It's the same, 24 or 32, which as I understood is really the same anyway. SL doesn't start with either setting.

I'm using what's current in Debian unstable, the binaries, yes.

The client seems to have issues with X.org 7, as I see others have been fine with 6.8.2. This is on Debian unstable. It always reports that I don't have 32 bit color available, yet it is set to 32 (or 24, both work the same).

2006-10-24T03:17:49Z WARNING: LLWindowManager::create() : Error creating window.
2006-10-24T03:17:49Z WARNING: Unable to create window, be sure screen is set at 32-bit color in Control Panels->Display->Settings
(and exits)

both DefaultDepth and Depth are set in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to 32 currently.

Do I need to change some other setting? Thanks!

SL seems to throw that error no matter what the actual error was. Check that you have direct rendering enabled? Command for reference:

% glxinfo | grep direct

upgrade to 1.12.3.4 not working at all
10-25-2006 14:56
Hi,

I had no problems running on GNU/Linux with 12.2.2.9 - sound working, okay textures - but suddenly everything stopped working after I downloaded 1.12.3.4 client. I don't know how to transfer my settings from the old client installation, so I just unpacked and ran the new client in a fresh directory. I got a login box, then the client successfully connects to SL, downloads cache texture, asks me about streaming music, even starts playing some music, and then exits without error messages. Any help will be appreciated.

Here's the last part of the console output: (sorry about the long text - will edit if this is not helpful)

DSO mis-match on Gentoo
10-25-2006 16:21
On an up-to-date Gentoo installation, the latest (1.12.3.4) client fails with:

CODE
2006-10-25T23:05:49Z INFO: Creating a dialog because we're in windowed mode and GTK is happy.
bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: ft_mem_free

The installed package is "fontconfig-2.3.2-r1" which provides libfontconfig-1.0.4.

What release of fontconfig is the Linux client built against?

Strange. I have the same one in 64-bit Gentoo and I can get in easy. Are you in 32-bit or 64-bit?

None at all. But I have an idea of the root cause of conflict and I'll try a workaround in a future release.

Hmm - odd. I'm using the standard 32bit 2006.1 profile on a Centrino laptop.

I was going to use "nm" to confirm that the symbol really isn't present - but, of course, Gentoo strips libraries and so no symbols remain.

Hi Darkside,

Worked great after getting drm working... Thanks for the help. BTW, 1.12.3.4 works fine for me!

using Xandros
11-01-2006 04:56
I am using SecondLife on both Windows XP on one PC and Xandros linux on another.
I used an earlier version of SecondLife on Xandros Linux and it worked very well, as well as in Windows XP.
But this new version 1.12.3.4 alpha for linux is just running slowly on my Xandros PC. Everything just seems so unresponsive and slow, I can hardly move or access inventory.
At the moment I can use it very well in Windows, but would like to use it in Linux, hopefully the next release of SL for linux will work properly.

No cleanup after reporting prior abend
11-01-2006 13:37
Hi. I'm using the current Linux client w/Ubuntu Edgy Eft, nVidia proprietary driver, 512 MB RAM. The client hung on me in midstream while in fullscreen mode. No response to mouse. I ended up doing ctrl-alt-bs to get out.

Next time I ran the client, it told me that it looked like I'd crashed it previously, and should it report the incident? Sure. I clicked yes, and (second) life went on as usual... save that, despite not having had to kill the client off abruptly since, I keep getting told it looks like you crashed last time, and should it report? I keep saying "no," because surely once is enough and you wouldn't get any additional data. Is there something I can do to clean up after the crash?

Client crash
11-05-2006 09:20
For what it's worth, I have exactly the same problem as Melissa. SL just crashes sometimes, and I have to switch to a text console and manually kill 2 or 3 of the second life processes to get it to quit. I have a notion that what provokes it is holding down control and alt while dragging, but that could be a mirage.

Crashes the system every time

It seems to start up fine, with sound and everything, I can see some movement and textures about to load just when it freezes the whole system. Nothing responds to anything and I have to reset the computer.

From the new readme -
11-23-2006 04:32
PROBLEM 2:- My whole system seems to hang when running Second Life.
SOLUTION:- This is typically a hardware/driver issue. The first thing to
do is to check that you have the most recent official drivers for your
graphics card.
SOLUTION:- Some residents with ATI cards have reported that running
'sudo aticonfig --locked-userpages=off' before running Second Life solves
their stability issues.
SOLUTION:- As a last resort, you can disable most of Second Life's advanced
graphics features by editing the 'secondlife' script and uncommenting
the line which reads 'export LL_GL_NOEXT=x'

(is this the right place to post this?)

I read in this thread that the Linux Alpha client does not interact with mozilla at'll,
is this why the F1 option does not bring up the help and why I can not load webpages from within the game as I am supposed to? I noticed there is a url launcher script, am I not using this correctly? It isn't a big problem, but it would be nice if these things worked - maybe it is because Linux users arn't supposed to need "help" because they read the "man"ual? lol =)
