I admit....I've lost sleep many nights over the sage versus avocado versus olive green dilemma.
Risky...I know...considering the political ramifications....but used all three phrases.
Now these are phrases....not just a word....sage sofa....avocado sofa....olive green sofa....
And really pushing the limits on using the word "green" with olive....everyone knows that is redundant....such as saying "furniture, furniture".....same thing. I've heard several times here in forum that some people have a gripe with redundancy.
The phrases are on the actual product...so we're talking about not only your analysis and judgment of how we choose to word our ads and parcels....but how we choose to label hundreds of objects...and your assessment of those phrases being acceptable or defined as related or not.....a bit treacherous there.
I'm feeling a huge forest green and hunter green streak coming on....and may be so brazen as to imply that the sofa is a couch....or heaven forbid a settee...do Americans even use the word settee? .....little bit of a jab there toward the Americans.

From: Phil Deakins What you think of keywords is wrong then. Actual keywords are *only* in the minds of the writers. They are the words that the writer is targeting, and they can be placed anywhere on the page, and not just in the title (parcel name). They can be placed there, of course, but merely being there doesn't make them keywords.
There are no keywords. There are keywords. Make up your mind. So you're saying that, if a place uses the description field for *all* of its seats - couches, chairs, stools, whatever - to include the phrase, "ideal for cuddles, spankings and even for sex", then the words "cuddles, "spankings" and "sex" are not keywords as far as you're concerned? You have a lot to learn, Sling. Incidentally, there is no meta keywords tag on the pages. I guess you heard of that tag somewhere, and misunderstood what it is. Nothing new there.[/QUOTE] Read what I wrote: From: Sling Trebuchet I suppose you could put sentences in your parcel description text like "sofas and chairs would make a wonderful cushion for the next "spank" session....and don't forget that those rugs make a lovely backdrop for the "orgy." Your problem is that the space available for your own text is limited and saying that might scare off some of your market. If that is the only connection that you would have to 'spank' and 'orgy' then I would say that putting them as keywords in your parcel description would be misleading.
I was talking about using the main body of the text in a page. Packing such words into item descriptions would be misleading. They don't describe the items. Wasting the little parcel text space that one has in order to suggest unusual uses for the items on sale, Certain sections of a page could be said to be 'key'. The page title is definitely one. The link text for Picks is another. You could arege that every word on a page is key, but that would be to deny the importance of words in specific areas. Yes I know that the SL generated pages don't have that meta. I can see the page sources. I know that the GSA wouldn't use them anyway. It's in the documentation. I think it should have the option. The GSA is primarily an enterprise tool. Admins of an enterprise would have an influence over the standards used in the body of information being indexed. It should therefore be possible for them to organise gaming of the indexing to suit the needs of the enterprise. The theory is that everybody is inside the tent pissing out, and that there are no parts of the enterprise pissing inside. In SL, I think that having a specific section of parcel data for a limited number of explicit keywords would be very helpful if that section could be specially tagged for indexing. It would help to encourage rational parcels names and description texts.

From: Sling Trebuchet When I think of keywords in the SL parcel html page, I think of the title - The Parcel name That's where people try to pack in relevant words because the search engines give attention to page titles. Which is a great shame because it has led to parcel names not actually being parcel names, but I can't see a way of fixing that.

oh geez....I've messed up again.
Right in the middle of Phil's thread....I've tried to explain a concept....and don't you know......the words I used to explain it are now "keywords" in the forum search. It's going to lead someone who is looking for an avocado sofa right into the resident answer section.....totally misleading them.....when that should only be allowed in the classified product section. How Rude!
And Phil's going to get pissed at me for false advertising right in the middle of his thread. You're welcome to even up the score, Phil....if you want to tuck Chesterfield Sofa and Purple Leather into my next thread. No hard feelings.
If you would be so kind as to not use the word "Luscious" with your Purple....I combine that with the word Lavender, to totally exploit it. Could you use the word "Heavenly" instead? or how about "Passion Purple"....I bet there are some people right now typing "Passion" into their search.....but man, I hope they're not the type who would go ballistic if it pulls up a sofa......not exactly what they had on their mind.....if you know what I mean.

From: Sling Trebuchet There are no keywords. There are keywords. Make up your mind. My mind hasn't changed. If you could read, you would have seen that I wrote that keywords are in the minds of the writers. They don't actually exist except there. Perhaps you could get someone to read and explain things for you. Do you have someone with you in RL? From: Sling Trebuchet Read what I wrote: I did read what you wrote. It was this:- From: Sling Trebuchet When I think of keywords in the SL parcel html page, I think of the title - The Parcel name That's where people try to pack in relevant words because the search engines give attention to page titles. That's what I replied to - not the bit you quoted. From: Sling Trebuchet I was talking about using the main body of the text in a page. Packing such words into item descriptions would be misleading. They don't describe the items. You were talking about what you think of as keywords - in the Parcel's name. Do try to keep up, Sling. From: Sling Trebuchet Certain sections of a page could be said to be 'key'. The page title is definitely one. The link text for Picks is another. You could arege that every word on a page is key, but that would be to deny the importance of words in specific areas. oooo. That's a sneaky change of topic. Shame on you! Stand up and fight like a man, and continue the discussion! Don't try to steer us away from what we're talking about just because your arguments are being shot down in flames. Your sneaky quoting of the wrong bit of your post didn't work, and neither will this.

It's the result of trying to push the square peg that is SL into the round hole that is the GSA but, even so, it still produces the best results that SL has ever had - by a very long way.

I hope it wasn't the latter. I don't fancy being flirted with by a guy - especially one with man boobs.

Not sure if this counts as interesting but I now have two results in the search website http://world.secondlife.com/resident/1117dbc5-c005-40ca-8b59-5b51f96d1b7bhttp://world.secondlife.com/a/resident/1117dbc5-c005-40ca-8b59-5b51f96d1b7bSo I guess my picks count for double. Newer avatars only have a single entry I think so that could explain some of the slight reordering people are seeing.

From: Sling Trebuchet Downphil - Coming to a cinema near you. I actually thought that was pretty tasteless. But then again, even I am sensitive when it comes to certain things in German history. *shrugs*

My alts don't, concierge level maybe? I think we'll find that many/most of us have two pages. I do. My understanding is that the sub-foldering of resident pages is something recent. It could simply be very sensible forward planning with an eye on vastly expanded resident numbers. Dumping everyone into a single folder would not be a good plan. The presence of two pages does not necessarily entail a double whammy in Search rankings. The GSA is set up to crawl the pages. It is told where to crawl and what directories not to crawl. If it's crawling both pages, then the effect will disappear overnight once LL realise what's happening. -- unless it's intentional and it's intended to give more weight to certain accounts. We'd have to know the purpose of the "/resident" v. "a/resident" structure.

No this is different Sling, I actually have three if you count the standard profile, I now have two web profiles, you only have one. Go to: http://search.secondlife.com/search.phpThen you'll see what Elan and I are talking about. Not sure what it means, if anything, the new one doesn't show up if you search for people so maybe it's a glitch, it doesn't seem to be categorised.

Yeah, it was a screw-up. Among other things, it broke all those "profile picture projector" things while only the "/a/" flavor of profile was populated.

You do have 2 webpages, Ciaran, but one is in the /a directory, which is a mistake that LL made and have rectified. They are leaving the /a ones in place for a short period in case anyone was using those URLs.

Hmm if I search for Elanthius Flagstaff using all search I see: Resident profile: Elanthius Flagstaff Elanthius Flagstaff Elanthius Flagstaff The last one doesn't have a person icon next to it. If I search for Sling Trebuchet I get: Resident profile: Sling Trebuchet Sling Trebuchet But I don't see a Sling Trebuchet without a person icon next to it. Qie's comment that it's a mess up does seem to make sense as the link without the person icon does lead to the same page. Ah and Phil confirms Qie's point. Nothing to see here then

OK. I was web-searching People rather than All.
Well, there ya go. For one shining moment, we were on a "/A" list !

here's one thing i see different, which explains my current placement- some avatars who have my land in their picks are not showing up in the search under that land's name. in other words, their pick of my land is not counting towards my land. this is directly related to last login dates, and/or length of login.

Well, I can't wrap my brain around whatever it is that is messing up the search for some of you. All the searches I generally test for myself are coming out the same as they always have. I see no differences.
Is there something I can pinpoint for you - that I am doing or not doing - that will explain that. I sure don't have a clue.

I agree with that, Mickey. I haven't noticed anything that has changed from when the All search first came in - except the recent flaw that inspired this thread, but that was dealt with in a few days. If there have been other temporary flaws, I've forgotten them, but I've seen no reason to adjust my thinking away from what it was at the outset.
It's possible that rankings are seen to change because more and more people gain knowledge on how to rank highly, and they push some of the previously high-ranked pages down.
