Hey, I forget who made the VistaSL client but here's something interesting:
The longer it runs, the slower it gets in terms of framerate. I'm honestly not sure what could cause this (I'd say memory leak, but maybe not?)

Yeah it could be memory leak...I've noticed SL gets upwards near 350mb of memory usage after about 10 minutes...but I haven't monitored the memory that close. Could be a memory leak though in the render loop.

That's common for the viewer due to SL's streaming nature. I've actually seen it hit 700mb before without any performance hit, it just has to store a lot of stuff in a temporary way.

Yeah definitely scream like hell at ATI. It's not that hard to implement a specification that's as organized as OpenGL. I'll install those drivers tomorrow and try my build again, and see what gives. I really wish Lockhart would respond to this thread with his source and/or his environment setup spec. From what I've read, the problem is, besides the whole switch in Vista to new drivers, is that ATI is taking advantage of Vista to rewrite their OpenGL drivers from scratch, something they've been thinking about doing for a while. Their drivers have always been not up to par with the competition where OpenGL was concerned, so they're fixing that now. It'll take time, but this should be good for ATI by the end of the year. |

Here's the First Look viewer recompiled: http://www.epeon.net/SecondLife.zip
Uninstall any copies of SL you may have installed at the moment. Download the latest First Look viewer (58185) if you haven't already and install that. Then, unzip that zip file and copy the SecondLife.exe file to your First Look installation folder. Change the shortcut on your desktop that was installed by the SL installer to point to SecondLife.exe rather than SecondLifeFirstLook.exe and let me know how it works for you all. Works for me after some necessary code changes. I'm running Vista x64. Note: if the game crashes at precaching, go to Start -> Computer, type in %APPDATA% as the address and go into the SecondLife folder and delete the folder named "cache" and then try again. |

Cheers One, you need the QuickTime player installed, else it's not going to work ![]() Two, my newly compiled version does have QuickTime support built in...give it a shot per the directions I layed out. |

I just noticed the map is a little unstable. Need to pinpoint that as well. I'll keep everyone informed. This would all be fixed if ATI just gets their act together.

I just uploaded a new version http://www.epeon.net/SecondLife.zip
This version was built using Visual Studio 2003 rather than Visual Studio 2005. It doesn't load the splash screen at the login screen, but the Map is stable. Honestly, that's the only difference...the IDE (and thus which MS C runtime it's using...7.1 rather than 8.0). I hope Linden Labs can deliver source which targets these different runtimes appropriately and consistently. |

I updated my drivers to 7.2 and now every time I try to run SL, I get "Display driver R300 stopped responding and has successfully recovered" and SL crashes. Thats even with your updated version.

I have an AGP x800XL with 256 megs RAM. Everything was working perfectly for me under the 7.1 drivers, and then I upgraded to 7.2 and things have been less stable. In fact, I've gotten my first two blue-screens under Vista today, trying to run SL after this driver update.
I wonder if its because you're in 64 bit Vista and I'm in 32 bit Vista. Maybe theres an issue with the 32 bit Vista 7.2 drivers. |

This last time I was able to stay connected for 10 minutes, and then the program crashed. Again, another blue-screen.

well vista won't be stable enough before a good 6-12 months, the time for the first buyers to finish the "beta" testing

Nvidia isn't much better, they dropped many features in their Vista drivers. This is true. In fact, believe it or not, ATI is striving to make their Vista drivers very featureful. It's a brand new driver model and they've pretty much nailed it...it's simply their OpenGL problems they have to fix up. I think their DirectX 9/10 problems are non-existent as they followed the windows driver model precisely. There's not a whole lot of demand for OpenGL in general, which is why it's on the back burner for them. It'll mature soon enough. And Vista has been extremely stable for me. I suppose the Vista x86 ATI drivers have problems...but my x64 7.2 drivers are an improvement from 7.1. If it weren't for two people claiming problems in the 32-bit driver, I'd of asked you to try to uninstall 7.1 fully and go back to the Vista default drivers, and then reinstall 7.2. I simply did an upgrade myself and it was smooth. |

Be wary of installing older drivers from new ones. Make sure you have a restore point saved. Silly little things like your video card suddenly not working anymore or your mouse and keyboard cease functioning can be easily fixed if the driver corrupts your registry.
