From: Jig Chippewa Then if you "feel bad" - is it "very innocent"? I know I never feel "innocent" for most of teh time. And asking questions is just me. Yes I think you can make some people feel dirty via peer pressure for almost anything actually if you are judgmental enough. You are not just asking questions though, you are passing judgments about it, saying that it is unnatural and creepy etc or at least agreeing with those sentiments. If you were purely asking questions you would not be as slanted as you are. What is the purpose of asking questions if your mind is closed? You are never going to be convinced that there is nothing wrong with this kind of roleplay, otherwise your stance would have not been so strongly against it in the first place. Oh and BTW I do not engage in this kind of roleplay but would be proud to mix with families in SL who do. In fact I have on several occasions.

From: Bella Posaner Any kid AV's willing to say how old they are in RL? i know the ages of all the kids in my family, we have rl photos of ourselves as well as sl photos hanging on our 'family wall', we have all spoken on the phone, and some of us have met in rl. these are real relationships, i think the 'real' is part of what happens when you start a sl family, even more so, my sl husband and i are now living together in rl, for almost a year. our ages range from 27 to 53, we are all adults as far as age goes, all kids at heart : )) lizzie

It has to be noted that child avatars are looked at quite differently from other types of avatar.
I did so myself until recently, but lately I've been enjoying interacting with them. I haven't run into any brats yet, but that's part of the deal... It happens in real life, after all.
I feel no curiosity whatsoever about their real life ages, just as I have no curiosity about your real life appearance. I'd rather take people in SL at face value and find out what sort of person they are. The fact that someone has an alluring avatar is not enough to make that person my friend.

From: Key MacMoragh In real life I have a child, so it's not like I want to live a fantasy I can't have in RL, but...
Lately I keep seeing child avatars and I feel this ache...
Just last night I was talking to some people and this little girl avatar came walking by, and she was so adorable, that after we talked for a bit, I had to say, "I hope some day I have a little girl just like you!"
My friend IM'd me: "Be careful..."
And after a minute or two, I had to log off anyway, but I think if I had stayed another five minutes I would have adopted the girl.
I realize that I am a sucker and an idiot, but... maybe I don't realize how much of an idiot.
SL being what it is, and me being how I am, I'm sure I will end up doing this if I don't have a good reason not to.
So, can somebody talk me out of it? If adopting a child in SL is something you think may make you happy, then I say go for it. Don't let anyone talk you out of something that could bring you a lot of joy.

I don't see why we should talk you out of it unless it is going to cause you to incur some strenuous ongoing financial burden that is beyond your means and you just can't help yourself. I don't understand how people find child avatars "creepy" in and of themselves versus some of the other stuff that is out there. It's just roleplay. As someone else put it, a Disney-like fantasy. What's the big deal? Adopting one isn't my cup of tea, but why is it so hard to respect people that do? Sexual ageplay is a different thing altogether - or any kind of play that involves harming a child. But "adult babies" - people who have an adult av but wear diapers - that weirds me out more than someone playing a 5 year old. But hey, that's just not my kink. Anyway, if you want to adopt a kid, go for it. Just don't get any brats.

From: Imnotgoing Sideways I was never born. (^_^) I always was. (^_^) I'm a demon goddess from the third level of hell and I use Second Life to connect myself to this feeble mudball and its meatsack residents. (^_^) It's 'real life' that's the game. (^_^)y Ahem...just so nobody who reads this thread gets the wrong impression: Immy's talk about being creepy/scary/weird is just talk. She's about as creepy as a two-week-old kitten.

Pfagh. Bleached skin and dark clothing doesn't impart a sense of danger! There needs to be something actually DANGEROUS to provoke the fear...

From: Gabriele Graves Yes I think you can make some people feel dirty via peer pressure for almost anything actually if you are judgmental enough.
And, of course, YOU dont pass judgements? No, of course not. Why not ask questions just to spur some thought? You think university profs don't know teh answers to questions they pose? Or have an opinion? Or journalists dont slant it so they can get a "rise" from their target? Do you seriously think that when a journalist starts to write they dont take a stance? Read editor's opinions. You/me have a different view of things and I have an opinion on practically everything - I still ask questions coz I am very curious about how people feel. S'all - no big deal.

From: Jig Chippewa And, of course, YOU dont pass judgements? If I am honestly seeking answers then even if my mind is leaning towards a certain direction I try to keep that out of my questioning and at least try to keep an open mind. From: Jig Chippewa No, of course not. Why not ask questions just to spur some thought? You think university profs don't know teh answers to questions they pose? There, so you think you already have the answers. That is not the sign of an open questing mind to me. Also on such subjects there are no correct or incorrect answers, just opinions. You are entitled to feel the way you do about anything however it is my opinion that you have repeatedly tried to cast SL adoption and people role-playing in families in a bad light and that is pushing an agenda in my book, not asking honest questions. From: Jig Chippewa Or have an opinion? Or journalists dont slant it so they can get a "rise" from their target? Do you seriously think that when a journalist starts to write they dont take a stance? Read editor's opinions. You/me have a different view of things and I have an opinion on practically everything - I still ask questions coz I am very curious about how people feel. S'all - no big deal. Sure you can have an opinion, that was never in question and on the subject of journalism unless the piece is marked as Op-Ed then being slanted should be avoided at all costs. Of course it isn't but that is why I take much of what I read and see in the media very sceptically. You say you are curious about how people feel but why are people going to feel inclined to discuss their feelings honestly with you if they think that you will only disapprove? Yes some have come forward, I wonder how many more are reluctant to do so? My advice would be to try to at least seem a little more neutral in your stances when bringing up these subjects for discussion as getting a "rise" on this kind of thing is only going to make people feel defensive.
