:sighs: Yes - I know it does. I could say the same to you about the way you've been beating everyone over the head too.

I have repeated my point too often. But from my side I feel that my point is delibrately and repetively being ignored, thread after thread.

I know theres not much anyone can do about it. But I dont see how there can be any improvement at all if no one on the other side will even aknowledge its a problem.

well, I did do something like that you know - I said it's a fact of life. I did not mean it to be harsh - it was meant to convey that it's something everyone (hopefully) knows by now. some of us simply don't like being reminded of it.

The original poster felt the weekend's slowdowns and grid problems were cuased by the bringing voice online and thus wanted to the shelve voice for the time being.

Thank you. To the OP: Nah, just dumb monkeys banging on the wrong things.

I thought Colette was handling the boys quite well. I decided to behave for a day or two.

Well yeah, specfically what I wondered was-

"is voice the feature we're all waiting for?"

based on my possibly faulty (but I don't think so) assumption that the breakdowns of the last two days were related to the new voice support code that prompted the last rolling restart

AND

being clueless about the fierce debate about voice that has already been ongoing. I feel kind of bad about creating a tempest in a teapot. I was in a group last night before everything went south, we were all griping about the grid borking and rassenfrassen voice being the rassenfrassen problem, so before I staggered to bed I figured I'd bust my 'new topic' cherry and see what you all thought. WOW. What happens when you talk religion and politics? And I was already spending too much time preoccupied with SL. Okay, back to what you all were doing before I started this mess, I think I have a sense of how people feel about voice ;)

a forum or other such place is a horrible place to go to to understand how a user base feels about any topic in general. The best bet is to watch the reaction in second Life and maybe ask around the differing regions.

Well, if you read the SL press plus this forum, you know that the overall grid borkage is due to a massive hacker attack brought on in protest of the gambling policy ... or maybe a hacker attack for no specific reason .... or maybe the preparation for voice ... or maybe general LL incompetence .... or maybe the underlying Rube Goldberg nature of the grid architecture ... or maybe a curse.

In other words, there's been a lot of speculation and not a lot of real factual information on what the problems have been caused by, at least not that I've seen.

On topic, I think voice is going to be passionately embraced by a minority of SL users, used reluctantly by some, and ignored by most. (Nothing scientific about that, just my instinct.) Corporations and educational institutions are where I think it's going to be most widely used, and I really think that was LL's intent all along.

Hmm, what was that? More inane banter form someone whose sole purpose was to make a bad attempt at a flame and is now simply posting to cause trouble?

Tell it to someone who cares hmm? Or do I have to continually copy and paste the same rebuttal now?

welcome to a public forum - don't want everyone to be able to respond to you? Take it to a PM.

all the rest? I doubt I need to state any of it again doll ... But please, keep responding - you're making me laugh and only locking in that impression of you being nothing more than a trouble maker.

Then there's two of us laughing.

See here's the thing. I have no fears or doubts whatsoever about what I am to the people who know me. Your self proclaimed insight into who I am makes less difference to me than an ant to an elephant. But what I've noticed is this:

You have cried and cried about what I don't have the right to say and whatnot. You have bellyached about me not knowing you as if you know everyone else here to talk about them. You have pretended to know my motives for being here are purely to flame. You have attributed virtually every trait to me that there is that would be characteristic of someone you claim should be a cinch to ignore.

Yet you've responded to each and every one of my posts. Without fail. You never ignored me.

I'm not the ogre you make me out to be. It is funny that I am saying that considering the fact that my words have been only for people who have gone through these threads attributing everyone else's difficult experiences to their own weaknesses and insecurities. I feel free now of the need to do that, and I have you to thank. If you had not shown here, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that you found it as hard to follow your own advice as others have in the past, I would have had few other methods at my disposal with which to make my point.

Thanks for the help.

I hate when I go to music events in SL and realize I just can't understand and/or hear the singer. At least most of the time I can hear the instruments, but even there I sometimes have problems.

That is my experience as a person with limited hearing using something like "voice" in SL - live music events and DJ's. My trouble hearing a lot of what they are saying/singing leaves me with the idea that I just don't want to frustrate myself with "Voice."

(sorry for the snips, trying to somehow make my contributions longer than the quote, and I still failed)

lol
I find the option of being able to increase individual persons' volume helps a lot with me hearing people

I too have a hard time understanding live performances and that is usually due to bad mic or low voice high music

I just gave up trying

Ah, well that's easy. No - since

i) as you've discovered for every person looking forward to voice, there's someone who isn't, so definitely not *all* have been waiting for this

ii) many who need voice or desperately wanted voice, have already been using skype or other alternatives

iii) there are other promised features which people have been waiting for far longer (such as an upgrade to the physics engine), and which can be described as something *all* have been waiting for (e.g. a transaction database behind the asset servers so that random inventory loss does not occur)

I haven't read the whole 38 pages of thread on this one, so I may be repeating the question, but I have noticed that voice is already supported on some sims on the main grid. My question is: how does it work? How can I use voice on the sims where it's available? Do I need to activate a special feature or so? Or do I need to download an ancillary program patch? If so, where is it?

You need to download the Firstlook client from here

http://secondlife.com/community/firstlook.php

A few caveats - the new IM/Chat interface can come as a shock, and there are still some clunky bits of the UI (bottom right popups being obscured by the voice volume controls for instance).

My experience is that this client is more prone to crashing or slowing down than the main one.

That is caused by - among other things - server lag as well as client lag.

Only had that problem twice, both times when going from one very badly lagged server to another, and always when my own machine was running slowly.

Yep ... and lead to a long RL lecture about the origin and why it was being badly implemented by the designer of the vehicle I was on :)

 I don't put people on ignore in a forum no matter how many times they prove their motives to me.

Incidentally? Despite the attempt at being civil in your post? You're still proving that I am right in my impression of you and your reason for even posting and responding.

I've been giving you the chance to prove me wrong - hasn't happened so far.

Try reading the title of the thread. Perhaps you'll understand.

But on the off chance that you won't ....

The only way to get a good idea of how other people feel about Voice in Second Life (or any new feature for that matter) is to observe how many people use said feature AND to ask what they think of it.

If Strife has had the misfortune to follow this thread, he's probably lost the will to live.

On the contrary, the hair talk that gave him a brief glimmer of hope that being a resmod serves some useful purpose.
