Good lord, not in the least, Fiona. We have been free of advertising spam until one particular post which others had complained about too before I chimed in (NOT your lovely horse). Signatures and friendly, "I love it where can I buy one" posts are community too.

The following is what I could do without here in this thread:

Just the hanging files inside each drawer are a sculptie.

I love the technique that you used here. The 'fake' shadows that people are using more and more in-world make an area seem much softer and more organic. It surprises me that it is so effective even though the premade shadows don't always match the world lighting.

I've experimenting with some shading on my sculptie textures, and it can def. add a stronger sense of 3D shape and realism. Here are some odd little succulent cactus type plants called Lothips. I used a photo to paint the texture and color onto the sculpted object, then drew in some shadows and shading using Photoshop. They are surprisingly realistic in-world.

Beautiful. I am a bit of a real life succulent collector. These look very true to life. And, FYI, they are lithops from the root word lithos which means stone.

Umbrellas to lanterns to palms to geodes...

I can see that my previous posts were not well received. Whoops. Truly sorry. I guess that's the one big downside to SL: there are so many ways to play that you can never be sure who's really interested in what aspects of this virtual world (or maybe that's just why I don't really like uber-organized online forums). I've gotten my fair share of cold responses from SL role-players who were shocked at my mention of "RL." I learn slowly. But, darn, one would think that I committed an act of SL tyranny based on the hostile responses here! As if I made a mistake more grave than all those folks who comment on the official Linden blog about how SL is just a nasty, bug-infested, hellish experience...

I for one am ready to put COMPUTER GAME MISTAKES behind me; let's put things into perspective, shall we? I have not come to flaunt any shops or tutorials this time.

***

I've been busy with a few sculptie projects, and I feel that I've got enough to post now. These were all made using Maya 8, a program which I am probably a little too devoted to and in love with...

Sorry if I'm breaking more rules by posting twice, but I just noticed that there's a five image limit. And I've got much to contribute.

And here are just a few more objects. Most of these would fall under the SL fine art category, I guess. A few corporate commissions mixed in here too. The final image shows versions of these objects (one is a work in progress) as rendered by Maya with raytracing...just for a fun comparison.

Thank you for viewing. (and I apologize for the slight typo in one image)

Great stuff, Indigo. I especially like the Geodes. They remind me of digging fro rocks with my Grandpa. He called them Thunder Eggs.

Great work. Is there an in-world location to see your stuff?

No it's not fake, and easily done using a script that changes the sculptie texture. Just load the textures into the prim and use an LSL script to change the textures.

The LSL function if llSetPrimitiveParams[PRIM_TYPE_SCULPTED,"texture name or UUID", PRIM_SCULPT_TYPE_SPHERE]

llSetPrimitiveParams is one way to do it, but i wouldnt recommend it looping forever this affect sim cause it use timers and sets new texture on prim, just dont like having to restort to timers much.

If there was something for sculpt alla ~llSetTextureAnim , then you could use a texture, set scale, and speed it would change and entire thing would be on your client, but this command doesnt exsist for scaling sculpt texture -.- and they would needed to up the size for it to work to, i dont think 64x64/128x128 get very detailed if you scale it to 6x6 for exsample :p

llSetPrimitiveParams
timer
llSetPrimitiveParams
timer
llSetPrimitiveParams
loop back

ect, how its done, a texture anim would be no timer, just sent one time to your client when you see it, and download texture, then started, wich would mean no timers that is on sim.

Rather than clog up the gallery with technical, see my latest post on this thread:

Sheesh... This is a hostile community. I had originally posted an announcement here about a free product and the opening of a sculptie tutorial for Maya users. But has been called "spam" by too many people. So I have deleted it. Sorry guys! I just wanted to reach out to the right people, and a forum about sculpties seemed like the right place. I guess I don't know all the rules of this digital era yet!

yeah like writin novels in a man's thread! I knew you were a spammer!

Blender to SL comparison
07-27-2007 19:05
I've tried to create a bedroom scene in Blender to see how well it comes up in SL.
Not 100% complete and with many problems, I still have a lot of work in front.
(I'll put it out if anyone wants to see it inworld)

Walls, floor and 3 cupboards are cubes. Rest are sculpty.
I think the walls were bumpmapped before uploading so they look different.

Keep up the good work people!

to my untrained eye SL looks better than blender.

nice, how you matched up the floor shadows. Were these aspects lifted from the blender output? Or did you use the blenderrender as a guide to how the shadows should lay?

and i agree the SL shot looks better. : )

just new at this but having a blast, the lathe technique I can really relate to. here's a Canopy bed i made with individual sculpty mattress and pillows but still the details are alot easier to achieve with less prims

Yes ,the floor and walls were rendered in blender with the shadows. Shadows (obviously) give it some life. Trouble is, you need to use more textures. One for each wall instead of one for both. I had to 'create' most of everything else using Gimp.

Each part of each piece of furniture should have a separate texture for rendered shadows but that is just too bandwidth expensive, so reusing just one, (like the chair arms) keeps the cost down.

One thing I have not worked out is how to get specular highlights baked in, or mapped or something without 'painting' them on.

Lol, a very simple Roman chair, but it shows what sculpties can do. The white seat is the sculpted prim, others are regular prims. Texturing still is a bitch though. :)
