did not work, 7.3 did not work and 7.4 does not work too.
So far SL never worked on Vista for me.
Vista SL does not work also.

Tuesday i will have a Nvidia and problem will (hopefully) be solved...

ATI driver mod tool
04-22-2007 20:19
OK, I haven't tested this much but so far so good. This crew called DriverHeaven developed a tool that mods the ATI driver installer so you can install the latest version for desktops on you mobility Radeon machines. I found out about the tool through the Dell support forums.

Here is the instructions and download for the Vista version of the tool: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/

I followed their instructions exactly and installed the (modded) Catalyst 7.4 control center. The latest SL client version now runs fine on my Dell laptop with Radeon x1400.

I have been using my older XP system, waiting before trying to install SL on my Vista system. I have dual nvidia 8800's with the 1-17-07 Alienware drivers and have refrained from installing the latest Nvidia drivers due to advice from Alienware.

When load SL I can get to the login screen but then get "Disply driver has terminated and recovered" message, then the login screen will come back for about 20 seconds then crashes with a second life.exe runtime error.

Whats happening here? Alienware told me the driver they have is a tweaked driver and they still do not recommend the recent one from Nvidia and to wait till they have it on their website. I tend to think I should wait for Alienware--on the driver, but the issue might be something else...Anyone know?

About my above post, I solved the issue by asking Alienware again if i should Now install the new drivers and they said yes.

Apparently running SL for the first time on this Vista computer corrupted the nvida---nvlddmkm file. This broke other games as well and uninstalling and reinstalling the new April 17 Nvida drivers solved the problem....at least getting to login screen with no issue.

I know this thread was concerning ATI drivers, but i saw no where else to post this.

Didn't work for me either! (At least with today's new release.) I've been running a "VistaSL" found on the forums until today. With this required new release I can't get anything to work. EEK! Anyone have a solution for me? Hellllllllllllllp!

Help us

Lockhart Cordoso we need you. Your patch is the only way I've been able to use SL on my vista cursed laptop. Now there's an update and I'm without SL again. I think the Lindens should pay you big bucks for doing their job for them. Seems like
ATI has abandoned us (I'll never buy another one of their cards), and the only thing the Lindens do right consistently is collect my money. Flawless...

So confused :(
04-25-2007 17:20
I had to purchase a new laptop with windows vista, i have a AMD Turion64x2 graphic card (i think thats it) and its a Gateway computer. I luckily found Lockhart's ( Much thanks for that btw! ) Vista program which worked fine, but with the upgrade.. well now not so much.

I know the update is wicked fubared. But wondering what I can do on my end to get SecondLife up and running again, like everyone else on Vista

Any help would be appreciated from this computer dumbfounded pixel.
