Jerboa, I'd recommend staying in the City as opposed to Jersey (sorry Brenda!) It's so much fun to just wake up and wander around downtown, grabbing a bagel or croissant or whatever, for breakfast, and seeing the energy of the place.

Last I was there I stayed in the Comfort Inn on 71st (or was it 72nd?) Ave, just a block away from Central Park. You can wander around the Upper West Side, Columbia and Broadway, etc. Lots of fab eateries/shops there. Museum of Natural History is only 10 blocks away to the north, and anything downtown is easily subway-able or taxi cab-able (take the subway - it's more fun!)

Broadway shows are hard to get tickets for unless you buy them now or feel like standing on line for an hour; pick one now and see if you can't get a ticket online. Chicago is excellent.

You might also check into hostels (they're not just for young people) for a much cheaper way to go; I think there are some in the heart of downtown, which is pretty cool.

Say hello to my sister if you see her. :p

I am so grateful I no longer work for any Government or Corporate entity. Besides all the turmoil right now, all that BS mandatory rah rah and team building nonsense, the"sensitivity training" and other time wasters. Blech.

Yeah; but the only promotion I am interested in, at this point in my life is early retirement and a golden handshake. Oh, to make it even more interesting, our 'all hands meetings' are mandatory. This is what vacation days are for.

Sounds a fun night out . . . or in?

In fact, don't even go into The City. Go see a show at the Paper Mill Playhouse, and just watch Law and Order.

Yeah! Or, you can RENT "Chicago" for way less than you'd pay for a Broadway seat. Order in some delivery Chinese/Thai/Turkish/Pizza/Burgers/etc, and you've got a lovely NY evening planned.

Don't forget that parking's going to be a bitch if you drive.

LaGuardia is right close in to Manhattan, and you can cab/bus from there to downtown. JFK has a very smooth and comfortable AirTrain; for $7 you can catch the AirTrain to the subway connection of your choice, and transfer to the subway, which will take you downtown. It's probably about a 45 minute trip from JFK to Manhattan, which is reasonable.

There's an idea. Drive to LaGuardia. Use the long term parking there, and then ride into the city.

It's that or pay $50/day for a garage downtown, right? And that's if the hotel has valet.

As far as shows. I actually don't care what I see. A friend who travels to NYC a lot will just head down without tickets, and go to someplace there, some big board? where last minute tickets are sold and just see whatever is available.

Hmm....choices, choices.

@Elora: If I actually do this, and not chicken out, I'll have nothing but time. :)

And the mystery person is me...me!...I was just trying to be cutesy about asking for advice. sheesh!

That's crazy. Then you might as well stay at a hotel in Jersey, park FOR FREE, and just ride into the City. Despite Elora's misgivings :p , the train service into Manhattan is excellent, and not expensive either.

For tickets, you can go to the TKTS booth in Times Square. You will wait in line a long time, and will have to choose from what is available that day, but it isn't a bad way to see a show.

QUOTE]

There is a place in Times Square called "Tickets" where everyone goes early in the morning to get half price tix for whatever Broadway shows still have seats that day. It's literally in the middle of the avenues, smack dab in the middle of traffic lol. You can't miss it since hundreds of people will be there. If you are alone, you'll have a darn good chance of getting a decent ticket to something good I'd bet.

Ghosty and I have nothing but time on the weekends too. I work part-time and usually try and run major errands before the weekend, so coming into the City would be no problem. Let us know if you wind up doing this and want to get together. We've been planning on a trip ourselves and can't seem to get it together yet, so we should be around.

it's definitely a server issue. i put in a support request two days ago and am awaiting the cure. while they always solve my problems, they are usually 3-5 days slower than i prefer. LOL i'll post again when it's allowing new registrars again.

If things don't work out there, I do have a domain where I can install whatever forum software we like and get into the bowels of it ourselves if need be. (It's on DreamHost; I've been there for years and years.)

I'm behind you in your effort, 3Ring. Just saying that if it doesn't work out at that place, there's an alternative. I can give you or whoever telnet (ssh) accounts.

I also have set up an "undying thread" in virtual freebies forum in case we need it on the spur of the moment.
