I'll start with a little something I made today now that I've figured out how to do them. The sculpt and texture maps were made in 3ds Max. This is made from 8 sculpted prims. These are so going to rock!

Thanks all :) I'm really looking forward to seeing what people do with these. We're going to be seeing some amazing builds and avatars when these hit the main grid. Finally we can do organic shapes and irregular surfaces.

Really useful post - I'm surprised the sculpty prims can resolve to that level of detail. This really opens up new worlds for us content creators.

To bad the barrier to entry is so high - even if you just use Blender, you really have to know your beans in order to make anything worthwhile.

Nice modeling on the head, by the way - though I notice it degrading a bit around the ears. What causes that?

The head was really a bit too complex to be replicated by a single sculptie, and they don't handle concave surfaces very well. It looks much more complex than it really is. The texture map that was baked at the same time as the sculpt map helps maintain the illusion. I wish I could take credit for the modeling but they're exports from Poser 7. I wanted to experiement to see how difficult it would be to break a complex model down into multiple sculpties.

two more examples....
05-09-2007 14:07
These aren't mine. They are from photos I snapped on the beta grid.

The Head is a huge sculpty, I gues. See these little dots on the ground. Those are me.

You might have heard that you can throw any ole' texture on a sculpty, and get some randomish noisy shape. That's what the other picture is. Apparently the in-the-know folks call this vertex vomit...

Still, it's amazing that it does as well as it does. I was expecting far far less possible detail - so it looks like if we want to make things out of sculpty prims, we have to model in sections - the face, back to the earline, but without the neck and ears - the ears and neck as separates, with alpha blends where parts overlap to hide the seams.

One could build practically anything.

i see you're baking lighting (excellent choice.) have you tried baking ambient occlusion as well? that's the secret sauce in my fruit plate images.

Here are two items that Gearsawe Stonecutter left laying around in the sandbox.
The wave pool is animated and morph between 9 scupties.

Being a bit of a noob at rendering in passes for compositing I've yet to really play with ambient occlusion. Looks like a great way to fake global illumination. Thanks for the tip! Those fruit plate images looked great.

I think this is my favorite addition to SL, ever.

In the garden

Not my texture, or design, or prim, but I was able to rez a giant prim and convert it to a sculpted giant prim. Please, hear me O Mighty Lindens, take not away this boon, but render it for ever and ever. Amen.

And lo, a serpent appeared, bearing the fruit of the garden, and encouraged he them to rez it, and eat of the knowledge of good and primevil...

Wow :)

Can somebody point me to a thread / discussion regarding how sculpties are best textured / painted?

Do the same tools that help generate sculpties also have the capability to texture them?

'Best' is a relative term, but the wiki has detailed discussion: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Category:Sculpted_Prims should be a good starting point.

show your sculpties

here is another example work i have done in the last days. yes, sure it is better to sculpt the nose and the ears and also the mouth with extra sculpted prims for higher detail, but the first result is really good. and texturing would more difficult if using more prims for a face or whatever.

my problem is to bake taxtures with the right uv space in maya
and yes people. i'm scripting a 3ds max exporter today. hope it will be ready at evening.

some advices would help me.
