I'm also experiencing very slow frame rates in the latest client. something like 3-5fps while in Ahern/welcome area - I'm able to convince it to get up to 15-20-ish while in a low-number-of-textures area... i'm running SuSE 9.1, Xorg 6.8.2 with the latest nvidia drivers (817 . uname -a: Linux mordor 2.6.10 #1 Thu Mar 3 00:36:16 CST 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux xdpyinfo: vendor string: The X.Org Foundation vendor release number: 60802000 glxinfo: direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation server glx version string: 1.3 client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation client glx version string: 1.3 OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X/AGP/3DNOW! OpenGL version string: 1.5.5 NVIDIA 81.78 It's (apparently) a GeForce4 MX 440, with 128MB of ram. I have made the settings.ini change to set the amount of memory in the SL client. /proc/cpuinfo: vendor_id : AuthenticAMD model name : AMD Athlon(tm) Processor cpu MHz : 1004.504 cache size : 256 KB Mem: 515964k total, 465228k used, 50736k free, 21052k buffers Swap: 522104k total, 33628k used, 488476k free, 259908k cached (the above numbers are w/o the SL client running) Mem: 515964k total, 503908k used, 12056k free, 21036k buffers Swap: 522104k total, 35992k used, 486112k free, 122852k cached .. these are with the client running. (It's worth noting when I run stuff like bzflag, I get 100+ fps... So I know that (at least some) of the GLX/AGP stuff is working properly.... - d.

Windowed client lose focus -> Build mode activated
03-01-2006 00:16
Hi! First off, great work on the Linux client! It's working really well most of the time, and I'm glad I can finally play Second Life! On to my bug I run Second Life in 1024x768 Windowed mode. My Desktop is 1280x1024. When I click outside the SL client window, and it loses focus, the client always switches into "Build" mode (Build button gets highlighted). Maybe someone of you already noticed. If this post is a duplicate, my apolofgies - feel free to delete. Many thanks for Second Life on Linux!

Check if vou have the folder /home/vinci/Desktop/Ablage/SecondLife-linux-02072006/SecondLife/cache/ and if you have read/write access to it. If the folder is there, try renaming it and create a fresh one.

Vinci, likely you didn't decompress the archive correctly: /263/ab/90124/1.htmlUsing file-roller for me seems to leave out empty directories that are necessary. If in doubt drop to the command line.

What does this mean. Is this a problem of graphics card setup or should I not bother?

Hi Vinci, look at the following thread. It seems to solve this for everyone I know of... including me /263/55/87804/1.html

 ya think
03-12-2006 23:03
Ya I kinda figured bad packets... was happening... but Id like to know what would cause it concidering the windows client on the exact same machine (grub bootloader I believe) in windows xp has never shown any red in the packet indicator..... Ive never had any problem downloading with either windows or linux and I use them both regularly .... I thought it would be kinda neat to get Sl running in linux...... if I could Id probably finally get windows off my system.... never had any security problems with any of my 3 linux systems..... but gaming I always seem to have to come back to windows..... there apparently is a wine off shoot ... cant remember what it is called now though .... maybe Ill try to find it again and try that ..... yes I know its packets causing my packet indicator to go red .. somethign more constructive like why might be helpful though

I don't have any answers on this; maybe a low-level Linux Expert can say something about it; but I have noticed the following: a) Sometimes when I connect to Second Life, my bandwidth goes up to 1.5 Mbps and stays there a while, although my bandwidth is actually set to 1Mbps. Windows never comes NEAR 1 Mbps, normally maxes out at about 300Kbps - this REALLY tests line quality; b) I get times when I get bad packets by the million - 250% has been seen (whatever 250% means). It sometimes helps to relog; most times, it helps if I try a day later Windows may be "optimizing" the packet transfer, by forcing a "sequential" download of packets; this would limit both the bandwidth, and prevent the bad packet level reaching these stellar values. PS: On a bad packet day, what I get in Windows is not a high level of bad packets; instead, I get LOTS of textures that just never load, and a moderate level of bad packets, and a bandwidth of 30 Kbits, though lots of stuff SHOULD be loading; the missing textures stay grey. In this regard, again, I think the effective time to get a playable SL in terms of completed packets received, Linux has the edge again. But this is subjective. In other words, even WITH the bad packets display in Linux, which Windows does not show, Linux completes its download a whole lot faster than Windows does. Windows just hangs up its packet transfer before the Bad Packet display flips out. Again, I repeat, this is just what I feel... I have noticed, though, that on a bad packets day, whole objects can go missing in the SL Linux client, and only materialize after a relog. So don't hurry to rebuild your house if a wall is missing, and you had tons of bad packets, it MAY fix itself after a relog. This is also the reason I think the above problem may be related to bad packets.

From: Ember Trilam The program is called Cedega by Transgaming. Cedega are not very nice when it comes to contributing back to the wine project, and I believe Wine is pretty much as capable as Cedega for all but the very latest games (SL looks to be somewhat comparable between the two). Relevant URLs: Wine: http://www.winehq.orgCedega: http://www.transgaming.comOf course it's far more helpful to use the Alpha and bug-report away

From: Angel Sunset Windows may be "optimizing" the packet transfer, by forcing a "sequential" download of packets; this would limit both the bandwidth, and prevent the bad packet level reaching these stellar values. I'm not sure any sort of sequential download would make sense, since TCP doesn't really allow for that sort of thing. Packets get sent in order, but they can arrive in any order. I'm fairly certain there's no way to prevent this behavior except to wait until an ACK for the previous packet before sending the next one, and that would only slow your connection, I believe. Thoughts?

Nothing really to add, but it did seem to me that SL under Windows does not get the HUGE bad packet values that Linux does, and also does not get the massive transfer rates.
"Sequential" is a poor way of describing the feeling I get, since it is too exact.
Maybe the Windows TCP/IP stack gets full? I can't say what it is, but it DOES appear that Windows "chokes" when it gets bad packets, so the Bad Packet indicator clears quickly.... and the used bandwidth stays really low for ages, without the missing details in the client being downloaded.
Whatever, on a bad packet day, I get Really Low Bandwidth on the Windows client, that just never gets better for ages. Linux seems to Go for Max all the time, and as soon as it has recovered from bad packets, pushes its bandwidth up again - often resulting a another Red Bar, and Bad Packets going up.
Last night I again had bandwidth usage of 1500 Kbps, but the line was good, No Bad Packets DESPITE the bandwidth! Result: within a few seconds, everything was visible (as Linux knows visible...), despite starting with an empty cache (as usual).
I haven't seen this kind of download rate in Windows, ever.
IMHO, it is caused not by a bad line in Linux that Windows doesn't have, but in the different ways Linux and Windows handle a bad line.

Mermory Leaks Like Crazy
03-15-2006 14:06
After I've been inworld for a while, exploring a lot, my system starts swapping more than a bittorrent junkie on speed Note that this is after modifying settings.ini to enable all 128mb of video memory (though it may have been a problem beforehand). Distro: Debian Etch Desktop Environment: N/A Kernel: 2.4.25 X version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4 Video Driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178 Video Card: GeForce 6200 128mb CPU: AMD XP 1500+ w/ 256KB cache Mem: 256572k total, 77072k used, 179500k free, 7440k buffers Swap: 1000936k total, 0k used, 1000936k free, 36232k cached The above memory setting above reflect a virgin boot, btw. Quitting out and restarting SL makes SL run fast again.

Yep, this bug has been there ever since I used the Linux client the first time (1.8.4.16). Most likely a string variable doesn't get cleared inside a loop. The bug has been reported to Don.

In the appearance editor, I just noticed some graphical artifacts appearing on the borders around the preview icons. I didn't see this in the last version, either...

High CPU Useage
03-25-2006 09:03
Maybe this is not a bug but just part of running the linux SL client, but secondlife-bin cpu useage is always in the 99% range when I am connected to SL, whether it be 10 minutes or 1 hour.
System Specs: gentoo 2006.0 fluxbox 0.9.12 kernel 2.6.14.2 X version - X.Org Foundation 6.9.0, revision r1-0.5 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Series Generic OpenGL version string: 2.0.5695 (8.23.7) using ati-drivers but have also used mesa-cvs successfully (still high cpu use) cpu - athlon xp 2200+ (1.8 Ghz) 512 MB ram

It's a feature.... SL takes all the cpu it can get, to improve your playing experience. If its not loading textures or whatever, this cpu power goes into responsiveness. However, in linux at least, this has never delayed other programs for me, like web browsing or whatever. I would personally think SL was not well written, if I got low frame rates and cpu was not being used
