"Let them eat cake!"

I am where I am because I worked hard to get here and I'm still working my ass off to go even further. :) Whether you have talent or you don't, it doesn't matter. You only need perseverance and a driving need to go beyond. It is entirely up to you if you will either (a) work hard to rise up the ranks or (2) be a pessimistic bum who believes they can't do anything and won't lift a finger to help themselves and then complain about being so poor and down trodden (not to mention expect to be given holdouts - hah!)

In the end it's still you. Only you have the power to change your situation and no one else.

“Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration.” - Thomas Edison

Peasants and lords.. arent the peasants the one who used to do all the work, where as the lords did nothing but live on their backs, doing nothing at all?

Excellent point......... now back to work :)

I hope you understand that doesn't matter - not that it means you shouldn't be proud of your achivements, but that it doesn't address the point. What matters is what new people who haven't started yet can do. Remember, they have to compete with you now.

No, that isn't true. If your mind just goes blank when you try and think of something to make, then your perseverance is worthless, because you have nothing to persevere with doing.

Do you realise how inappropriate that is when we're talking about SL? I think Linden Labs would have an awful lot of power to change their situation. ;)

Well, to use my crotchety old man voice for a second... "you whippersnappers don't know how easy you have it nowadays!" Seriously, there may have been a lot less competition "back in the day" but there was also no wiki, no good templates, no volumes of forum posts answering questions, no mentors, no tutorials, not nearly as many cool things in the world to draw inspiration from, you were taxed weekly on everything you had in the world, and the ONLY way to make money was to earn it or win it or have someone give it to you. It's far easier to get started now than it ever was in the mystical "good ol' days".

Heh. Well, to help me in that area it'd take a template with colored areas marked with "talented people put one of these colours here, but only if this colour is here.." for each area. ;)

Having a 'mind block' (writer's block, creator's block, etc) doesn't mean squat. Everyone gets that from time to time. Even me. Half the time I lose inspiration of what i want to make. When that happens I take a break or find more ideas to give me inspiration. But that doesn't mean I stop or give up entirely.

My point here is that if you don't perservere to work on anything, you gain nothing. (And that applies to both RL and SL)

As for LL, they have no say if I'm going to be upperclass, middle class, poor, landbaron, bum, designer, comsumer, creator <insert random label here> whatever. It's still me. All LL does is provide the world to live in, everything else is us.

well putting my 2 cents in ........ i dont think u can classify class of people in just categories. SL is just too big 2 classify it as such. when i first started playing, like alot of people, i was frustrated and didn't have a clue 2 what i was doing. but i relaxed and just chilled. enjoyed the game and learned at the same time. i picked up photoshop and some very easy to use templates 4 clothing (thanks 2 Mr. Midnight :) - ur templates ROCK !!! lol) and spent a couple of hours each day learning on my own, taking time in between to enjoy the games and other features offered in SL. now I own my own clothing boutique, own and run a mall, a club and am learning scripting while my husband learns the building. and we take the time 2 teach each other what we learn.

i've just recently become an SL instructor because i feel if people really want to learn things, they should have some help in doing so. BUT that doesn't mean just sit around and wait 4 a class, knowledge is something u can gain simply by exploring.

"The peasants! They're revolting!"

"Oh, they aren't all that bad."

Actually, if forced to classify SLers I think the best one could do is three classes, really:

Creator - A small minority.
Consumer - A small minority.
Some combination of the above - The overwhelming majority. (I know, not a catchy name for the group.)

Three guesses which group I'd be a member of?

Why is that a problem?

Just have fun. Contrary to popular belief, you don't need L$ to have a blast here. I bought a few dollars worth of L$ here and there early on, but you only need to do that if there's some gizmo you're dying to have and are too lazy to make yourself.

If being creative is fun for you, you may discover one day that your latest little doodle has a person or two wanting to buy it. That may be a golden opportunity! Seize it if you want. If not, just keep having fun and enjoying the creativity.

The worst habit you can pick up here? Saying "I can't."

Though some people seem content to say "They can't," while referring to some undefined, helpless group of people. Don't pay them any mind, they don't mean you. They actually mean themselves. :)

No, really, in all seriousness.

How?

Enabran, you don't get it.

People who think making money in SL is too "hard" should be given more money to buy stuff.

The details aren't their problem.

Yeah. After all, they can just make more. If everyone gets L$5000 a week, they could afford to buy a lot of those L$500 and L$1000 things they wanted, so they could have more fun.

You're exactly right. Michi knows that all too well, though. She's just making trouble. :)

Well, enough with the sarcasm on my end.

I'll put this out to chew on:

Imagine four archetypes.

1) The stoner type who bums around all day and watches TV.
2) The person who goes to work every day, 9-5, and brings home 30k.
3) The plumber who started his own business and works all day, but brings in about $90k.
4) The heir who has inherited millions and bums around all day and eats caviar.

Which is a Lord? Which is a Peasant?

.. Which one is closest to who you are?
.. Which one is closest to who some people you know in SL are?
.. How many Lords do you think there *really* are in SL?
.. How many *actual* Peasants?

lol oright michi, u lil troublemaker :P

all i can say is there's alot of opportunities in Second Life, it's not a question of category. it's more a question of, what can i do 2 make my Second Life a satisfying one? once u can figure the answer 2 that question, then u can set ur goal 2 get there n exceed that satisfaction.

There is a sad, sad lack of mad scientists in today's world. :(

A family member's girlfriend's father I knew was a real mad scientist. He's Slavic. And has a lab in his basement. She was fixing a computer one day and her dad walked into the room.

"Aaaah what is that?"
"It's a computer, dad."
"Aaaah.... Does it have magnets?"
"Uh. I think so."
"Aaaah.... Lasers?"
"Um, yeah?"
"Aaaah.... Does it have walves?"
"What?"
"Walves!"
"Valves? Uh, no.."
"Ach! Worthless."

And he walked out of the room. It was wonderful.

I can imagine this perfectly in my head. We definitely need more of those people.

Then again, the mad scientist role seems to have fallen onto the shoulders of college geeks. Like those MIT dudes who rigged up a bunch of hamsters to generate music using MIDI?

Aww yeah.

The best advice I can give you is to just have fun. Explore. See what kinds of things people are doing and creating. Spend time dabbling with the building tools. If something inspires you and you'd like to try your hand at it start asking questions and experimenting. If you are having fun learning how to do something, keep at it. If not, don't feel like you have to do anything at all except whatever strikes your fancy at any given moment. :)
