Sheepbot thread, anyone?

Yes, in my mind, this is the biggest problem with online Gor.

I'll bite - what's a sheepbot? Pretty new to SL still, so not up on all the terms...

Wow, skimming and running out of popcorn indeed. But it was this thread and M&Ms in my case.

I was once randomly flying around and landed where I saw cool buildings. I forget how, maybe land description, I learned it was a Gor sim and something I vaguely remembered from the forums (months ago...) made me think I shouldn't be there so I left. Now that I know that they're visitable and how I've written down what I think is the name of one from earlier in this thread and may check it later today. I hate when I see some cool builds and then don't remember where they were.

The sheepbot is an avatar named Grid Shepherd (there may be and probably are others) created by The Electric Sheep Company to house an automated program that takes it all over the grid gathering information on every object in the SL grid, probably inspired by what Google does with the entire Internet. It seeks out objects - like, say, certain VERY expensive sexually oriented beds - for which the for-sale box is checked, and posts them on a website separate from LL and SL. That enables people aware of this website to tp to the location and buy the object at the quoted price. Problem is, most of the objects it finds are cases where the owner innocently overlooked the for-sale box or did not know it was on, or was using a once-common practice for transferring property to a friend or customer, and the quoted "price" is often therefore a nominal L$1 or L$10. Some people have lost quite valuable items in this fashion - a "sexgen" bed can cost as much as L$12,000. When they protested in these forums, they were furiously attacked by defenders of this sheepbot and blamed for not protecting themselves against this hazard, which at the time they had virtually no way of knowing existed. Meanwhile, probably some 95% or more of the stuff actually for sale in SL is sold through vendor devices which the sheepbot cannot read or determine what the selling prices are, or whether something is being sold there at all. As you might imagine, this sheepbot became very controversial, to say the least, and it has given The Electric Sheep Company, which in other ways is a very competent and effective company building projects in SL and deemed useful to LL in other ways, a very big black eye.

"Bots" are extremely quick and effective programs. They can be put to good or bad uses, but the most commonly encountered uses are ones discovered by people intent on taking advantage of fellow Residents, and so most of the encounters people have with bots are with exploitive ones, sometimes viciously so. See also landbots and the infamous copybot. The makers of these "bots" appear to be utterly irresponsible about the malevolent uses their creations can be put to - when they are not actually the exploiters themselves, in which case they are little better than criminals, IMO.

This sort of thing does make SL interesting, though, does it not?

Ahh, this is the part where people who don't like Gor spam the thread to kill off intelligent discussion. Just like on the old Gor boards. How nostalgic.

Actually, I at least was not really trying to waylay the thread - I think it already covers the Gor phenomenon in the first several pages pretty well for people encountering Gor for the first time and wondering about it. By now, people starting from the beginning have probably pretty well made up their minds whether they want to look further into it. So now, the thread is beginning to wander - and the bot-and-privacy problem is a very big one for SL, IMO.

Bottom line on Gor: It is there for those who want it or are curious about it. And for those who are like the iron bar in the fable that hates the magnet most that attracts it powerfully but is not quite able to overcome the resistance and draw the iron bar to it. Those are the ones attacking it the most, IMO. People who really don't care - guess what? They really don't care - and are probably already forgetting about it.

As am I - except that I have to admit, well-made Gorean slave-girl silks are VERY sexy...O.O

(Side note: When I first got to SL and saw references to "Gorean," I wondered what the hell Al Gore had to do with SL, so you can see how much I knew...Heh.)

(Side side note: I wonder on second thought if maybe Al Gore DOES visit the Gorean sites from time to time - and if so, whether he is a dom or a closet sub? Only Tipper knows for sure...)

I've recently set up a forum where people can discuss adult related SL entertainment free from censorship, or fear of offending puritains.

If you or any other Gorreans contact me, I'd be happy to set up a space on those forums. I could even set permissions so members would have to request access to those boards from me before they post. That way if they cause a problem for you they can easily be locked out.

So I visited a few Gor sims, and did a couple days of reading on the subject and I'm interested in starting to RP. I'd head over to the "How to be a slave thread" (which I read all the way through a while back) but, frankly, I'm not interested in being a slave- just a free woman. After reading the rules and regs for several different Gor sims and spending last night TPing around in my FW outfit with my observer tag on- I'm still pretty nervous about actually dropping the observer tag and getting involved because I'm simply not interested in being collared and I don't see a way to jump into role play as anything *but* a slave without an introduction, escort, or detailed resume with years of experience. Slaves seem to just have to show up in silks and there's lots of folks willing and happy to collar/teach them =/

Since there seem to be a few people active in the community, can one point me towards a sim or two that a new free woman is unlikely to be shot/collared on sight at without an escort or home stone?

do a search for house of Iaomai , i think this may be what you are looking for to start as this is purely an educational sim on gor it is for learning healing etc
