For Ubuntu Dapper Drake (6.06) On Athlon 64X2, does anyone else get total system freeze upts resulting in no logs from the event due to the complete nature of the freeze? This even occurs on a fresh install.
Noted the changes to make it run are adding 32bit libuuid.so.1 and libdb-4.2.so
Anyone else able to catch/prevent this? Anyone having this happen?

glibc double-free errors being caught by libsafe?
07-04-2006 22:48
Hello, something of interest. I upgraded for Fedora Core 5, latest available kernel etc. SecondLife 1.10.5.x ran just fine yesterday.
Today, I had some crashing on my Fedora Core 5 box related to a glibc double-free error. SecondLife starts, but the screen stays black, and the window is unkillable unless you suspend the process and kill it manually.
The error looks like this: 2006-07-05T05:44:05Z INFO: GL_VENDOR NVIDIA Corporation 2006-07-05T05:44:05Z GL_RENDERER GeForce 6600/AGP/SSE2 2006-07-05T05:44:05Z GL_VERSION 2.0.2 NVIDIA 87.62 2006-07-05T05:44:05Z *** glibc detected *** bin/secondlife-bin: double free or corruption (!prev): 0x0bcd5708 ***
I may have tracked it down.
They may be caused by the Avaya Research Labs program called libsafe. It is installed from source or RPM from Avaya Research Labs or from the version included as a Fedora Core 4 extra. Libsafe runs on other major flavors of Linux as well, so this really isn't a Fedora specific issue.
If you get glibc double-free errors, check the /etc/ld.so.preload file to see if it has something with /usr/lib/libsafe listed.
If so, backup the /etc/ld.so.preload file and try removing the libsafe line from that file.
That fixed my crashes, and I have run SL for hours without a problem since.
I reinstalled libsafe, and SL began crashing again instantly.
Thought I would share, because it is a crashy problem that annoys me. Apparently some versions of SL Linux Alpha will run with libsafe okay. Some don't.

Libsafe protects against buffer overflow attacks. I don't think Ubuntu even packages that, though either way I don't have it. This problem has existed for quite a while at least for me perhaps I am alone in this for now. The nature of the crash is a total system freeze up with no error messages. For a while I thought it was hardware based but testing has reduced that possiblity. A complete install with nothing but what is needed for SL to run has been done. FC5 is downloading at the time to test it on there as well. GDB is unable to grab anything as well, due to the system freezing. Ubuntu also releases their next Alpha release (Knot) on the 13th I think.
*EDIT* It appears the nvidia driver was not SMP clean. So those running dual core and what not may have a problem if the driver is run in SMP mode. This is currently a fairly educated guess as running the driver in single core mode stops the crashing.

I just heard about SL and am having trouble starting it. Here is your error message that I remember seeing myself: 2006-07-11T01:14:43Z WARNING: Unable to create window, be sure screen is set at 32-bit color in Control Panels->Display->Settings Thanks to other posts in these forums, here are the steps that fixed that error for me: You may need to add this line to the 'Section "Screen"' part of /etc/X11/xorg.conf Become root, make a backup copy of your existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then add this line right after the "Monitor" line in your "Screen" section: DefaultFbBPP 32 Restart your GUI (sometimes, just CTRL-ALT-BKSP will do it). If that does not work, restore your backed up xorg.conf. Do not make further changes, first backout one change at a time, reset back to a known good configuration, then try something else. Here is a snippet of my xorg.conf to look at as a reference. Do *not* cut and paste this into your file Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "PNY GeForce 6600" Monitor "Dell 2405FPW" DefaultColorDepth 24 DefaultDepth 24 DefaultFbBPP 32
The idea is to trick SL into thinking its a 32-bit display. I hope this helps.

returned objects for no reason
07-13-2006 21:51
We had about 29 objects return to inventory for no apparent reason at SHINDA 245, 180, 27
(see gaping holes)
Very unusual for this to happen. No objects were overhanging at all. Objects from multiple users - they were not returned by the land owner, who did not log on today at all.
Neighbor reports returning a "tent" from his land earlier today, but doesn't match time of object return which was about 5:15 PM SLT/PST 7-13-06.
Please take a look as this could be a very damaging issue to builds.
thanks Aegif p.s. I don't see any other bug forum, it's not Linux client so please move to appropriate forum if necessary.

You are right, not a Linux Issue. A proper Bug Report in world would help, especially if it comes from several people. You could also post in in the general thread, or hotline to linden.
Having said that, strangely enough I have the exact same thing happening - one object is regularly returned to me. It may be gone in 1.10.6, though. Since it seems to be happening to others too, I will file a bug report next time it happens.

Theora Aquitaine originally pointed this out in a separate thread, but it appears you can't leave groups in the new version 1.11.0(9).

At 13 pages this thread is getting a bit unwieldy. its hard for someone to know if the bug they're experiencing is reported, if there is a workaround, etc.
You might consider running some sort of bug tracking software, like bugzilla or something to that effect that is easily searchable and listable.
Titles are still displayed twice It crashed while taking a screenshot
Two I noticed in the 5 minutes I had it running in Linux

I suppose we could "community bug track" and just update the bug list when we find that things are fixed. Any takers on setting one up? You must download this update to use the system
08-24-2006 16:31
This may sound obvious, but this automatic download doesn't work for me on SuSe Linux. This really is a very poor show - fancy not being able to cut & paste on Linux. All the Linux users have gone on to me for years about how wonderful Linux is, so I thought I'll throw myself in at the deep end, and converted to Linux. I'm either going to have to give up Linux or Second Life if they don't fix it soon. Come on Linden Labs - buck your ideas up!!!

I'm either going to have to give up Linux or Second Life if they don't fix it soon. Come on Linden Labs - buck your ideas up!!! As I understand it, Linden Labs is not doing the Linux port. They got so tired of my SL under Wine crash reports that they farmed out the development to Icculus.org (sp?). Linux is wonderful, especially now that I can run the SL client without Wine or Cedega. To upgrade, I: 1. click a bookmark in my browser to go to the alpha download site 2. download the alpha as a BZ2 3. move my current SecondLife dir to SecondLife-old 4. explode the BZ2 5. rename the SecondLife_blah_blah dir to just SecondLife 6. cp SecondLife-old/SecondLife/user_settings/settings.ini to the same dir in the new SL 7. run my handy "secondlife" command script that looks like this: #!/bin/sh ( cd $HOME/SecondLife/; LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:./lib" ./secondlife ${1:+-url} $@ >/dev/null 2>&1 & )
8. Enjoy SL in a Windows-free world. Yes, I miss cut and paste, the use of the ALT key, snapshots, audio (sometimes), and such, but I don't miss having the AVscan every byte that goes through my computer with 5 separate programs, then spend all night defragging all the viruses that still go undetected, etc. Its more steps, less convenient, etc... but that's part of the cost I am more than willing to pay to remain free of the favorite OS of the Pinks and other Conspiracy Dupes.

Darwin specific problem with filename
08-26-2006 21:30
When untarballing the package in Darwin, file secondlife will cause conflict with directory SecondLife (perhaps due to some Darwin-specific mechanism that allows files to be named non-case-sensitive in the GUI or in the "Classic Environment" and will cause the file secondlife to disappear (I tried another way, I do not remember how) or turn into file secondlife.1 (with dot-1 at the end). Some user may find it difficult or not possible to change filename secondlife.1 to secondlife (may return error message file/directory already exists).

A few bugs
08-27-2006 04:37
I've only been on SL for a couple days, but I have noticed a few bugs. My apologies if some/all of these have already been mentioned.
-Crash while trying to take snapshots -Crash when toggling fullscreen -Upload does not work -Some keys (mostly having to do with object manipulation, that I've noticed) follow the bindings in my WM rather than the bindings in SL -I seem to loose my connection to the server an aweful lot and seemingly at random, despite having a high bandwidth and the fact that my room mate (who uses Windoze and has his computer hooked into a slower hub the rest of the network) doesn't have these problems.
I may find more in the form of things I don't realize should be there if I ever get around to installing the Windoze version in Wine, but I assume any bugs of that nature would already be known.

Great Idea!
08-29-2006 00:17
Great Idea - when we get different releases of the Linux Client. So far, the general viewer problems in the windows client are also present in the linux client The main push in THIS forum is to get the linux specific bugs visible and squashed However, since the linux client has had virtually no changes since day one, the version specific problems tend to be limited - aside from the snapshot issue with libjpeg.so as supplied by LL. That one is new. I will be the VERY FIRST to start a thread on each new linux client that has linux specific changes in it, and I think that is a WONDERFUL idea - but not as long as we have basically the same client as from day one, as regards linux functionality. What would also be interesting, is that Wine Users could start threads with their wine versions listed, so we can also trace what progress is being made there

I've been learning scripting, and quite frankly the lack of cut and paste is a total killer for me. It makes working with scripts unbelievably painful and laborious. I'd run it under Wine if I could, but I couldn't get it to work.

Me too, I tried to install SL under Wine, Cedega and Crossoffice, no success, so I had to install an alternative version in my windows partition. Linux version is working well tho some buggies, no screenshot and cut n paste n sound

Linux version is working well tho some buggies, no screenshot and cut n paste n sound Sound should be OK with the Very New Fantastic Super Duper High Performance WhoopdeDoo Linux Alpha from yesterday Snapshots may be the old problem of the LL supplied libjpeg.so - check the forum for solutions Cut and Paste is DEFINITELY the Big Push to get the Linux Client to Beta

I run SL on a quota-limited university account. I have to erase the previous version before installing the next one. I just D/Led 1.12.0.51742, and upon starting it, got the following error: From: someone bin/secondlife-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libxmlrpc.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory what can I do to fix this? I cant go back to the previous version, that was erased

try this: cd into your SecondLife directory run this: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:./lib ./secondlife Hopefully that helps. I use this script in my own personal bin directory to start secondlife: #!/bin/sh ( cd $HOME/SecondLife/; LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:./lib" ./secondlife ${1:+-url} $@ >/dev/null 2>&1 & )
When I upgrade SL, I have to rename the dir to just SecondLife for this script to work The ${1:+-url} stuff is from a tip elsewhere in this forum to help get SL to run when you click secondlife://server/x/y/z links in your browser.
