i think it really stinks!
im not a gambler, i live in las vegas! but i feel it is our freedom in sl to do what we want as along as we arent hurting no one else..... and that these gambling devices arent rigged to the benefit of the owner!
people pay good money in sl whether it is rl dollars or Lindens, i found my self buying lindens to invest in stuff in sl. Why should i invest in anything in Second Life, and if you all are smart you will stop investing also...
most people dont have jobs in sl, and gambling is thier way of making money why should we recieve a slap on the wrist for gambling in Second Life!I DONT SEE MY SELF SITTING INS CHAIRS TO MAKE A LIVING, I WOULD HAVE TO SIT THER A YEAR TO MAKE 20 US DOLLARS, will that be illegal to? it is a SECOND LIFE, and Not REAL LIFE..... and as long as we are over age which most are why shouldnt we be allowed to do what we want as long as we arent grieving with others!
SECOND LIFE IS GETTING TO MUCH LIKE REAL WITH ALL THESE LAWS!!!IF EVERYONE STOP BUYING LINDENSS YOU SEE HOW FAST THEY WILL CHANGE THEIR POLICIES.
i dont think sl is for the people any more, the lindens made enough money, so tough crap on the players who enjoy that kind of FUN, that is what it is FUN, it isnt real life!!!! why should we have to suffer with this new law!? WHAT ABOUT SPLOADERS, MONEY CHAIRS, or ESCORTS are you gonna crack down on them!? that is illegal in real life? you gonna make it illegal in Second life to?
well people i suggest you stop buying linden dollars, because they eventually gonna tax you on that to! this game starting to get crazy! I THINK IT IS TIME TO GO BACK TO ANOTEHR ONLINE WORLD because SL is starting to reallly go DOWN HILL!

It's just moving data, it's hardly a mammoth task. They start by replicating data to new servers outside the US.

That has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I've heard this week. You think they can just pick up & move over a weekend or something?

Technically, they would have to seek out adequate server infrastructure to run the game - which is not something you can take lightly. You can't just walk over to Servers-R-Us & set up a server farm, you know. That alone can take months, if not years, to do the research & come to an agreement. Of course, once they found a location & made all the legal arrangements then they set up the clustering, and migrate everything across several thousand machines. Of course, they'd have to shut down the grid to do this so that the data remained static (which no doubt would cause massive worldwide suffering, given the reaction to 1/2-day maintenance fixes...)

But let's consider the full scope of this idea: If they move to another country then all office assets would most likely have to be disposed of & reacquired, as a) it would probably be cheaper than moving them, and b) much of their 110v equipment simply wouldn't work on a different power grid.

Let's not forget that they have tons of employees to move - somebody's got to actually DO the replication work, and the maintenance, keep the game running, etc. - so they would also have to put them up in hotels or apartments while the migration is going on, as it would probably take some time for them to move their households to another country...many may not want to move, and would have to be replaced...

If they move to a country that is not primarily English-speaking, you can add difficulties due to language barriers...

Then there's re-structuring all their financials, because they are in a different economy with a different currency, different tax structures, different costs of living & doing business...

So yeah, It's really reasonable to expect LL to just pick up & move so you can sit around pulling on virtual slot machines.

If this includes the Zyngo type of games that were conceptualized and created within SL, you're going to see a major trickle-down effect. Just wait and watch. Only time will tell.

What do you think drove the initial growth of the internet itself? Sex and gambling. Without those two things the internet would not have grown half as fast as it did. Just the way the world works.

Some trickle down, yes, but not all of it will be bad. A drop in land prices will mean more money to be spent on other things or bigger houses and more furniture being bought.

As I type this the Grid Status box lists 1.7 members logging in during the past 60 days, be a cynic and call half of them alts. So you have 850,000 people logging in the past 60 days. Usually when I log in there are around 40,000 people on line at a time. How many of these are gambling to support their SL? And how much are they winning? (or camping in casinos)

As for your last claim, show me some numbers. Just because sex makes up a large number of internet sites, doesn't mean it was the engine driving the growth.

I agree they should give people time to actually close down their gambling without getting banned.

But that amnesty need not include allowing them to continue to operate gambling.

Then for what pray tell would the amnesty be? The only activity that is subject to action under the policy is the actual gambling, not ownership of gambling machines or having them sitting out on your owned or rented land. If it is not allowed to happen for a period of time to allow people to actually get up to speed log in and take them off the land then there is no amnesty.

Pretty simple

See someone with gambling stuff out- tell him to remove it or you delete it,

But since its amnesty - no further punishment is meted out.

Well you know many people assume that sex is the driving force for many here .( well those taht are under 18 yes! and we have a large population on sl ). So i can understand that persons comments.

You have some very good comment about population..........I would like to know more about those numbers myself.

I'll believe it when I see it... seems like this is just another "we'll post a scary blog to make the non-SL public happy and then never really do anything about it."

Anyone remember age verification, adult parcel flags, revamped search engines, traffic going away, etc etc? *snorts*

Like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.

Well gambling is a freedom issue.

Its not really a money issue as far as the participants are concerned,

Since the Gamblers finance everything , by LOSING.

Call to the US DoJ for a Full Scale Investigation of SL
07-26-2007 09:51
Today I've been made aware by SL that my activity here in a make-believe world is actually real and subject to the laws of the United States. In lieu of this, I request that the United States law enforcement conduct a full scale investigation into the entire platform, software, and business called Second Life. During your investigations please ask yourselves and answer the following questions:

1. Did SL knowingly create a platform and allow illegal gambling within its' software?
2. Did SL knowingly profit in any way from those illegal gambling transactions?
3. Did SL profit from the laundering of those illegal funds?
4. Does SL profit from residents within their software and business by allowing the operation of an unregulated and unlicensed stock market trading platforms?
5. Does SL profit from residents within their software and business by allowing the operation of ponzi and pyramid schemes?
6. Does SL itself operate and profit from operating their own unlicensed and unregulated currency exchange?
7. Is SL aware of underage players being subject to adult sexual subject matter, or have they made the necessary investments in technology to do all they can to eliminate this?
8. Is SL being used as a platform for international terrorists to launder funds?

My safety and the purity of the internet depends upon you the US DoJ, to protect me, and to rid the world of all bad things. I wish you luck!

In the meantime, I have sold all my assets within SL and cancelled my Premium account. I will not frequent or contribute funds into Sl until you have completed your investigation and delivered your report.

Oh forgive me, I was under the impression that they already had the technology, yes I can see why it would take months or even years to put in place infrastructure that is very similar to that which they already have, how silly of me.

They bank in the UK already, did you miss the news of that move? They have corporate presence in many other countries already. So yes it can be done.

Uh, Vegas? Could you possibly react more like a spoiled child with the "If I can't have my fun no one can!" attitude? Be glad you got to enjoy yourself doing what you did while you did. You can't expect LL to go to prison on your behalf. Oh wait... it seems you do.

With the name Vegas I can only assume his primary SL activity revolved around gambling in some way.

there's going to be no backing down by LL. This will all blow over and the gambling will be gone.

The gambling group is a small minority in SL. Throwing fits and making threats does nothing.

Couldn't you make all the script open source and then anyone playing the game is simply "learning how to program"... :)

But is it Toy? look at the money chair they have in their casinos etc.......How can that be such a small % as you say? If their business relies on it? I think its much higher then you might think.............. But Gambling will be gone for sure! For good or Bad. Its just another part of SL History just like Bonus(s) for Rating, Dwelling, etc etc etc..........And common sence for that matter...............

Is how you see the economy in SL? Do you really think a healthy economy is made up of people who buy their currency, spend it, and then just go buy more without producing? If LL was primarily concerned with selling $L they wouldn't have done this.

That sort of unimaginative perspective is the whole problem with SL right now, honestly. People see it as some sort of economy sim where the activities are just a ploy to make people spend. That's like someone saying the point of RL is seeing how economically successful you could be.

The economy will be healthy when there is a large enough population of consumers who are here creating content and spending money without the driving need to be Anshe Chung. Speculators, "entrepreneurs", casino barons, etc., are fine as long as they hang limply off the side of an economy, but you can't make an economy out of them alone.

Didn't they drop dwell yet? Make every machine open source, explain the game is designed to take your money and use the source code is proof. After players are given a brief tutorial on software development, they "gamble" and compare what is going on with the game with what the source code looks like. The more they gamble, the better they understand the code, and the fact that gambling is fixed.

Is there a ban on that???

I think the percentage would be lower than I think.. In 3.5 years in SL I only have met 2-3 people who gamble. You are right Usagi... gambling is gone like many other things and no protesting is going to change that.
