From: Claire Silverspar Scylla, I always though Rachel McAdams was really good! That was part of the reason I want to see it (the rest is somethig to do with Downey Jr and Jude Law ) If you ignore that it was based on a classic, and just took it as an action film, was it good? I think, honestly, that I've never seen her in any movies before this. (Yes, that's right: I have never seen "The Notebook." She may be a brilliant actress for all that I know, but, truly, I saw no evidence of it in this movie. It's a shame, I guess: she's Canadian and grew up very near me. I suppose it would be more patriotic if I liked her . . . If you sort of forget that this is supposed to be Conan Doyle's Holmes, it's not a bad film. It's entertaining, anyway. And yes, with some very nice eye candy . . . From: Kaimi Kyomoon I'm not usually a big fan of violence either, and yet some of my favorite movies are full of it. "Pulp Fiction", "Kill Bill", "Fight Club"...
As for Guy Ritchie I guess I've only seen "Lock Stock and Smoking Barrel" and "Snatch" - both of which I liked a lot. Yeah. I don't actually mind violence in films too much, although I avoid REALLY violent films just because I know that I'll spend half of my time staring at the floor or covering my eyes. But if it's appropriate to the genre or to the narrative intent, I can handle even pretty graphic stuff. I loved Sexy Beast, for instance. This film's violence is really not much worse than that in, say, an Indiana Jones flick, so it's not of the stare-into-the-bag-of-buttered-popcorn variety. My objections to the violence are really that they don't belong in a Sherlock Holmes movie. Or at least, should be much less conspicuous than they are. Holmes is NOT Sam Spade, after all, and while he does have his occasional "physical" side, what makes him awesome (and, sometimes, kind of sexy) is his mind.

From: Joshooah Lovenkraft I still like 24 after all these years. In many ways, it is past its prime with respect to Jack being the archetype of the post 9/11 Bush years of just get it done at all costs with little respect to legal niceties. The storyline has evolved into the psychological impact of his past, although there still is lots of awesome gratuitous violence. I hope Chloe has a bigger role than she did last season as she's one of my favourite characters on the show and the Rene storyline seems like it will be interesting. The last scene of last night's premiere was great .. I actually yelled out OMG and then started laughing hysterically. unlike you, i have been HOPING they would kill Chloe off. i seriously cannot stand her constant scowl. does she know how to smile? raise her brows? do ANYTHING with her brows besides hold them down and scowl? her acting is so flat and it really annoys me. sheesh last season Rene found out she has a dark side, and i don't think she's afraid of it anymore. i totally gasped, and then applauded to see the severed limb. those who haven't seen the history of the show don't know that Jack used to torture info out of people in this fashion. i miss that part of Jack. lastly, i take no responsibility for someone else's addiction. i simply exposed Eli to something way cool. it's his own fault that he liked it. now, EVERYBODY GET DOWN!!!

From: Maureen Boccaccio Mom came home from the rehab center (did I tell you that already??); she and Dad are settled back in at their place, and everything's moving along nicely - and Dad's getting some rest, too! We're taking it one day at a time. this is great news!

Watched the first few episodes of 24 and liked it, but got drawn away from it. I didn't have a DVR back then. I have been meaning to get the dvd's and start over. I'm still working through Battlestar Galactica right now, though. The same thing happened with The Soprano's. I watched season one religiously, but dropped out and caught up just in time for the finale. @Mo:

DAMN IT! No I would be MAD MAD MAD if they killed off Chloe!!!! Her scowl and quirky, cantankerous nature is something I absolutely adore about her character. I also love the fact that she somehow is always capable of breaking into the most secure security systems in the world and can upload the relevant information to Jack's PDA. I'm sure she could even do it on a Commodore 64. Rene I was unsure about last season but it looks like things could get really interesting. Freddy Prince Jr .. meh.

Oh and 3 ... the Department of Homeland Security apparently has a "Project Chloe" named after the 24 character. It looks at using unmanned drones to protect American airports from potential missile threats. SO THERE http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2007-03-22-unmanned-drones_N.htmI've also read some people speculate that Chloe may have an autism spectrum disorder like Asperger's syndrome, which might explain her technical prowess and her awkward social skills. I would be sad if she got killed off so no talk of such blasphemy!!

From: Brenda Connolly It's going to be tough in Mass now that there are no more Kennedys to trot out there. At least ones who haven't been caught molesting babysitters or other zany hijinx. Oh, there are plenty of Kennedys. None of them wanted to run, though. I just got *real* telephone call from one of Martha's friends, and he said they are within one percentage point, which I took to mean one percent. I don't think they can have a runoff if there are only two candidates. Well, there really are three, but the third guy doesn't count. He's actually (oh, I forgot!) a Republican who's last name happens to be Kennedy. He's just hanging in there, hoping to get lucky.

Hi Dakkar, welcome to the thread. From: Brenda Connolly I thought it made for an interesting dichotomy. Total success! From: Scylla Rhiadra I...
I agree that the character of Sherlock Holmes is all about using his brain rather than violence. It does sound as if the best way to watch this movie is to accept that this is a different Holmes and Watson in a parallel universe. And don't do it too soon after reading Sir Arthur's version. (I can put up with movie violence as long as it advances the plot of an interesting movie.) From: Soji Slade I just learned that Robert B. Parker died yesterday. He was one of my favorite authors. I've never read any of his books - I should look for them next time I'm at the library. From: 3Ring Binder unlike you, i have been HOPING they would kill Chloe off. i seriously cannot stand her constant scowl. does she know how to smile? raise her brows? do ANYTHING with her brows besides hold them down and scowl? her acting is so flat and it really annoys me. sheesh last season Rene found out she has a dark side, and i don't think she's afraid of it anymore. i totally gasped, and then applauded to see the severed limb. those who haven't seen the history of the show don't know that Jack used to torture info out of people in this fashion. i miss that part of Jack. lastly, i take no responsibility for someone else's addiction. i simply exposed Eli to something way cool. it's his own fault that he liked it. now, EVERYBODY GET DOWN!!! Jack has stopped torturing people? Then I'm going to start watching again. Chloe is my favorite character. And I love chocolate. But I still love you. Another rainy, dark, windy day in San Diego. In the north part of the county they have been getting thunder and lightning, golf ball size hail and are currently under a tornado warning. Gosh.

Yeah but how many without police records? If this were Jersey, when they call you could negotiate for your vote. Get a free ride to the poll, maybe lunch, perhaps even 20 bucks. Even more, if you offer to vote more than once.

They are really taking losing the game that hard? I'm with you on movie violence. I'm not squeamish at all, I like a good tarantino or Peckinpah flick as much as the next girl, unless she happens to be Scylla, but it has to be in SOME context of the story. This may be a shocker, but I feels the same way about sex scenes to some extent. I enjoy a good steamy scene, I bet even Scylla does, but sometimes there is a movie or TV show where it happens and it's like..."There is no way a sex scene belongs there." And even F bombs should be strategically placed, unless of course it is a Mafia Movie.
