8) If the common people of Rome were called plebeians, what were the aristocracy called?

Hey all. After a couple of glasses of wine, I find myself teary-eyed (no, actually crying) at the thought of leaving the Forums. I LOVE this place. It's where I really learned about SL; how to build, texture, interact, etc. It's where I've made lifelong friendships and companions. It's where a community came together to create something amazing in the Hangout. I'm just so fucking sad that everything we've done is for naught. What's the point anymore?

I said before that I'd stay till the bitter end but I honestly don't think I can do that. It's too painful. So today I bid you all farewell. I'll see you inworld.

I love you all.

Oryx
Change sucks, but it doesn't have to be a "bitter end". The Hangout will still be there, and the Threadies will migrate elsewhere. Then it will all begin again...

Besides, if the forum "closure" is on the same timeline as was fixing the BBcode, we may still be here 2 years from now!

I hope you will at least consider staying in The Thread, but if not... you will be missed. :(

1) Latin expressions often crop up in financial contexts. What does a pro rata salary mean? For the rats. It comes from the time when soldiers were paid in corn. Similarly, salary is derived from cereal.

2) They also occur in crime fiction. What is a modus operandi? And what, strictly speaking, is an alibi? The first is a trendy little musical piece and the second is usually by a road.

3) What do the Girdle of Hippolyta, the Oxen of Geryon and the Apples of the Hesperides have in common? You can only buy them in Walmart Superstores.

4) Who were the Greek gods of the sea and of war? George Clooney and Tom Hanks.

5) What is a Midas touch? And why, in the original story, did it turn out to be a bad thing? It is what all bankers had and still have.

6) The Greek historian Herodotus was so much better than anyone who had gone before that he is considered ‘the father of history’. In the same way other Ancient Greeks are seen as the ‘fathers’ of their particular disciplines. What were the subjects ‘fathered’ by Archimedes, Socrates and Hippocrates? I think the subjects were called Dave, Brian and Vicky.

7) The three classic orders of architecture ranged from the Doric (the oldest and simplest) to the Corinthian (most recent and fanciest). What’s the name of the one in between? The bit between different types of pillars is called the "gap".

8) If the common people of Rome were called plebeians, what were the aristocracy called? Dave, Brian, Vicky etc . . .

9) What are the Capitoline and the Palatine? The Capitoline was the first subway which ran from Athens to its port Piraeus. The Palatine was the dull gold metal middle bit of a Greek trident.

10) What was the name of the escaped gladiator who put together a vast army of slaves and rebelled against Roman rule in about 73 BC? (Clue: Stanley Kubrick made a film about him.) Kirk Douglas.

Whatever bug I'm fighting is killing my neck and shoulders, I'd love to be rubbed any old way at the moment.:(

Thanks Whimsy!

Oh, that chair looks perfect, at least maybe Tex can feel a bit better.

Just to make matters worse:

Spent most of the morning in the doc's and lab's waiting room. Both of which were both filled with old ladies. (Nothing against old ladies, but wait).

So I'm driving home and stop at a fast food joint for a quick snack. The guy behind the counter rings it up and the cash register says $4:10. I look down to count my money and hes says $3.56.

So of course I'm confused. I'm looking at the receipt trying to figure it out when at the bottom I see "Senior Discount".

I wasn't sure if I should thank him or flip him off.

I guess today I must look as bad as I feel. :o :D
