Mystic, according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FileCompression#Zip%20(.zip), the Ubuntu archive manager can decompress a file in .zip format. Also, make sure you try the alternate source for the exporter file (PKPounceworks, full URL in the first post).

two wings3d questions
01-29-2009 12:27
Is there any way to make "large" prims using sculpties? The trick with tiny prims works great, is there a trick to making larger prims, or are we stuck with sculpting mega prims?
On a tricky'er note, is there a good way to handle LOD issues with wings3d and the sculpty plugin? I've been reading the blender thread as well, and there seems to be some help there, but I don't really understand it, and have no idea how one would do that in wings3d. I don't really want to suffer the pain of trying to learn blender again - I really like how easy wings3d is to use, and would hate to go back. Thanks ![]() |

Dear Sir,
The links for the Sculpty zip files do not compress but I'm using a MacBook Pro. Thanks for your hard work! Things happen though! Sincerely, Fred Scoggins |

Your zip files are all corrupted. Please delete the links and put valid links up.
And what you have listed here does not match the tiny alternative file on the other website. Do you need a real mirror for valid files? And is there a real explanation for how to install the tool? I.e.; what came out of the alternative sure doesn't contain much so something is bad wrong somewhere. |

After a few false starts I’ve finally been able to create some interesting sculpted tree trunk in Wings and successfully export them to SL via the plugin. Thank you Omei for your tireless and enthusiastic support of this work.
I’ve looked through this thread but can’t seem to get a better handle on when it is appropriate to export using the first option File>Export>Second Life Sculpty, and when it would be better to drill deeper and select the Sculpty Export Options… Is there any *general* guiding principals of when to choose which options depending on the attributes of the object I’m attempting to render? Also, would these decisions vary depending on whether the final texture will be applied to a standard prim (which can be re-sized) and a Megaprim which cannot? Thank you in advance for any light you can shed on this subtle mystery. |

As for megaprims, not allowing recentering might come in handy if you didn't have a megaprim that was exactly the size you wanted. That is, you could use a larger megaprim and make your sculpty not fill its bounding box. |

How about taking the plane template, exporting it as a sculpty and then re-importing it with a spherical topology? Thanks, that worked great |

Hello, I tried getting the plugin to work, and while it shows up under the 'Export' menu, when I try to do so, it always says that it's an 'Unsupported Mesh Size', do you know what to do in order to fix this?

02-21-2009 15:59
I'm getting the same thing where it askes for a password and then even if I hit enter it gives me an error saying unexpected end of file.
Fixed Guess I got a bad download or something so I tried it several times and after the untenth try and several downloads I got the one from here http://pkpounceworks.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=28&func=startdown&id=119 And it worked now I just have to get wings to quit yelling at me about the mesh size >< |

First off, thanks for making these plugins, they are great! I am hoping someone can help me though. When I generate a UV map, it is always blurry. In all the tutorials I have found on line this does not happen. Instead of seeing the little boxes with the letters I just see colored blobs and white smears. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I am using .99.53
Thanks! |

Sardonicus, can you elaborate on what you are trying to do? Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't be trying to get Wings to generate a UV map. The UV map for a sculpty is defined by SL, and Wings doesn't know anything about that. If you start from one of the templates I provided, or if you import a sculpty from an existing bitmap, the plug-in automatically creates the appropriate UV map.

It may be a Wings problem, or something with my video card or OS. Here is a screen shot of a sculpty I imported from a .bmp. I did a select all, then the UV map command, as it did not seem to auto-generate one. I then dragged the UV map to the default texture and set it as diffuse:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/35550458@N06/3300861857/ Basically, I followed the steps in Natalia's sculpty texturing tutorial at: http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2007/06/day-279-sculpted-prims-tutorial-part-4.html I noticed a few other people posted comments about this problem on her tutorial, and making sure the texture was 512 x 512 did not solve my problem. I was hoping someone who knew more about Wings might be able to help me. Thanks! Matt |

Thanks for the picture. I think I can guess the problem. It looks like you imported a 128x128 bitmap that was produced from a 32x32 model. That's actually a natural thing to do given the exporter options, but it would cause this problem.
First, let me tell you how to fix it, in case that's all you care about. Before importing your bitmap into Wings, use your favorite 2D image program and re-size the bitmap to 32x32. Assuming I have correctly diagnosed the issue, that will solve your problem. Now, in case you actually want to understand what's happening -- when you export with (the default) 128x128 resolution, pixels will be replicated as needed. (I added this feature and made it the default at a time when there was no better way to work around compression-induced distortions that got introduced when the sculpty was imported into SL.) But this has a bad side effect when it comes to texturing, because only small "islands" of the texture you think you are applying will actually be visible on the surface when you re-import it. The rest of the texture will be assigned to degenerate surfaces that won't be visible. Given the present and future plans for sculpties, I recommend you always export at 64x64 for importing into SL. But if you don't save the .wings file, and need to re-import a bitmap, you'll still want to re-size it back to the original modeling dimensions before importing it. |
