I think we probably do have some sort of genetic pre-disposition to trying to solve our problems through violence. As the world's human population increases and its resources decrease exponentially this would probably be a good time to try really hard to think of a way to get that tendency under control.

I'm sorry Oryx, but I refuse to accept that we have some sort of genetic predisposition for killing each other. Overcoming such "biological imperatives" is precisely the point of "culture," and, on the whole, humans have done a pretty good job over the last 100,000 years or so of abandoning a whole lot of such "predispositions."

History suggests the main advances we have made regarding killing each other involve improving the efficiency of the process.

While I will readily grant that such a statistic on its own can merely be suggestive, rather than conclusive in any way, I'd like to point, with reference to the issue of gun control, to these stats from the "Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems" (1998 - 2000)

From: someone
Murder with Firearms: Per Capita, by Country.

United States: 0.0279271 per 1,000 people
Canada: 0.00502972 per 1,000 people
United Kingdom: 0.00102579 per 1,000 people

The per capita rate of Canada, which has reasonably stringent gun control, is less than one fifth that of the United States. That of the United Kingdom, also with gun control, is lower still. Both the United Kingdom and Canada are comparable with the US in other regards: all three are relatively wealthy nations with very diverse populations and high levels of immigration from all over the world.

Yes, it is only suggestive. According to the same document a Canadian woman is 2 1/2 times more likely to be raped than an American woman. People in the U.S. are 30% less likely to be the victim of a burglary (home invasion) than their Canadian counter part. I may be considered a cold hearted SOB but I would rather have a corpse on the floor than a rapist on the loose.

Firearms are inanimate, blaming them for peoples actions is like blaming the structure for killing the guy who jumps off a ten story building. Water and fire both kill hundreds of thousands of people a year, they do so with very little help from man. Where are the outcries against the elements?

Perhaps a better analogy would be cars?

In the case of accidental shootings, yes. I am referring to intentional death with my analogy.
I refer to the elements because the human factor is removed almost all together.

Yay!

In an effort to get this thread back on track, and return to the largely inconsequential fluff that it was REALLY made for, I am going to graciously decline to answer Rafe's point with the incredibly insightful, witty, and eloquent deathblow that (I assure you, really) I COULD deliver (if I so chose) and instead echo Nika's astute point.

YAY!!

:)

Big hugs to Lexxi... I do feel your sadness. Your kitty was ever so blessed to be yours.

Gonna avoid the heavy subject matter at hand so yes, Yay Ava! Great pics!

And... I was inworld but SL was so borked that I just stayed home and cuddled with Amelia bear in my new jammies courtesy of The Accidental Avatar! I love them so much!

So... jury duty.

It was fine. We sat in the jury selection pool room for five hours and they let most of us go. They did make one jury, but I wasn't in that group.

Outside the room was a nice rotunda where we could stretch our legs and look at the people on the other floors.

I couldn't chat with anyone because the room was so small. No one talked. One guy fell asleep and snored, very lightly. I read an entire fat little book.

And that was it.

Oh, they showed us an orientation film about being a juror, and the first to speak was a judge who had a problem with r's: "Twial by juwy is a fundamental pawt of the Amewican system of justice." Nobody laughed though. I bit my tongue.

Now I'm good for three years. Massachusetts has a one day/one trial system for jurors - you go for one day, unless you're impaneled for a trial. And they can only call you once every three years.

I went through it last week, same ending, fortunately. They let us all go at 2:30 after a nice long lunch break where I got some shopping in. The county I live in also has the one day setup now, thankfully. It wasn't a bad experience , all in all. They paid for our parking, and the jury room was big, with plenty of coffee and other snacks. They also had WiFi, for those so inclined to use it.

Lexxi, I'm sorry to hear about your Kitty. Boomer sends hugs too.

Ava is right, this thread needs to be put on it's course of inconsequential fluff...luckily, that is my specialty.

Let's all go shopping. You can ride with me.

Good Morning! I'm back from Jamaica. Had a wonderful time. Trying to adjust from 80-90 degrees sunny to 29 degrees and snow. Even harder to get used to is not having a bloody mary and a dip in the pool every morning. :p
