We will not know the end probably as he intended it, but his son and others are at least going to use his notes to finish the series -- though I think they did finally acknowledge that it cannot be done in a single book.

then ... /me cautiously looks forward to it. I was not pleased with Anne McCaffrey's son take on Pern, I did not enjoy the additions by (son?) person who acontirbuted to the Stephen R Donaldson Thomas Covenant series last- I am rather set in my ways! (Although who ever did do some of the the Dune series after Herbert - the House Corrino ones if I recall, did, in my opinion and damn good job.

Brian Herbert did do a good job on Dune.

Todd McCaffery? I haven't read any of his Pern stuff.

Donaldson..I read the Thomas Covenant stuff, but I had a hard time with it. I kept yelling at the pages "I get it..you're a leper. Ok..now stop whining and DO something!" So any of the later books, I left on the shelf. :)

That was kind of the point- he needed to learn to JUST DO IT! Thomas was at first all about sifting the blame- sometimes on to himself other times to others or situations-( like the Health Loam thing at the very beginning). He really needed to get past blame and accept responsibility- cause blame alone won't get you anywhere if you don't do what you can do to fix the problem.

I liked the Covenant series- parts of it still with me to this day- Though his second attempt at serialized writing - A Man Rides Through- was almost self-plagiaristic.

Never read Dune or Pern. Covenant was interesting, but I only was able to get myself to read ~4 of the books. I think first trilogy, and maybe first in second trilogy. If that. I stopped after I realized that I rated each book steadily lower than the one before.

I get dibs on Hilary Duff to play me.
I think I'll go with Rosanne Barr or Peg Bundy -- those attitudes fit me well right now.

I know what Donaldson was trying to do. But I found the character so unsympathetic that I found myself wanting him to fail. Which isn't good for a multi-volume hero.

This I can agree with you- he was such an anti-hero really- and when all is said and done- he didn't really succeed. Definitely a pessimistic bent- I mean, aside from that whole leprosy thing...

Yes, I completely stopped reading the Pern stuff when he son got his hand into the mix. However, I have been fairly pleased with Betancourt's work on the prequel stuff related to Zelazny's Amber series.

I spent my time just wanting to slap the guy all the time -- more so than wanting to slap 90% of the characters in The Wheel of Time.

I'm going to Borders at lunchtime - I read the Amber books twice and didn't know there was more.

Wow- Zelazny- haven't read any in a million years! I remember them (Amber) only vaguely.

Right now I am reading a collection of shorts with Asimov in the title somehow- but i forget if he just collected them or what. I spend more time in world than reading lately. The one I am on atm is called The Trap- by Howard Fast - which coincidently I just found online (I love the internet!) http://www.trussel.com/hf/firstmen.htm

hehe, books, I like books. I'm fast approaching 110 read so far this year. The other night recommending, while brain mush, two series/authors (or was it three?). I still would recommend them.

Jim Butcher's Dresdan (or was that Dresden?) files) and Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series. I never really read urban fantasy until I read Dresdan, and hadn't read shapeshifter until Thompson (Thompson is a werecoyote; Dresdan is a PI in Chicago, the only Wizard PI in the book)

I've become so enamored with books on CD that reading a real book is a chore it seems. i have been working on a book for almost 6 months now, I pick it up and I usually have to back read a bit to get back into it. :(

Brenda- a passing thought cause i am so not going into the Intolernace thread- that last one, wasn't she a part of the Violence Against Women bunch? If so- wouldn't going after the D/s crowd count as persecution? I vote Anarchy! Off with their heads! :D

Yes, but she is quite reasonable in that thread as far as I've seen. So far it's pretty much a good discussion.
