Hey, I just re-read this.

I thought you made houses for tinies? That look like hollowed acorns?

Why didn't you check out my shop instead of writing this? I gave Enabran a landmark to my shop, and he accepted it - an hour before he wrote this.

You're a bohemian. Leave class for the small minded. Creative types are above it.

C'mon you guys, I thought Enabran and myself had successfully derailed this class-war last night and crashed it into the SL-TV train wreck. :)

I disagree. Take me for example. Most people dont know me or my store/products. But I make enough money to cover my teir (8192m) and have shopping money and money to sell at times. There is nothing super about the stuff I make. I do make a few nice things but they are things anyone could make if they took the time. And the difficult things for me, like scripts, I used public domain ones. The only thing I did do was buy Poser and bang my head against it for a longgg time. I even had to learn Photoshop, well the basics, like layers. But nothing about the poses/animations nor Photoshop work is 'elite' by any stretch. And I probably only spend 5% of my time either helping customers or building something.

What Im trying to say is, if Im a Lord then the real talented people in SL are MEGA-MONDO SUPA-DUPA LAWDS!

I was going to respond w/ my own post, but Annahs post pretty much sums me up so I'll use it :)

There are tons of things I still have to learn, when I feel driven to do so. I doubt anyone has seen the few things I have made and have a shop for in SL, but since I just learned to do what I HAVE done, I'm quite pleased with myself. I am certainly not a 'LORD', and in no way feel like a 'peasant'.

Landmarks, like textures, auto-accept. :)

In any case, I was in the midst of discussions in Gibson and didn't feel like disengaging to look at houses for tinies.

I dont know what all the fuss is about, I am a "Noob" and I have no problem getting my hands on money. Then again, my RL husband is one of these lords you speak of.

I think that's part of the charm. You have to be a tiny, you see.

Is anyone a tiny anymore?

Farking Marxists, the lot of you! Didn't we get rid of all you ivory tower, classist, pinko academics during the last purges?

Enabran, for someone who claims to be so offended by ignorance (in the sense of lack of knowledge about something), you certainly go to great lengths to remain willfully ignorant.

Not only do you scarcely know a damn thing about what I make, you actually seem to think you get to tell ME what I make. I don't only make houses for Tinies.

If you try to be successful with an optomistic approach then your bound to get to your goal... if you dont then it just wasnt to be and at least you can say youve tried.

BUT if you always tackle things with a negative approach then you may aswell not bother. Cause i can guarantee failure rules negativity.

example.. I joined SL and had no coding/scripting experience what so ever. Less than 2 weeks into SL i started to mess with freebie scripts cos i so much wanted to be able to script. less than 4 weeks into SL i started scripting a major project which i think even the veteran scripters havnt latched onto doing. And anything script wise that people ask me to do or i decide to do myself i go to it hammer and tongs and i always feel that it can be done. Im very optimistic and that is what has driven me from being someone that says "I wish i could do that" to someone that say "I can do that... no sweat"... with a little bit o f patience and drive anything is possible. BTW im just reaching 2 months age in SL now and i feel my skill in scripting is more like 1 year. Ive learnt so much in such short time because of the want and need to be successful.

Hope that inspires you guys that are sat there whining, all curled up with your hot cup of coco and your furry slipper

Lords and Peasants do not exist in Second Life for two reasons:

1) Social mobility: All residents are able to encounter each other.

2) Upward mobility: Nothing prevents residents from educating themselves and acquiring experience, or applying their RL education and experiences, and using this to move along an "upward" path within Second Life. How a resident wishes to measure their upward path is entirely up to them.

But Jamie, I think Michi's point is if someone came up with a good enough event, people would pay for it. I know I would. I'm not going to pay someone to stream MP3's to me while I run a dance animation on loop and talk to people. I'm sure a lot of people out there enjoy that, I personally do not. I think if enough people REALLY, REALLY did enjoy it, you could charge for it.

If there was a cinema showing SL-made machinima, I'd pay to go see it.
Hell, if there was a clever enough poetry reading or game I'd pay for it, I went to a couple "Slictionary"/"Primtionary" events and payed money into the pot recently because I had a lot of fun.

But how much would you be willing to pay for it? L$5? L$10? L$100? L$250?

I've only seen one event charge L$250 for entrance and that was the SL Linden Auction, and that was being attended by people ready to drop L$100K+ at the event.

The reason I mention this is right now simulators only hold a limited amount of people, and a lot of these people attending event do not have that kind of money.

Let's take, for example, an entrance fee of L$50. Let's even assume you manage to pack a sim full of 40 AVs

40 AVs @ L$50 a head = L$2000

In my personal opinion, L$2000 does not even begin to cover the costs of both the land you're holding your event on nor the time it was worth to organize and run the event.

At the same time, I've watched people run away from events charging L$5 for entry.

So if you're gonna charge entry, make sure you only do events that will attract the old and the wealthy, because anyone newer or poorer will gladly choose a free event over a paid one.

I mentioned tip jars. Post #194.

coco

Post # 194:

From: Cocoanut Koala
Well, they do depend on tips a lot.

Where's the part about jars?

Please don't try to diminish my point by co-opting and/or watering it down. There were many people who made a good deal of Simoleans in TSO because of tip jars.

Your response to Michi's post about charging a nominal fee for events is not the same as my point about TSO tip jars, and I am not even sure what point you were making in post 194 (who is "they" who are depending on tips?).
