From: Jack Digeridoo Didn't they drop dwell yet? Make every machine open source, explain the game is designed to take your money and use the source code is proof. After players are given a brief tutorial on software development, they "gamble" and compare what is going on with the game with what the source code looks like. The more they gamble, the better they understand the code, and the fact that gambling is fixed.
Is there a ban on that??? Sorry, I didn't mean to be flip. Well, I did, but only because I guess I mistook a "smiley" for a "wink" in the earlier post. As a serious suggestion, though, I don't think it can work because however LL's ban is worded, such an activity would get LL in legal trouble if L$s are involved in "playing" the device, the device pays out with some probability, and L$s are convertible to some RL currency. (An imperfect analogy, but: I can't legally deal blackjack just because I call it "probability tutoring".) (oh, yeah, "dwell" : it is indeed archaic; I meant it to be quaintly synonymous with "traffic."

From: Zen Zeddmore 'Twasn't quite like that. Actually a very few pron sites spured a lot of ppl wanting to get online which started to spur ISP development who seeing why ppl were getting online started offering hosting .......
so try again. Zen, if people like pron, more power to them though I don't myself. Its odd because people who enjoy porn use the same argument and I wonder why they have to legitimize their enjoyment of it. If it works for you, bang on but please don't credit it with all the tech advancement in the world.

From: Chip Midnight Uh, Vegas? Could you possibly react more like a spoiled child with the "If I can't have my fun no one can!" attitude? Be glad you got to enjoy yourself doing what you did while you did. You can't expect LL to go to prison on your behalf. Oh wait... it seems you do. Chip, For full disclosure, I really don't enjoy playing any casino type games in SL. For that I can fly to Vegas for free being a Harrah’s Diamond Club member. I did for a short period of time own Zyngo machines and some slots. I sold them all last week along with all my land. I feel terrible for the new owner. The post about the DoJ was meant as sarcasm, but also to make people aware of what a slippery slope this can become. But the things that really make me upset are what my US Government is and has been doing, all purely driven by greed 1. The UIGEA was passed by the US government purely based upon greed. They couldn't stand the large quantity of funds that were being transacted without any being collected by them in the way of taxes. Gambling is everywhere in this country. The local, state and federal governments make millions off of it. They passed this law because they basically can't find their dik in the dirt, and where too unorganized and stupid to quickly organize a way to license, regulate and tax the industry. They missed the boat, so to save face and protect their own gambling interests and those of special interests they passed a sneaky law that would make the transfer of those funds illegal. Barney Frank is currently working to get this nonsense straightened out. So now the US Government infringes on my freedoms and makes certain things illegal only because they can't find a way to get their grubby tax hands on some of the revenue. Now that pisses me off. 2. It also pisses me off when a truly international company like SL profits and then takes the easy way out of a situation and bends over for these US clowns. Make a statement and move your company as fast as you can to another country. One that does not selectively infringe on their citizens rights and freedoms for asinine and self-serving reasons. I thought SL was a truly international environment and I just don't see why those residents who don't live under the sardonic rule of this nonsense are forced to suffer from it. For the record I am from the US, but got sick of this crap, and moved to another country last year.

Sigh, when did sensation replace feeling and awareness? We used to know the difference now it is as though if there is no immediate gratification at the easiest level, there is nothing else to do.
SL has a lot to offer in mind expansion, human interaction, beauty, creativity, education, learning biz skills, etc.
I am so sad that being part of the evolution that created this level of freedom, I also now have to witness the loss of perception of the bigger experiences.
The joy of awe? The awakening of the mind to a new thought or understanding? Realizing one's place in time, the historical sense of self?
Gee, just give me a chemical brew called pop, turn on the idiot tube, watch me one hand type and I'll complain like a two year old if you take my crap away.
I guess its an evolution that we don't have to congregate in the coliseum now to debase ourselves by surrendering our whole selves to vulgar display, we can do it at home.
Geez...

And even if they did, gamblers would just ignore your coding lesson, ignore the source code you were asking them to consult as they played. Still, I wish gambling wasn't banned, and that education about gambling was enforced by every casino. Every table should have sign that reads 99% of the people lose X amount of money per hour at this table. It's a chance to learn math and they ban it. Smart. From: someone (oh, yeah, "dwell" : it is indeed archaic; I meant it to be quaintly synonymous with "traffic." Ahh ok, I haven't been in world in a long time, im on dialup

So it can't be, it's totally outside of the realm of possibility, that the US government passed the UIGEA to maybe safeguard a portion of the population who perhaps don't understand that gambling is always going to profit the owner of the games? Or might it be that whilst they were looking for their "diks" they realized that it would be impossible to regulate electronic slot machines, to ensure that they were "fair"?

From: Grantly Hamilton The U.S. citizens have to start wondering why you're generalized and dis-liked by alot of the world. You're so far from freedom it's not even funny. I find this very insulting and offensive. If you don't like what were doing in the good ol' US of A, then stay in your part of the world and stay out of ours. You have to wonder why you rarely, if ever, hear American citizens complain about how things are in other parts of the world, but for some reason citizens of every other part of the world feels compelled to get in the US business and have a political statement or opinion as to how things are, or should be in the United States. Here are a couple of options for you as it pertains to this thread. 1. If you dont like SL or the way that it is run due to the fact it is created by a US company, then create your own SL or have one of your country's wonderful citizens create a facsimile of SL, and 2. If you don't like the United States of America, then don't visit us. Thank you.

LL should be prepared for alot of protests and alot of accounts closing due to this, Gambling was a very handsome and attractive feature in SL and if it's gone, SL i going to deteriorate itself. I surehope all the protests work as this policy is unfair in my and alot of other's eyes.

After all you are not the one living in the belly of the beast, are you? Its been so long since anyone saw a real empire - they are inventing one and using the US as the stand in. Simple as that, really.

Ummm... well, there's a big difference between gambling where the odds are based on chance as in RL casinos and government lotteries, and "gambling" where the odds are dynamically shaped to maximize the Partial Reinforcement Extinction Effect (for example).

I already voted with my pocketbook. Downgraded from premium to basic as of this morning. (No, I dont frequent the casinos, but it is TOTALLY unfair to my friend who just had a year's hard work reduced to nothing with no warning)

Thank you. Don't worry...most of Europe's entertainment is based on US entertainment anyway only watered down...there'll be a EUSL soon enough! You'll have to get approval on what you type before other people will see your IMs or chat...the company running the service will take away and redistribute your inventory if you have more stuff than everyone else...great fun! What's funny is that all the countries that are critical of the US are doing so out of jealousy. They'd be doing what we're doing if they had the resources. You think the US invented imperialism?? Get a clue, have-nots. You're just as human and greedy as we are. We've just been able to pull it off better...

/me looks forward to the day when China becomes THE superpower, then the Rest-of-World will spend its free time picking them to bits.
Mah fellow Amuricans, being reviled and loathed en masse comes with the turf. Best to ignore it as graciously as possible. And try, try to communicate to the ROW how big and diverse a place the U.S. is ... there are groups in the States working toward every goal any critic could possibly envision. If you want to change U.S. policy or actions, find a group there working toward your wished-for change and send it money.
I further think that calling citizens of other countries *jealous* or otherwise baiting them is unseemly for citizens of a superpower, and unhelpful in conversation. Just my personal opinion. When others frustrated by the U.S.'s omnipresence voice it strongly, hey, it costs little to simply ignore any unpleasantness.
*runs for cover*
*edited to add comment about jealous*
