From: Chip Midnight The best advice I can give you is to just have fun. Explore. See what kinds of things people are doing and creating. Spend time dabbling with the building tools. If something inspires you and you'd like to try your hand at it start asking questions and experimenting. If you are having fun learning how to do something, keep at it. If not, don't feel like you have to do anything at all except whatever strikes your fancy at any given moment. agree 100% with that. it's the best way 2 learn. there's no such thing as being nosey, when it comes 2 learning how 2 make things. but now if ur peeping thru windows, u might get blasted to another sim LMAO

From: Enabran Templar My success or failure is my responsibility and no one else's. My risk and my reward belong to me. It has always been this way.
The rich get richer? Nonsense. Success isn't a captured bird that sings perpetually. Success is a seed that must be planted, a tree that must be nurtured. You cannot harvest its fruits without wetting its soil and keeping it free of weeds each day and each week.
etc etc This is quite true. The one thing I remember from taking a sociology class is this: The people who are rich today are not the same people who were rich ten years ago, nor will they be the same people who are rich ten years from now. Some who are rich, will cease to be rich. Others who are not rich, will either make themselves rich, or come into a windfall. Wealth is something that has to be MAINTAINED. A family I know lived in a modest 1-story home and drove Escorts and Tauruses and similar cars for twenty years or so. The husband and wife ran a real estate firm as a team. A few years ago they sold their house and moved into an $800,000.00 property. Now they drive BMWs, but they keep the Taurus around because it's still useful. That should be a clue as to the frugality of people who manage to stay wealthy. Because they worked very hard for a long time, and lived well within their means, they were able to move up to a significantly higher standard of living. Their old back yard consisted of a concrete slab with a few flowers and a bit of grass. Their new back yard has an electronically controlled heated pool and a gazebo. Many people say, "Why, if I had ten thousand dollars, I'd buy a top-of-the-line plasma TV!" This is why they will never be rich. Too much focus on "what's good for me right now" and not enough focus on "hard work and dedication now."

There are more things in life than scripting and building (and dealing in land). And, as you know, I think LL should do more to encourage those kinds of things, rather than doing things to discourage them, like removing the event stipend. SL should have a greater variety of things to do and ways to make money. Or valves. One of the two. coco

yes it's true there are more things to SL than just building/scripting/creating. although linden might have cut stipends, i don't think it's stopped people from earning money. doors are opened when things are created.
i.e. the creation of tringo, slingo, blood 21 .... without these games being created, there would be limited, if any, need 4 hosting positions. n land owners help those that help them by offering them a "salary".
another i.e. clothing designers .... opened up a need 4 models. although some may not be able 2 pay with lindens, they do pay by offering them the clothes they model at no cost. granted, some people just take their own pics but i still c modelling agencies
so even tho linden cut stipend, it gave people more of a want 2 become more creative n think of ways to continue making money on their own

The event stipend was a total failure and a huge mistake in the first place. Now everyone is too used to getting money when they should have been made to pay for entry (or pay for stuff at the event, or have the event find other funding from other SLers).

AND I LOVE BLOOD 21! It's also true that necessity is the mother of invention. Nonetheless, this is still a problem in SL. coco

well it's one thing 2 say that it's a problem in SL. but the question is, what do u feel U can do 2 help with the situation?
not being mean or sarcastic, but if it's seen as a problem then shouldn't creativity b a factor in helping 2 solve the problem? y depend on Linden to come up with a solution?

From: Michi Lumin ~*MAGIC!*~ Hahahaha. Yeah, I remember the last time I heard an "everything should be free" conversation. It was my own voice I heard. And I was six years old. By the way, I think General Motors should create a car that runs on water vapor and pollution. And only costs $500. And looks sexy.

One of my friends came onto SL, spent $22 for the 3-month landholder subscription. Got 512m2 from first land. Put a shack on it for three months, then decided it wasn't for him, and sold the plot for L$3000.
He spent $22 all told, logged on 4 times, and by the time he decided to check out he had L$11,000 and sold it on Lindex for US$41.
So he made $19 on SL without doing a thing.
This isn't the most noble business model, but he wasn't even trying to make money.
If it's this easy to make twenty donuts on SL, then if you really feel like you absolutely cannot even *survive*, then you're doing something wrong.
You CANNOT get output if you put in NO INPUT.
If you don't want to WORK, you'll have to PAY for your entertainment. If you don't want to PAY for your entertainment, you'll have to WORK for your entertainment.
At least ONE of the two above statements are true for ANY online service, be it WOW, EQ, TSO, There, and yes, SL.
But so many people slide in on the free accounts and proclaim; "HERE I AM. ENTERTAIN ME."
If THAT is not the attitude of a "Lord" I don't know what is.
The other week I logged on as my 'newbie alt' - because I DO want to see what the newbie experience is like.
I made SOME money at Tringo, but then finally I dropped US$20 on my avatar and was able to buy pretty much everything i wanted for my av, and had some left over.
Now I realize $20 is "a lot" for some people. But if that's the case... it's kinda interesting that you're sitting behind a high-spec computer hooked up to a broadband connection, let me just say.

But... but Michi. It should be easier. Linden Lab should make it easier. And more fun.
And they should make it better, too.
So people will have more fun.
They need to improve it.
By making it more fun.
And easier.
It'll be fun.
