Maybe I'm naive, but no, I think you're sincere. And I'd even go so far as to guess that you're trying to improve things here. But:When I first posted on Resident Answers, I adopted a tone that fit that of the most "popular" threads: kinda snide, kinda combative, pretty negative. It seemed like just how things got said around here.

This did a fine job of getting replies. But it was breathtakingly ineffective at getting my point across. Then I remembered the first rule of PR-speak: "Communication has nothing to do with expressing what you mean, and everything to do with getting the audience to do what you want." (Now I'm on a self-administered 12-step Program to Positive Posting. Every day, in every way, etc.)

So I guess, to paraphrase Nika, "Prozac is your friend."

This is all very true. If your aim is to convince people to agree with you, then you need slick PR. Personally though, that's not my aim, but if it were I would pretend to be a bleeding heart liberal with feelings.

I dont think anything posted anywhere on these forums will changed a thing. I simply posted because I was annoyed because on several threads Ive seen today people have whined that it was the wrong forum for the post (as if it matters anyway) or told the person who posted to go and look in slx and not in a friendly helpful way either.

Ive even had people tell me to check slx when Ive stated in my post that Ive been there.

The situation can be summed up thusly; people are stupid.

One thing that I find to be a huge problem with text in general and forums in particular is that you have no "tone" for what was written. So many times people have jumped down someone else's throat over what was actually nothing but a comment that got taken wrong. I'm not saying that there is no snide or negative, but I think the incidence is vastly over-reported by people who apply a "tone" to something that wasn't actually there. The number of people I would apply snide/negative to on this forum is small enough that I can count them on one hand - your mileage may vary :)

I think the people who are "playing moderator" have good intentions. Most of the time they are trying to help the OP in the thread to find the right place to post and also trying to keep the forum they posted on free of contamination.

Some self appointed moderators might be trying to help. However there are an awful lot of people who are the sort of people that spy on their neighbours just incase they are doing something that they might be offended by.

Sorry Maelstrom but I fail to see how recommending SLX as an easy way of finding what you want is a problem. Any more than recommending to people that using Google to find something instead of just going to town and looking in the shop windows anyway.

***edit*** have to agree with Isablan on this ...

thats okay chris you didnt need to demonstrate AGAIN that you can get away with posting any old crap in a thread unscathed ;)

And your question was? 40 odd posts into a rant thread, I will post whatever the hell I please. Thank you for your concern.

It isn't ...its the way some people do it. And if youd said youd looked through slx and someone still insisted you check wouldnt you feel a tad annoyed ?

Telling someone to look in SLX when they have clearly stated that they have already looked there is unhelpful at best.

Concerned ? You could go and prove Isaac Newton right by going and jumping from a very tall building for all I care about you ;)

Forum rules clearly state that only one Sir Isaac Newton metaphor, simile or comparison may be used in a rolling 24 hour period. I used on approximately 51 minutes ago in the "Crying because Cory Linden has left" thread. Please edit your post accordingly.

Well you see, I doubt VERY much that *I* am the person referred to here since personally I work in Customer Service Quality Assessment and therefore I *READ* and understand people rather than just post for the hell of it.

Yes I would Maelstrom, if it was happening repeatedly and in a "god don't you know anything" way. I can only speak from my perspective which is that I recommend it as a time saver ... I know you didn't mean this to me personally and that I am not the one you were complaining about since I've not really posted much today.

Maybe I should alter it by asking him to prove Darwin right by evolving a tad more....

Get out the guillotine, somebody didn't read one of the OPs posts very carefully and accidently recommended something he'd already tried!!

That would be acceptable within forum rules (although it should be pointed out that Darwin's theories on evolution are subtley different from those held by most paleontologists and biologists today and were infact more akin to Lamarckist Transmformationalism - views also held by the poet Erasmus Darwin, Charles' grandfather.)

I dont know who posted it cherry ...I wouldnt have made my complaint if I hadnt seen it several times. But some people simply come over with an attitude that its their forum and woe betide anyone who asks something they dont like...Im convinced theres a certain group here which sets out to rubbish certain posters, or certain ideas and they seem to be able to evade moderation doing it... Im not posting for the hell of it if I did I wouldnt make non controversial posts on a wide variety of subjects.

If a post really needs to be moved then its surely up to a mod to do it.

If people can gripe about things being in the wrong forum I can gripe about em doing it. The fact I was criticised previously had nothing to do with this post if it had Id have posted then not now... :D believe me I do not hold back :p
