This reminds me of my own story about a soccer mom. A few years ago, the minivan was new. I was picking the kids up from school. On the way home, I noticed the soccer ball was banging around between the seats. That's when I first realized - I was a soccer mom! coco

From: Kendra Bancroft biggest piece of mysogynist tripe I've seen in a while. Come on Kendra, that is a bit of a stretch. While making a blanket statement about soccer moms is a bit lame, it is more of a statement about people who have nothing better to do with their time but to try to "fix" things as they see fit than it does anything to do with a statement about women.

A few years ago I was knocking back some jaegermeister outside CBGB's, and complaining about pagan lesbian chainsmoking transsexual communists, as I fished through my Red Army backpack looking for a pack of smokes I couldn't help but notice that my asthame had poked a hole in my dental dam and their was lubricant all over my dilater!!!! From: Ulrika Zugzwang .. I could actually write a small novel on the subject starting with morality (beginning with Kantian underpinnings, moving to Utilitarianism, and closing with Modern Feminism) as applied to freedom, laws, and political systems in general... I tremble with awe before your towering intellect.

From: Kendra Bancroft Neualtenburg is a country. SL at large is an untamed frontier that awaits our iron fist in a velvet glove. You, too, will be assimilated to the new order. ::::: ::::: Only for sufficiently large sums of Lindens, say... enough to keep me happily shopping upon whim. Needless to say, you're better off not taking me up on that challenge. (grin) p.s.: If you Kant take it, go to Heigel. [waggling brows at you in mock ferocity]

From: JackBurton Faulkland Let me tell you the story of the soccer moms. About ten years ago I used to be able to drive home down the side streets to my home in chicago in 5 mins. Until one day there was an accident at one of the cross streets. The following week a group of "nothing else to do but make the world better as they see it" soccer moms peitioned to have every street have a stop sign on this 1 mile strectch. Of course they got there way and now it has doubled the travel time and depending on traffic sometimes trippled. Now I figure the people who spend the most time in SL are the soccer moms, the unemployed, and the college student. These are the people who will be running the government in SL. I believe that these people will push thier agenda out of bordem and trying to find a feeling of selfworth regardless of how it affects the masses. I am not a hater of these groups (i.e. formaly a college student and formaly unemployed though I have never been a soccer mom but some are hotties ). I just believe that a game is meant to be fun and not to be ruled, governed and debilitated by barriers put forth through the use of politics. haha.. This post is insulting as hell to women. You also sound a bit like Neal Boortz. Though I actually like him in small doses.

Again, how is insulting to anybody but soccer moms? It doesn't say all women are soccer moms, or make any blanket statement about women - yet it is insulting to women?

From: Cristiano Midnight Again, how is insulting to anybody but soccer moms? It doesn't say all women are soccer moms, or make any blanket statement about women - yet it is insulting to women? Soccer Mom has come to be the derogatory term used for "Stay at Home Moms" who tend to be on the conservative side of issues. They are thought to be moms that will do anything to see their child excel, and their world be perfect. They are considered out of touch with real issues. Women who like to talk about "issues they could not possibly understand". They are the new doormat housewife that does what she is told and may as well be a ditz blonde. **.. No offense to blondes meant in this statement. I'm only repeating what I have learned over the last almost 8 years (six of which were spent as a strictly stay at home mom)

He could have just as easily used "petty bureaucrat" as an example. It's genderless and desscribes a particular mindset. Soccer MOM on the other hand casts the problem in a female only light, and assumes all soccer moms think alike. Frankly, if I was to adhere to generalizations on people who complicate matters unecessarily, I'd have used "corporate stooge" as an example.

I agree with Pendari and Kendra on this one. It's misogyny. To prove it to yourself, replace the word "soccer moms" with "blacks" or "protestants". It's a questionable anecdote with a streak of ethnocentrism running through it. ~Ulrika~

I agree that a more generalized statement could have been used, but attributing that statement to hatred of women is as overreaching as the blanket labelling of anything that mentions race as racist.

Cris. Did you read my post? About what this statement has come to mean? Most especially when used in the context it was used?

More importantly - are soccer moms anti-intellectual and what are they lobbying?

Anyways your interpretation of a soccer mom is not mine. If thats what you believe a soccer mom to be that is your own thaught so i cant help you there. You failed to read the statement in entirety because i put them on the same plane as college students and the unemployed neither above or below mysef . So ask yourself this question: "What do these three groups have in common?". Let me answer for you:"IDLE TIME". Ok say it does offend soccer moms but in no way is it derogatory towards women. To say this is offensive to women you would have to accept the following as the truth. "All soccer moms are women" and "all women are soccer moms". Which is obviously a fallicy.

You could replace it with Hockey Dads... then have a line in there about them all beating each other up after lobbying for the stop signs.

From: Pendari Lorentz Soccer Mom has come to be the derogatory term used for "Stay at Home Moms" who tend to be on the conservative side of issues. Would middle-class white woman in the suburbs be a better term? Soccer Mom is not an insult unless; well someone is ashamed of being a Soccer Mom. I think being called Mom or Dad is probably the largest insult of all, period. Give birth, lose your personal identity. People are labeled everyday; it is one of the things that makes humans comfortable. You don’t hear the NASCAR Dads complaining. Yet, Women have to bitch about every damn thing and wonder why they can get no respect. You can’t ask for equality then whine about every thing gender based and ask for preferential treatment. Women complain non-stop about PMS and Menopause but they want to be treat equally in society (like that dumbass joke in off topic). I’m special! I’m different! I have cramps, so I get a free pass. Feminism is a failure; you can’t have it both ways ladies.

From: Siggy Romulus More importantly - are soccer moms anti-intellectual and what are they lobbying? Well, I'm no longer a soccer mom. Now I'm a softball mom. In fact, I just got a call from my girl to get in my MINIVAN and go pick up her BAD SOFTBALL SELF from practice. However, I am not anti-intellectual, nor un-intellectual, and in SL (and other games) I lobby for plenty of things. coco <---- is proud to be softball mom (and just plain old Mom)

From: Pendari Lorentz Cris. Did you read my post? About what this statement has come to mean? Most especially when used in the context it was used? Yes, I did. I knew what the phrase means, and you were speaking about what it has come to mean to you. Other people interpret it differently. I know exactly the type of person he was referring to - I have encountered them myself (and I must say some of those soccer moms are complete MILFs, but that is beside the point of this discussion). Fine, be insulted as a stay at home mom because you think you were lumped in with that - but the comment is not broadly insulting to women as a whole. PS - soccer mom, housewife, and stay at home mom are not interchangeable. Soccer mom has a very specific meaning. I personally like how they are best personified on the show Weeds.
