From: Angel Sunset It's a feature.... SL takes all the cpu it can get, to improve your playing experience. If its not loading textures or whatever, this cpu power goes into responsiveness. However, in linux at least, this has never delayed other programs for me, like web browsing or whatever. I would personally think SL was not well written, if I got low frame rates and cpu was not being used Hi, Thanks for the informative response. I can breathe a sigh of relief knowing it is a feature. No, in general it does not delay other linux applications except for one. I was trying to take movies using gvidcap since the in-app movie does not work yet. Was trying to chronicle a bit of my newbie experiences on SL, since I am a first time user of SL and my first time use being with the linux client. It unfortunately drops the capture frame rate and the SL frame rate to a very low value (less than a frame every 4 or 5 seconds at times) producing not very useable movies. Yes, I can take screenshots at will using a program such as xwd. Maybe I need more memory, dunno. Oh well, would be nice to chronicle my newbie linux journey with video on SL, but doesn't look like it will happen. Anyhow, other than that, I am mainly experiencing bugs that seem generally reported, like the crashing in going from fullscreen back to windowed mode. Beyond that though, I am finding SL fairly easy to get on to. I found the public sandbox and then from there went to the extended newbie tutorial and learned some very neat basic information about opening boxes and using their contents, basic building lessons, and more. Very nicely done SL for the newbies. Edit: I threw together a little script where I use xwd to do sequential grabs of the Second Life window and have been able to make 5 fps video from them using gimp-gap. Not great frame rates, but I'll take it for now unless I can figure out something even better.

Though I haven't tried it under Linux, under Windows 512 MB was borderline for SL. I was only really happy with SL with 1024 MB. But that may be because I always have opera open in the background, with at least 8 tabs active. I have noticed, that other graphics intensive programs (even big animated Gifs on Opera tabs) slow my framerate, and I presume that is the limited graphics power I have. So does having RealPlayer running - sound processing seems to be a heavy drain, too. AT Live Events, I copy the url of the DJ's site to RealPlayer, and get the music in Linux More memory wouldn't hurt, in other words, but may not fix your "jitter"

It was lagged to crap, but it *did* run... Now I bet that same hardware in Linux would run faster. Just a hunch

Possible new bug:
When in "about land", if I try to return objects, the game crashes... not sure if this is reproducible, since I don't want to arbitrarily return objects.

I think it was something like -ms <msec> would cause a CPU rest for the given amount of milliseconds, and potentially lower CPU usage. If you're having trouble with certain apps not getting enough CPU time with SL running, try using that with low numbers (eg. 1 or 5 or something).

I've got the same thing. Happens if I try and return objects to myself as well, which could be helpful for bug reproduction.

Though I wouldn't use it (my framerate is so poor, I won't even mention what it is - weak computer components ), the parameter as far as I can see is "-yield <ms>": yield some idle time to local host (changed from -cooperative), where <ms> is the value in milliseconds, apparently. Whether this is ms / second, or what, is not mentioned. I guess thats something you have to try out. Reference: http://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=newview. Presumably the parameter goes directly after the "secondlife.bin" in the "secondlife script. However, I would say renicing the secondlife.bin process may be more flexible, and useful.

Texture transparency b0rken
03-29-2006 08:49
I have this same issue running the Windows client in WINE, so I suspect it has to do with the video RAM detection issue, but - alpha blending and transparency don't seem to work at all. At best, the result is that transparent textures are opaque instead. At worst, blotchy fugly patterns also appear. Oddly, sometimes others seem to see the same oddness I'm seeing. When not using a full-body tattoo skin, the face also has an odd color and a beard (male or female). Mostly cosmetic issues - otherwise, no major issues.
My configuration: Distro: Gentoo Linux 2006.0 Desktop: XFCE 4.2.2 (Also tried KDE 3.4, same result) Linux 2.6.15.4 Xorg 6.8.0 nVidia accelerated driver 84.21 2x nVidia GeForce 7800GT 256MB, in non-SLI rendering mode (driving 2 monitors) 2x AMD Opteron 250, 1024kb L2 cache, 128k L1 cache 4096MB physical RAM, 8192MB virtual. I am currently experiencing this issue as well - although interestingly enough, it was working (with some issues) before my latest system update. Mine is just slightly different than yours. Complete lock up!
05-01-2006 23:22
When trying to play Slingo, first my mouse locked up then I the quit command froze everything! I had to anilate the window. Everything in Linux seems to work ok. It was just the Linux SL alpha version that locked up. I am running Ultima Linux version 8 sp1 which is based on slackware.

Are you running any other intense OpenGL apps? Any other games? If they lock up like this too, I'd guess it's something in your 3d drivers...

edit: the problem was a driver issue, I fixed it by changing various options.
It crashes 30-60 seconds after I start it. I use Ubuntu Dapper 64bit. It flashes a lot and there is a large amount of artifacts before it crashes. It behaves the same with both the 64bit gl drivers, and if I copy 32bit gl libraries in the SL lib directory.

Kubuntu (KDE and Ubuntu) Runs flawlessly
05-06-2006 12:16
With the minor exceptions of a the well known issues, SL installed and is running flawlessly on my Kubuntu Linux system. Had nothing special to do at all. Downloaded, unpacked, ran the install script and then ran the game.
Lack of sound doesn't bother me very much, niether does playing windowed. The incorrect video memory is no issue really either. The graphics are sharper and faster on Kubuntu than on Windows. I really really really miss using the "alt" key for camera control and I miss walking with the "W" key. Otherwise, I'm not booting to Windoze for SL anymore.
-Ta H.
Stats: AMD 2200+ Processor 1 Gig or ram NVidia 5500 video card with 1 gig of ramn. Of course Kubuntu current

More of a tip I guess for full screen SL
05-12-2006 13:21
This is not really a bug, but more of a workaround for the full screen option not working.
In Ubuntu (YMMV), you can login using the failsafe terminal (not the failsafe gnome), and then nav to your SL folder and run the client in full screen (no borders etc), after setting the correct resolution in the client prior to login.
On the sound front.. It would seem to me that they would want to use OpenAL for the sound since it's all setup for spatialized sound... Seems a perfect fit.

From: Angel Sunset I have a similar issue too... can you let us in on the "various options"? It was an issue with nvidia drivers and xorg, if this doesn't work you can look at the nvidia linux forums. I added to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, under the device section: Option "DPMS" "true" Option "NvAGP" "1" Then I disabled acpi in the bootloader menu, since I'm using grub that's /boot/grub/menu.lst, where to the line starting with "kernel /boot/vmlinuz " I added: pci=noacpi

Thanks! I will try that I have seen a related problem on the NVidia forums, but so far aside from a lot of kind remarks, no direct solutions found, but then, some of the threads go back to 2004 and are so full of cross-topics I will update this post with my results.

If its closed source it should stay that way.
05-13-2006 13:23
I've seen on this forum that some open source proponents feel the need to open source this product. I couldn't disagree more. I don't see how that is necessary. It would be nice to see a company create a product that is closed source on the Linux platform. It would be a good demonstration that commercial software companies can support Open Source without having to open source their work themselves. It should be the developers choice to open source. It shouldn't be dictated by the community.
As for this project... Has Linden labs looked into the Hal subsystem in Linux to get the rest working? This could be a way to get hardware detection working properly in Linux by detecting the hardware using the hal interface. That way you can detect the sound card settings and the configuration settings for the system properly. It could be beneficial to the Linux client.

HAL sounds like a great idea!
Any details on that for the uninitiated? How it would specifically be implemented here?
I am ALL in favour of SL being separated from the hw by a HAL; it helps keep a standard client, and a platform dependent part, separate from each other.
As for open sourcing: I think the only pragmatic plus that was perceived, is to make more resources available to SL to get the client 100% (excpt for a few who had ideological reasons).

From: Elishia Winnfield It would be nice to see a company create a product that is closed source on the Linux platform. It would be a good demonstration that commercial software companies can support Open Source without having to open source their work themselves. Hasn't this already been done many times over? Here's a few examples: Games: Everything from Id (Doom*, Quake*), the UT series, Savage & Savage 2, Neverwinter Nights Non-games: SL, Maya Lightwave, Maple, TeamSpeak (I think?), the Java runtime & development environments From: someone It should be the developers choice to open source. It shouldn't be dictated by the community. Agreed! Personally, I'd like to see the SL network protocol opened. If it's robust, it should be fairly impervious to abuse (well, it's going to be as vulnerable open as it is closed, right?) and could allow some fairly innovative features. Here's one of many possibilities: An SL IM client that logs you in & TPs you to your home, then simply relays IMs and local chat. We could add this functionality to gaim, and you could just do an SL chat log in. Good for hopping in to talk from machines that can't run the full game. Note: this is off-topic for this thread. If we're going to have yet another open-sourcing discussion, we should probably make a new thread for it. We're definitely not talking about a known bug anymore

Lockups in X
05-20-2006 14:54
I had occasional lockups in X using fvwm, and KDE would not even start properly. It turns out that my hardware / Linux combination had a "speed" problem. Recompiling the nvidia driver after changing the speed in the driver source to AGP 4x, and so on (in the README, section F I think), and recompiling it, the problem is gone completely. That's what I get for putting a Very Fast Card on a last generation Motherboard
