To quote from the article, "What follows is an opinionated and sure-to-be disputed compilation of the most influential players (called “Residents”) in a world now 180,000 strong."

Bahahahaha.

Cory Doctorow is number 6?

Cory Doctorow is easily one of the least relevant names in SL, unless he's using an alt and shaping the landscape in ways that aren't well-known. Hell, Prok deserves #6 more than Cory.

Ooooh!

Ordinal got a mention!

Yaaay!!!

(insofar as it's about 'Power Elite' - anyone who knows Ordinal is going to chuckle at that)

Does it count as naming names if I say that I find it amusing that Prokofy made the top ten. I guess Prok can get his official FIC badge now and joint in the chant with the rest of us.

I normally hate "Top 10" lists because they reek of popularity contests, and furthermore you can't possibly make one without leaving out someone important.

That said, I feel a couple of the names dropped had an influence on SL's formative culture but not so much a permanent change of course. If you're only famous or notorious, it's a fleeting thing that will inevitably be forgotten as the new generation of SLers show up. In this world, you either keep innovating or you're "yesterday".

Cory's influence was intellectual more than anything, and I would agree he should be "also mentioned" rather than top 10. The same could be said for Prokofy, though every culture needs its rabble rouser jousting at imaginary barricades. Comparing him to Chomsky was pretty appropriate in the scheme of things :)

So what about the Midnights anyway? Torrid, Chip and Cristiano may not be related but I think each of them has changed SL in huge ways but they only get special mention? Chip, especially, as I understand it created the first commercial skins, right? How huge is that?

Today there are new powerbrokers aborning. I'll name Javier Puff as one, simply because (a) his SL video contest winner may be the best promotion of SL yet; (b) the XCite! attachments are becoming the must-have toys of the new SLers, for better or worse. Javier's too nouveau to be on that list, but take note. He's a future candidate.

Who are the rest of you expecting to see in the top 5?

Pol, personally I would make it pocket size and have it laminated. That way it's easily accessible and ready for fast viewing.

I hadn't considered that. A more convenient, pocket-sized format would make all the difference. Torrid, you are my personal "Power Elite."

I bought a Black & Decker bomb/bathtub combination a while back, but I found it wasn't nearly as useful as this list.

Thumbs up Hamlet!

Anshe will be there, of course; Plastic Duck? Grimmy Moonflower?

I agree the Midnights should have been included as well, but my list would have contained a fourth qualifier: innovation.

Siggy? Munchflower?

I'm clueless.

Regards,

I'm glad to hear you went for a brand name bombathtub.

Cory did make a second visit at one point. He's also a really cool personality, and made a pretty awesome showing at that event, given the weird time it was planned.

That said, I have to agree. Tossing Cory's name in there feels like a shameless plug to BoingBoing and Cory's novelist career. While I highly respect Mr. Doctorow, I think he'd agree that his impact on the world has not been nearly as great as many, many others.

It makes me wonder if he'll make a statement on it. Hm. I'll send him the link! :D

Grimmy for sure - the first SecondLife Melodramatic villain! - Me - never, I wince when my name comes up on any of those list thingies.

Xylor Baysklef won't but should. Theres something to be said for folks that can automatically create perfect geometric shapes that fill an entire sim.

Green Fate - revolutionised the prim genital biz.

IronChef, Bozo, and Jack Digeridoo - an entire sim of games when such were not seen.

Ama Omega - Casinos - Say no more.

Chip Midnight - Photoskins.

Merwin Marker - I still remember his post first suggesting a SecondLife shopping website and the people that tried to shoot his idea down for being worthless.

The GOM team - seriously - they utterly changed the face of SecondLife for good or illl - without them there probably wouldn't BE folks making USD in SecondLife.

The list goes on and an on and on and on - but I don't expect to see those names.
