That's a thought...but, I'm coming from the North. ![]() So maybe a spot up there, and take the train down? Hmmm.... Erm...and the cat's out of the bag, "I'm" the person. It's just a solo trip..well a trio. Me, Myself, and I. If I decide to do it that is. Apr 24-26th. Drive/fly. I don't know if it's worth the extra $300 for the ticket. I could drive, pay two days parking, and save that bit of money. Or still pay parking at the airport, and transportation, and stress about catching the return flight on Sunday. Every year, I talk about a trip to NYC, but haven't gone through with it yet. Maybe this time I'll leap. ![]() Jer, if you are driving, depending on which way you take, just get yourself on I 287. It goes right through the center of Jersey, there are hotels and motels and inns and mangers all along it, and it is pretty much on a direct route to your "other" destination. Gimme a hit if you need any local info. _____________________

And I have a freakin all-hands meeting for 2 damn hours today where they get to remind us of our furlough day and tell us probably all the normal crap about needing to work smarter and harder with less, and then they'll try to turn it in to some sort of rah-rah session to attempt the impossible moral boost. I HATE all hands meetings. We always have a 'motivational speaker' who wrote some book or other, (which he diligently tries to sell afterwards). Are you in California, working for the state? Our state workers here have a forced furlough day, weekly. I work for the county, and the state phones trickle down to us on that day. I can't believe I have to answer phones, haven't had to do that in years, blech. Doing my part for the economy and glad I have a job, I guess....... |

Ok...I'm looking for a little advice. If, hypothetically, one were to find oneself with a weekend free. Oh...for the sake of argument, say in late April... And one were to consider visiting NYC for the first time...with the primary intent of catching a show (which one doesn't matter)... what would be a good strategy? Hotel in midtown and walk...further out and take a cab...other...? Which shows are hot right now? This person would probably lean toward something other than a revival or PTO, as those would be familiar to said imaginary traveler. And, since this is purely a thought experiment, suppose this imaginary soul was a 6-7 hour drive from the city. Drive? Commuter flight? Hypothetically speaking of course. ![]() I went to NYC last fall, and stayed in the Financial District, at the Embassy Suites. For that part of the world, it was really reasonable, close enough to 'stuff' (walking distance to the 9/11 memorial) and just a really pretty quaint neighborhood on the harbor. Check it out, anyway......have fun. |

*hugs* dammit! should have titled it "The Thread". we simply MUST start a neverending thread there, even if it's the only thread ever ever used. LOL Just curious, is there a way to 'pull' all the posts over, from this thread? Or would just continue it? Probably stupid question (sorry Pep) but it's early yet..... |

I am so grateful I no longer work for any Government or Corporate entity. Besides all the turmoil right now, all that BS mandatory rah rah and team building nonsense, the"sensitivity training" and other time wasters. Blech. _____________________

Jerboa, I'd recommend staying in the City as opposed to Jersey (sorry Brenda!) It's so much fun to just wake up and wander around downtown, grabbing a bagel or croissant or whatever, for breakfast, and seeing the energy of the place.
Last I was there I stayed in the Comfort Inn on 71st (or was it 72nd?) Ave, just a block away from Central Park. You can wander around the Upper West Side, Columbia and Broadway, etc. Lots of fab eateries/shops there. Museum of Natural History is only 10 blocks away to the north, and anything downtown is easily subway-able or taxi cab-able (take the subway - it's more fun!) Broadway shows are hard to get tickets for unless you buy them now or feel like standing on line for an hour; pick one now and see if you can't get a ticket online. Chicago is excellent. You might also check into hostels (they're not just for young people) for a much cheaper way to go; I think there are some in the heart of downtown, which is pretty cool. Say hello to my sister if you see her. ![]() |

Hypothetically speaking of course. ![]() Jer, being from the area and having worked in NYC for more years than I care to remember at this point, if you need ideas for hotels, let me know. I have a list of boutique hotels that are not overly touristy, and are (usually) more reasonably priced than the larger hotels and much nicer if you ask me. Some are not quite mid-town, might be in the 30's for instance but are still walking distance to the theatre district or a quick subway/bus/taxi ride. Personally, I wouldn't consider staying in NJ at all. The aggravation of getting back into the City isn't worth it, and you really wouldn't be saving much by doing so. The delight of being a tourist here is lost when you're trying to make NJ Transit train schedules back to your hotel in the evening ![]() As far as shows, I know there was one opening which sounded really interesting, God of Carnage with James Gandolfini, Marcia Gay Harden, Jeff Daniels and Hope Davis "What happens when two sets of parents meet up to deal with the unruly behavior of their children? A calm and rational debate between grown-ups about the need to teach kids how to behave properly? Or a hysterical night of name-calling, tantrums and tears before bedtime? " Not your cup of tea? There is any number of musicals still playing, some new (Billy Elliott) some around awhile and worth seeing (Spam-A-Lot, which was fantastic). I think it depends on your personal likes and dislikes, but keep in mind tickets are costly and sometimes difficult to come by so start looking now if you have an exact date in mind. As for me coming here? With a 6 hour difference? I might choose to drive since by the time you get to the airport, wait, delays, land, etc. you could have just driven. Unless you HATE to drive in which case by all means fly lol. Oh, and if you're going to be here and have some time? Feel free to give Ghosty and I a buzz. We're only about a 1/2 train ride out of NYC (in NJ) and would be happy to come in and have a bite with you (and whomever the mystery person is you're meeting with if there is one, *cough cough* ![]() _____________________

I went to NYC last fall, and stayed in the Financial District, at the Embassy Suites. For that part of the world, it was really reasonable, close enough to 'stuff' (walking distance to the 9/11 memorial) and just a really pretty quaint neighborhood on the harbor. Check it out, anyway......have fun. I used to live in Battery Park City, which is part of the district, just outside of it on the water. It's really lovely down there, almost doesn't feel like you're living in NYC at all. The Embassy is a nice hotel. Surprisingly, the Ritz Carlton down there runs pretty good deals on weekends, when all the businessmen are out of town. Depends of course what you think of as a good deal, but I've seen their rates go for as little as about $250 a night, which for NY is fantastic let alone, the Ritz, which sits right on the water. It is a hike to mid-town. You must get on the subway or take a (pricey) cab ride but if you want a different type of atmosphere, I'd recommend it. _____________________

Don't forget that parking's going to be a bitch if you drive.
LaGuardia is right close in to Manhattan, and you can cab/bus from there to downtown. JFK has a very smooth and comfortable AirTrain; for $7 you can catch the AirTrain to the subway connection of your choice, and transfer to the subway, which will take you downtown. It's probably about a 45 minute trip from JFK to Manhattan, which is reasonable. |
