From: Cocoanut Koala Damn straight, Enabran. Now if people would just stop being so stingy with your knowledge and give me the damn gas! What, do you want us to give you a seminar? You're admitting you don't have the gas. When I'm not qualified to hold strong opinions on something as a result of my ignorance or inexperience, I don't. I advise you take a similar approach if you want to be taken seriously. Unless those academic credentials of yours include a few credit hours in advanced OpenGL development.

From: Cocoanut Koala Eggzackly! Make sure the Second Life is going to keep working before you insert any new cool features into it that breaks it. (Not Lindex, in this case, but whatever did break it.) coco The Lindex was not a "cool new feature" like video. It was put in to help stabilize an economy that is of importance to many people in SL and that was reliant on the whims of third party sites alone. The Linden dollar value sunk like a stone. By providing a simple, secure means for all residents to be able to buy and sell currency without haivng to rely on unknown third party sites and Paypal, they made it much more easily accessible to everyone. The result has been a very steady increase in the value of the L$, which is important to all those who rely on it to pay for their tier, and often, even their groceries and rent. It was very important development work, much more important than any of the features that ended up in 1.7. Also, the Lindex was launched well before 1.7 - I don't even know how you correlate the two of them. Is it because development still is ongoing on it? PS - the accelerated pace of the launch of the Lindex occured in part because of GOM's closure.

From: Dnate Mars Do you want them to fire Peter? Is that what you are asking them to do? Even if they pulled all of the member that were working on all the other projects, it would not help 1.7 at this point. LL did not expect 1.7 to explode the way it has. It sounds to me that there are some nasty bugs with textures that were not corrected, or found, in the testing that was done. All of the other projects we started while 1.7 was under devolopment. There is nothing that can be done now that LL has not been doing already. No. Whoever Peter is, he can keep working on what he is working on. I have always been against it when people say, "Oh, don't work on this, work on that," when "this" is probably some little extra that took somebody only five minutes to do anyway (in TSO). I am saying: a. If putting new things into the game is gonna break the game, and make people leave in droves, then stop putting them in! Let Peter or whoever work on them all you want, but make sure that when you get them into the game, it's not going to break it! b. We can't use a broken game no matter how many neat things it has that we can't use! c. If the solution to all this is either (1) get a new computer or (2) get used to it, you were spoiled before anyway, then I don't like it. And I'm not the only one who's not going to like it. coco

From: Jonquille Noir Let me try a different analogy and see if it helps. Your husband is mowing the lawn. It's a job that really, really needed doing. You're inside with the children. All of a sudden, the kids are hungry! ...But your husband is mowing the lawn, and it really needs mowing! Oh my god, what are you going to do?! How are you supposed to feed the kids when the lawn is still such a mess! Should you wait until the lawn is all manicured and perfect to feed the kids? No, you shouldn't. They're two seperate jobs, and each can be done by different people without affecting the other. He can mow the lawn. You can feed the kids. No sense in not feeding the kids just because the lawn isn't done. Maybe you should hire more fathers and less children. Ever think about that? Ha! I didn't think so lol

"Being ignorant of its most basic workings is scary indeed, doubly so for a supposed degree holder." Lookie. I am not ignorant of its most basic workings that I USE. I am ignorant of the meaning of "client" WHICH IS WHY I ASKED what client means. GET IT??? I don't know the inner workings of my car, either, and if I should need to know some term in order to understand the answer the mechanic is giving me, I WILL ASK ABOUT IT TO. Meanwhile, I can continue driving everywhere I want, and have all the opinions I want on car design, car safety, traffic issues, gas mileage, ALL KINDS OF THINGS, and even VOTE on them, without having to know the name of that thingamajig under the hood. And if I DO want to know the name of it, and I ask the mechanic, I expect to be treated with decency and not all this "grunting" and have all the mechanics standing around making fun of me for asking, and telling me I ought to just GIVE UP MY DAMN CAR if I have so LITTLE knowledge of it. And if they can't have a decent conversation with me about it, they I will probably take their invoice and tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine. coco

Does that mean I also can't eat dinner? Your analogy is very troubling to me as an asthmatic, even though I live in a hirise and I don't have a lawn.

From: Cocoanut Koala Y'all are silly. I have academic credentials out the kazoo, awards all over my wall, top of my class, that whole business, along with being at the top in my career. Talking about grunting and all that just makes you all look silly. Part of being smart and being educated is asking questions and trying to understand things. It's how I got to BE so successful. Part of being an educator, a teacher, or even an intellectual, is being able to answer these questions without all this silly defensive condesension. Just a little tip for ya's. coco Dear gawd. I can't belive you posted that. Back on ignore with you!

From: Jonquille Noir Am I the only one that read the original post, and the post it quoted? It was not saying, "Hey, we need better performance!" It was saying, "Hey, stop working on LindeX and work on performance instead." So no, that's not what Coco, or Snakekiss, were saying. Those are two very different things, as has been pointed out several times. I think it is what we were saying. Or I was saying, anyway. But basically I'm saying it didn't matter that that is what we were saying. I was saying - what's the use of any of the stuff if we can't see or use it? That was her SIMPLE message, and mine as well. And earlier in this thread I said, well, ok, then hire more people in the right area. What Dnate said - about the quality control - that is the most hopeful answer I've gotten in this thread. coco

They are related and worked on by people with different skills and have technical names and basically everybody's right except the ones who are being condesending to users with limited technical knowledge. I wonder how silly I would sound talking to Coco about a topic related to her profession.
What I been sayin' all this time Coco is that SL is not ready for prime time. It's still a techiwiki world because the code is still being heavily developed into a production model. Nontechiwiki types stay frustrated with the service and confused about spending their money to fund a process that they don't understand or appreciate.
The fault, at this point in the cycle, is not that it doesn't work "correctly" 24/7, it's that users are being charged phenomenal amounts of money under the premise that SL is a fully functional product with an organized codebase onto which new features can be grafted without destroying the continuity of service.
In nontechnical terms, LL expanded much too quickly over far too broad a userbase. They're doing good to survive, much less make the world a pleasant place to be. In the end, nobody's happy.
