while Prokofy certainly has been successfull in business

Define successful. Prok owns some sims. As far as being successful, who knows really.

From: ReallyRick Metropolitan
Prok contiunes to push the envelope.

Push what envelope? Push buttons more like. Making it on top 10 list because you're annoying doesn't speak much for the list does it?

From: ReallyRick Metropolitan
No one should get all upset and take anything personal. :D

I think you missed most of the gist of everyone's posts. We're ridiculing the list.

A feltching hat? sorry had the 'sucking up' part on the brain and misread that.

Looked this up in Wikipedia. Need to rewind time.

Oh well then hehe sorry I misunderstood. It WAS 163 posts to try and catch up on. :D

In a side note, you know that in all the time I was in SL, I never REALLY got to meet you Ingrid. We would see each other in passing at certain events, like at Bella Feu once, but never held a conversation I think. I also heard of the famous Ingrid and your wonderful witty sense of humor. :D

I have been in the hospital the past 8 days so I am coming at this whole conversation late in the game. :D From what I skimmed realky quickly here are my thoughts:

Maybe people forgot what the first paragraph of Hamlet's story said..."influence and reputation goes to those with the will to build—objects and scripts, yes, and successful businesses, too, but just as important, unique personas who engage and enthrall." I don't think however this automatically translates into the "popular kids."

Based on Hamlet's statement, while Prokofy certainly has been successfull in business, I think it is fair to say he falls more into the "engage and enthrall" category. Like it or not, Prokofy IS a engrained in the history of SL and contiunes to push the envelope.

I really have to disagree with Cory Doctorow making the list because what, he has been in world 2 times maybe and both were to promote a book?

Certainly Anshe is going to be #1 and she should be. She is the definition of power player in our world.

What about Torley? Even though she is now a Linden, she wasn't most of her SL life. More than anyone else she had the charisma and passion to see to it that Second Life was a positive place for any who came into contact with her. She sees these world full of possibilites and has documented it amazingly in her blog.

This isnt a popularity contest. Hamlet is simply writing a story on those residents he feels shapes the direction and furture of SL. No one should get all upset and take anything personal. :D

Sorry to hear you have been in the hospital.

Torley - yes, I think you have definitely nailed one!

I would put Torley on the list.

(*Hamlet reads this thread, starts scribbling furiously, bumps someone off the list to make room for Torley* haha just kidding)

Not everyone, Ingrid. Not me. And even if most people were, that would be no reason why everyone should change their tune and start ridiculing it, would it.

Stay tuned for my "Where Are They Now?" expose in which I reveal my mental breakdown, laxative abuse, and give a tour of my van down by the riverside. ;)

What the heck? This was my story.

Oh well. Pffty. :p

Oh yeah, I forgot to include the sad part of Chip's story where his need for cash to support his laxative habit forced him into the shady underworld of identity theft, where he managed to steal Lash Xevious's story and Visa check card. Tragic * shakes head *

Wasn't that about the time you were spying on your neighbours doing what they do in Federal?

Sure, these folks may have made a contribution to SL at some point but was it lasting?
Jenna Fairplay - yep, heard the name. Heard of Edge, never been there myself, but I remember pissing them off once when Klub Kink got popular. Is Edge still around? Does she still own and run it in this "innovative" fashion?

Edge is still around, and it seems to be consistently in the popular places.

Only because Prok made it. You'd be howling if Prok didn't, and going off about another silly list, which it is.

To prove the point - I can sneak into a Teazers newbie building class with ease - I've done it several times with Nolan Nash, Ferran Brodsky and a few others. Try it - its fun and interesting and I got 500L$ that says you won't be recognized by the instructor or the class :)

I'll take that bet......next time I run a class that is :P

No I wouldn't be howling, what a silly notion.

In fact, I would say that you are the one howling because he is on it.

what?

To clarify: Even if most people were ridiculing the list, that would be no reason why anyone not clearly ridiculing it should change their tune and start ridiculing it.

The interesting point is that most people I meet hardly know some of these people ;-)
It of course always depends on your perception, maybe how long you are in here etc.
And maybe it is even different nowadays that the population grows and grows. It might not be that easy anymore to get influential.

(and we're only in year 3 of SL anyway so who define that list again in 50 years ;-)

(besides such a list being very subjetive anyway but it creates nice discussions :) )

Don't you rememeber your campaign against FIC? Except Prok IS FIC now so you'll conveniently forget, I'm sure. As will Prok. Can't beat this kind of entertainment.

I think it's hilarious.

I think my reaction to the list went beyond riducle. I am not riducling this list, I am simply despising it.

Who is or who is not on the list is not a matter of importance. You could have named ten blind giraffes for all I care. The list would still be repulsive to me. It reduces SL to a platitiude, and gives three lame categories to describe each persons impact on SL. It offends me to think that ther eis some quantifiable measure of importance. Hell we might as well go back to measuing cranium size as an indicator of intelligence.

The list is silly and stupid, and yes, in its own way (and it hurts me to say this-really) it makes everyone else look foolish. It is not that these people stand out from the collective and the collective is bringing them down (to use the objectivist parlance of Ayn Rand, so beleoved on these boards). It is that only ten are selected and and the criteria for ranking them is silly. And then Cory Doctorow? What has he done for SL? Yes I have seen the books on teh shelves, I know he is an RL author, but why does that define and impact SL? Chrsit if you are going to select a top ten list of influential people in SL, they should all be real residents whit a presence of accomplishment in SL.

Thus the list was really "ten people i like" packaged and presented to other people, including prospective residents as some sort of study, survey result supported by something other than the gas from the author's ass. Now I hang out here in the forum, where we all do quite a bit of ass gassing-hell I have awhole thread of my own. But its context. At least here we assume each other is pretty well full of it, and we say so with alarming frequency. But this, this, like feeding tuna to a parrot fish, is an abomination!

So its not some sudden elevation of prokofy to the FIC and the real FIC running scared. This peice is just arbitrary and artificial pontification put out as some measure of kewlness.
