After six hours of play with the 10.1.10.2 client for Linux, I have not experienced any bugs. Stability is now so good that I've managed three hours continuous this morning with no major glitches, or stability problems.

The only oddity that I found was when editing my appearance, some of the parameters set themselves to zero, so all my clothes shrunk. I've not seen it happen since.

System is:
Intel P4 1.7 Ghz, 512MB ram
nVidia GeForce 4 MX440 64MB graphics card
Mandriva Linux 2006.0 official
Linux kernel version 2.6.12-12mdk
nVidia drivers x86-1.0-8762 (latest version)

Kernel: 2.6.16
X version: X.org version 7
Video driver: i810
Video card model: Intel Corporation 82865G (onboard)
Amount of video memory: 96Mb (allocated by DVMT from the main system memory)
vendor_id: GenuineIntel
model name: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
cpu MHz: 2793.421
cache size: 512 KB

Make sure you have full 3d rendering? That onboard video card is suspect. Did previous builds run fine?

no sound and no fullscreen?
06-11-2006 07:21
Is it just me being dumb, or is it the linux client?

i don't get sound, and it refuses to do fullscreen, and it doesn't recognize my 128meg nvidia card... any other openGL game i have here works as expected though...
running on suse 9.2 with latest nvidia drivers and alsa sound.

The Linux client does not yet offer sound, and it will not detect your graphics card's memory correctly. You need to modify the settings.ini manually as described in another thread here in the forum: /263/9c/86253/1.html

Since this thread is likely to actually be read by the development team, I'll make a quick cross-post to my thread here:

/263/bd/113558/1.html

Summary: another "Known Issue" is that the Linux client is x86-only, but this is not stated on the website (lest not anywhere I saw), and the effect of attempting to run it on an unsupported architecture is less than informative.

It says "Linux i686" on the Linux client download page.

Not new... not the most obvious bit of info, but it's been there for a while.

I have two bugs that I didn't see around here that may be correctable..I dunno

1. All my text in in black boxes including the black text so I can't see it. Text such and the typed text the text in Notecards and on popups are not readable.

2. I can't seem to save screenshots so i don't know how to get screen caps of this either. :'(

@Maverynthia
The screenshot problem was introduced with .3, worked fine last week.
You can still take screenshots with an external application (easiest when you're running SL in a window not fullscreen). With ksnapshot (using KDE) I was able to make screenshots of the SL window without problems. The windows in the viewer are still seen with this approach, but it didn't seem like you were focused on making something picturesque here anyway.

missing directories in compressed bz2
06-18-2006 12:19
Hello,
I am trying the 1.10.3.4 alpha linux version.
There are some missing directories in the compressed file, blocking the fresh install from working.
In order to a fresh install work, you need to:
cd ~/games/SecondLife_1_10_3_4
mkdir -p SecondLife/cache
mkdir -p SecondLife/user_settings
Then, calling the game will work:
~/games/SecondLife_1_10_3_4/secondlife

Tested on Debian GNU / Linux 3.1 Sarge, maintained up to date with security fixes.
Regards.

That's not an SL bug, it's a bug in the tool you used to extract the archive. If you use the command-line tar utility, those directories are included. Some other file-rolling utilities ignore them because they're empty.

The first post says "max Vram size incorrectly shown as 16MB".
Is this the same bug as the fact that you cannot enable AGP?

Because I can not.

Nope, that's a different, but equally known, bug.

Hello,

I just tried the current Linux client on Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper) (arch. x86, kernel 686). My PC: Intel Celeron D 336 2.8Ghz, 512MB Ram, Geforce FX5200 128MB ... current nvidia driver from the repos ... WindowManager: XFCE4.4 (with GNOME-support)

FIRST TO SAY: The Linux client runs MUCH faster than the windows client and has significantly LESS lag inside the game ... so, congratulations and keep on the good work!

Some things I noticed:

- The libdb-4.2.so that is needed in order to run the client is NOT installed by default (because Dapper already uses the 4.3 version) ... So all Dapper-users should do a "sudo apt-get install libdb-4.2" before running secondlife binary ...

- If extracted with file-roller, some folders are missing and need to be created manually (as mentioned in a post above) ... I know this is a bug of the Extraction-Software, but maybe two empty (hidden) files inside those folders would solve the problem and make things easier for the average User to install

- Some keys collide with common window-manager hotkeys on Linux (like Alt, which is often used to drag the window) and moving the cursor inside text-inputs is not possible with the arrow-keys ...

- The game repeatedly outputs something like "failed to set locale EN.US-8859-1" (I dont exactly remember) on the console ... I am using a german locale, but ubuntu should install a lot of locales by default (but maybe this is not really a bug, but due to a misconfiguration) ...

but apart from this, this is the most stable "alpha"-version of a piece of software, I've ever seen

greets

Ryo

The text repeat bug has been in the Linux Alpha Client from day one. It will be fixed when Icculus starts working on the client again.

Apparently my previous bug report from a couple of days ago got lost in the database problems, so here goes again...

Every time I try to run the SL client, it locks up before displaying the login screen. The window opens, but it's just black. Here are the last few lines of output in the console:

From: someone

2006-06-28T02:04:02Z INFO: GL_VENDOR NVIDIA Corporation
2006-06-28T02:04:02Z GL_RENDERER GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU/PCI/SSE/3DNOW!
2006-06-28T02:04:02Z GL_VERSION 1.5.6 NVIDIA 87.62
2006-06-28T02:04:02Z

I made sure my drivers were updated, even going so far as to uninstall them totally, restart, then reinstall and restart again, just to be sure. No dice.

Here are the results of a backtrace:

As a side note, I am unable to close the SL window when it's in this state. I either need to kill the process, or close the terminal window it's running from.

I had this problem with 1.10.2, but it was fixed by updating my drivers. It came back with 1.10.3, but since my drivers are current I don't know what to do. I'm running Open SuSe (10.0) on an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with a GeForce4 MX video card. As noted before, up to 1.10.2 worked just fine, so the problem has something to do with the difference between 1.10.2 and 1.10.3.

I'm getting a bit bothered by this, since it's been a couple of weeks now, and I feel like my paid account is going to waste.

Every time I try to run the SL client, it locks up before displaying the login screen. The window opens, but it's just black.

I downloaded and installed 1.10.5.1, and on the first try, I saw the exact same behaviour. Killed the process and retried successfully. Quit after a little bit.
Next run gave me the black window again, so I killed the process and retried and it worked again. Out of curiousity, I quit right away, restarted, and got the black window.
Long story short: dozen retries or so and it alternates betweening a non-functional black window and the working login window.
On the 'black window' processes, the output of "strace -p <pid of bin/secondlife>" showed it stuck on a FUTEX_WAIT.
