Setting login to home base and trying to login again gave this error. The only thing I was wondering was when this problem occurs does this bring the sim down. Usually when I try to relog at the same place right after I get the "this sim has started the shutdown process..." or something like that. The previous client was much more stable. It now crashes within a couple of seconds of logging in. Hopefully this client will be fixed quickly. The only thing I was wondering was when this problem occurs does this bring the sim down. Usually when I try to relog at the same place right after I get the "this sim has started the shutdown process..." or something like that. If that is the case I guess we should not insist and log in somewhere else. I hope this is not the case ! This is just saying that SL takes a while to completely log you off... After a minute or so, you ARE completely logged off, then you can log back in. From: Angel Sunset This is just saying that SL takes a while to completely log you off... After a minute or so, you ARE completely logged off, then you can log back in. The sim is ok

So I used the windows client to put my AV in an empty sim and naked in case one object was messing up. I managed to log in this way. Does anybody know which object causes the failure to log in ?

Incidently there are lots of octree errors/warnings but they do not seem to be the cause of the crash. After a while there is a warning about so many octree errors. Lowering network bandwidth seems to reduce the number of segmentation faults and increase the time the client runs so that graphics being to load before the segfault is reported. This has been the only crash causing report the debugger has caught. Ignoring graphical flaws for now. Debug version with symbols would help.

Try reducing the bandwith on the network tab, 250 to 300. Moving over sims boundaries seems to wig things out so islands are safer than the mainland. It's not so much a rendering bug but a communication bug, the octree was a noisy bug that happens when networking starts to go south, this is the running hypothesis. LL should look at the afore posted info and see if it is so. There are a few other running threads on this idea now.

Moving over sims boundaries seems to wig things out so islands are safer than the mainland. It's not so much a rendering bug but a communication bug, the octree was a noisy bug that happens when networking starts to go south, this is the running hypothesis. LL should look at the afore posted info and see if it is so. There are a few other running threads on this idea now. Exacly on what do you base its a network problem? When there are lots of object updates comming in, one seems more likely to crash. So when moving quickly and such. Being anywhere near a sim border also seems to increase network activity, which includes just looking across it. More often then not the crash is actually occuring in the LLSpatialGroup object, it appears that there is a bad pointer being referenced which triggers a SIGSEGV. The theory on why the network reduction appears to help sort of goes like this. The SL client is a multithreaded application. When dealing with threading it is very important to make certain that data you are modifying is properly locked if it is going to be accessed by more then one thread at a time. In our case we are seeing a good deal of objects in the octal tree that have bad data, pressumably this is because another thread ganked the data out from under it. The likely culprit, or at least the one that seems to make the most sense w/out knowing more about how the system works is that there is a dedicated network thread that is handling updating information about object location from the server side, and another thread is handling the octal tree in order to do occlusion of the objects. If the object data, or the tree, are improperly locked, it is possible to gank an object from the tree via one thread that another thread was using and trigger an invalid pointer. A way to "test" that theory is to reduce how often the networking code is reaching into the octal tree to tweak objects. So reducing the network bandwidth should, in theory, help out in dealing with race conditions that can trigger the tree corruption. Mind you, I rarely crash unless I am trying to crash the client. So other then the fact that I walk everywhere I go in order to avoid massive object thrashing, and avoid sim boundries, which are known to increase the network load, and I have very little problems in the way of crashing. Other then that we only have the gdb backtraces and the disassembled binaries to base our assumptions on. Hope the info helps.

I was actually able to log in using the client for the first time tonight, and the performance compared to WINE was night and day. However, I can no longer log in. Methinks this is an incarnation of the fabled "octree" bug. This occurs every time I try to log in, about 60% of the way through "precaching." I'm running Gentoo latest, with a P4 3.0Ghz, 512MB RAM, nVidia FX 5800 256MB VRAM. Oh, and this was after I throttled network bandwidth down as far as 50Kbps, the minimum allowed.

Crossing boundaries between simulators triggers it more often than not, also teleporting into the mainland or any sim with other sims adjacent will cause this to be triggered. It reportedly is fixed in the next release. Since this is the last post and it is on my paws. I am leaving a tickmark. Posts for bugs in 1.10.2(2) after here.
