I have my own top ten list.

And I'm not telling anyone who is on the list, so....let the clamoring and sucking up commence!

On the other hand, when you pit the average hobbyist blogger against a professional journalist.

LOLOCAUST.

Work in the media as long as I have and you start to giggle over the term professional journalist.

Professionals check sources - NWN was a paid for feel good rag, nothing more an nothing less. It was a half decent read but I certainly wouldn't ever have taken it as news source.

At best - a series of subjective articles.

Hrmmm. This is a tough call. On one hand, the Internet age means anybody who can create an account on Blogger.com can have the same voice as a New York Times journalist. We have certainly seen examples where the blog-o-sphere has trumped the "mainstream media" in terms of accuracy and even general interest.

On the other hand, when you pit the average hobbyist blogger against a professional journalist who is paid and published by Salon, Wired, Kotaku, The Los Angeles Times, Lingua Franca, Game Developer, Gamespot, Gameslice, and many others ... well frankly that DOES seem more relevant! No offense to other bloggers (including ME and my own amateaur contributions to SLOG)

If the work of other bloggers resonates enough with readers where a company like Federated Media wants to pay them to do their THANG, then I think it would be unfair (and a bit inaccurate) to say that blogger is no more relevant than anybody else. They must be doing something right!

That said, nobody should take Hamlet's TOP TEN as some official stamp, even Hamlet admits that. I saw this article as simply an interesting and entertaining read.

As I was riding into work this morning I was listening to a show about video press releases. It seems TV stations in Major Markets, like new york and los angeles and miami, among many, have begin the practice of taking Video Press Releases put out by companies, and are putting them directly inot the news. Sometimes the voice over the VPR scritp and sometimes they even just call teh publicist a Fox News Reporter, or a CBS reporter. The LA station at least redid the VPR graphics to look like thier own.

Here is one story: http://www.statenews.com/article.phtml?pk=35716

from the center for media and democracy report, I quote this:

"Over a ten-month period, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) documented television newsrooms' use of 36 video news releases (VNRs)—a small sample of the thousands produced each year. CMD identified 77 television stations, from those in the largest to the smallest markets, that aired these VNRs or related satellite media tours (SMTs) in 98 separate instances, without disclosure to viewers. Collectively, these 77 stations reach more than half of the U.S. population. The VNRs and SMTs whose broadcast CMD documented were produced by three broadcast PR firms for 49 different clients, including General Motors, Intel, Pfizer and Capital One. In each case, these 77 television stations actively disguised the sponsored content to make it appear to be their own reporting. In almost all cases, stations failed to balance the clients' messages with independently-gathered footage or basic journalistic research. More than one-third of the time, stations aired the pre-packaged VNR in its entirety"

the link: http://www.prwatch.org/fakenews/execsummary

And well for certified professional journalism and its potential to mislead, I thnk only of Stephen Glass.

I dunno if I would say professional media has much more wieght than bloggers. LOL at leaast I know to suspect what bloggers say, and double check.

Rather than interrupt the conversation already going on, I'll take nominations for a Resident- created Top 10 Power Elite in my own conference:

The *real* members of SL's Top 10 Power elite are...

Click the link, read the guidelines, nominate away! As I say there, if there's sufficient interest in the nomination process (say 250+ nominators), I'll pitch my Kotaku editors to run this as a follow-up on their site.

Whos Hamlet? And why should we care what he thinks? Didn't he used to work for LL? Didn't they promote his book just before he quit?

Who will be named Prom Queen?

Seriously - such a WOFTAM (waste of fucking time and money)

Heres my 'Waholesque' prediction:

I would say every resident in some shape or form at some point through their Second Lives will do something that do something that will have lasting impact.

Do we really need any MORE popularity lists? Why not do a real story - fuck knows theres enough going on out there... this is fodder and filler.

It's just Hamlet's way of making himself relevant again by poking at the sensitivities of the Second Life community. He used to just report the news, now he's trying to create it for his own self-promotion ends. I find it all quite laughable, but he's got his wish - we're all here talking about it.

Interestingly only select people can comment over at the original article's home - I guess something else that ensures the exposure the article gets is greater than it would otherwise be as people have to take it away and discuss it elsewhere. :)

Yah I'm still waiting for someone to write an article on Pavel Curtis (now a resident of Second Life)

I'd love to hear what the Grandfather of this all (Second Life being an extension of MOO - as Everquest and DDO et al are to MUDs) thinks about Second Life and its relationship to other virtual spaces.

But eh - no takers yet, he sat down with LL for a chat at one point but I guess I'll have to settle for 'ya ya A Team' and a 12 part series on Cory D. blowing his nose.

Not so much a 'Hunter S Thompson' of SL - more a Joan Rivers.

I see negative reprocussions coming from a once Linden nameholder issuing a an elitist list. I see it as very different than a Fortune 500 list, or a list of those whose impact on our society has changed the world, shifted it's direction, or affected our method of usership.

When Anshe Chung begame very successful in her endeavors using incredibly smart business savvy- and the Linden Lab openly acknowledged her as an entity unto her own, she became the most despised figure in the History of Sl, despite having committed no deliberate acts against any singular entity. Because of being openly lauded by Linden Lab, she became openly, and widely criticsized for her success, enduring community alienation, mocking, dodging vicious accusations and character attacks in mass. I think if the Linde Lab had not so blatantly offered her special attention and backed her visibility, the nature of the community would have not been nearly as hostile. I see this in very same much the same light as child-like jealousy- when in gradeschool, all the kids hated the golden student who stood at the Teachers right side. Our community still suffers this mentality to a great degree and a lot of good people are ostcsized - even descriminated against - for being spotlighted by employees of Linden Lab. It's very much a double edged sword, being in their graces.

An elite list is not empowering to the community, in fact, instead it's damaging to all involved. Hamelt, you've already been witness to various attacks by those angry they or someone they loved were not included, and these people you have spotlighted recieve community backlash, deemed self important "FIC" members with Linden Lab in their pockets. This in turn pits the community at large against a few people here who simply enjoy what they're doing and have found their niche- along with success.

I much more agree with involving the community in such a list should there be one, instead of trying to be the definitive. In doing this you are inviting a wider spectrum, if not altogether a more accurate assessment of WHO has impacted the community, not who has impacted you.

I would expect something like this from a SL tabloid site rather than a previously officially sanctioned Linden Lab.

I support anything that invites community interaction and participation, allowing their voices to be heard regardless... Taking it upon yourself to exalt a localized crowd in your social circle above the rest of the community only promotes a combative, contentious atmosphere.
