From: Couldbe Yue There are extremes but then look at most western european countries (exclude the uk as it's got that puritan streak at the moment) most of those countries indulge in some social engineering. Living in a society means you can't have a free for all, there have to be some laws and restriction simply because there are some people who are incapable of playing nice. Most 'extremes' don't begin as extremes. They start out as popular and even reasonable ideas. The problem is incremental 'mission creep' into extremes. People in England today accept government intrusions into their lives that were inconceivable at the time of the Hindley murders. Britain fought two world wars on principles that have been largely abandoned today.

From: Deltango Vale I used to visit Holland, but then you started getting silly. I can smoke hash in a cafe (cool) but I can't have a cigarette in the same cafe (boring). You are also adopting the Puritanical attitude to sex that is sweeping the globe (with the exception of New Zealand). I give you guys maybe ten years before you're down in the gutter with the rest of us. You cannot smoke in most EU countries now in public areas such as cafes etc. and as a smoker i agree with that rule and if you are doing bongs why have a cigarette if i go to a cafe i want a spliff not a cigarette lol On the sex attitude please give examples as to where Holland is puritanical as you obviously know something I don't as a resident, although there are some villiages like Urk, where they are still religious, but thats far and few between. Sex clubs are thriving and growing as are sex cinemas and the like and if this is puritanical in your eyes then what a strange world you inhabit http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/mar/08031409.htmland i quote from that page ( and bear in mind this is not just for gay people lol): From: someone Amsterdam Decriminalizes Public Sex in Famous Park Dutch police urge whole country to follow example
ANSTERDAM, March 13, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The government of Amsterdam has decided to decriminalize sexual activity in the Netherlands' most popular and famous park, the Vondelpark.
Frequented by families and tourists, the Vondelpark features ponds, children's playgrounds, an open air theater with free performances, and woodsy areas where authorities say that couples of any sexual combination will be free to copulate beginning in September of this year.
The park has reportedly become a favorite meeting place for homosexuals, who often engage in sexual activities there. Local law has long imposed a fine for those caught in such behavior, but under the new law such fines will no longer apply after dark.
In addition to restricting public sexual activity to nighttime, the law will also allow police to eject couples who make too much noise. Leaving behind condoms or other trash is also prohibited.
"Why prohibit something that hardly bothers other people and that, to the contrary, gives much pleasure to a particular group?" asked Paul van Grieken, an Amsterdam official, according to the Spanish publication El Periodico.
The Dutch police's National Diversity Expertise Center is advising the rest of the nation to follow Amsterdam's example and lift restrictions on public sex in all of the nation's public parks, according to De Telegraaf newspaper.
According to the Center, "cruising" gays in public parks should be tolerated in order to protect homosexuals from "queer bashers", although no explanation was given as to why the policy would afford such protection.
The Vondelpark is the Netherlands' most beloved park, visited by approximately 10 million people each year.
Ironically, the park is named after Joost van den Vondel, a Dutch poet whose conversion to Catholicism in 1641 inspired his most famous work, "Lucifer". The park contains a statue of the poet.
The Dutch homosexual organization "COC" voiced its approval for Amsterdam's change of policy.
"Cruising is something belonging to all time and banning it does not work anyway. They do it surreptitiously and mostly without others being annoyed by it. But homos at cruising spots are often attacked. By now agreeing rules of behaviour on this, safety can be increased," said COC Amsterdam chairman Dennis Boutkan, according to the Netherlands' government news agency, NIS.
The Netherlands has made a name for itself among European nations for its anti-life and anti-family policies. The Netherlands was the first country in Europe to legalize "homosexual marriage", and is now spending millions of dollars to promote homosexuality in schools. Dutch doctors freely euthanize the sick, elderly, and handicapped infants. Government subsidized abortion on demand is available until the 24th week of pregnancy
As a british Ex-pat here i can tell you i would rather be here in Holland with the relaxed attitudes and laws than in the UK where most people and the government are puritanical and stuck up their own arses. Sometimes it makes me cringe that i am even british.

From: Couldbe Yue I went over a couple of days before the ban (hadn't been over for 12 months) and found it really odd to be able to sit inside and smoke. I can understand why the smoking fetish is gaining ground now.
Amsterdam is cracking down on a lot of the more adult pastimes, it's a shame but tbh if it stops all those bucks night/yobbish weekender crowds that have been flooding it down the last decade or so then perhaps it's not such a bad idea. (yeah, yeah, I'm getting old and intolerant). Saturday night in the red light district actually reminds me a bit of a welcome area inworld. OK for 5 minutes and then I really need to leave the zoo sharpish. Amsterdam is not cracking down on the Red light area its cracking down on the organized crime that has grown unfortunately in that area like the illegals immigrants etc. and as a side effect that has seen a closure of some of the seedier and crime run clubs and bars I promise you i will prove when you visit that its all alive and well PS: Holland isn't just Amsterdam we let our hair down outside the city to

From: Deltango Vale I agree 100%. It's just a shame to see the dominoes fall one after another. Now with that i agree, but truly the way of life out here is so different to the UK and as i said although yes, there are enclaves of puritanical feelings within the country, that is not the norm and the government here does strive to seek an equal balance between freedoms and rules that stifle

From: Couldbe Yue I just don't get this at all. How can you be on the list when as long as I change my parcel description I'm fine?
This is mindbogglingly ridiculous.
Will you be around inworld over the weekend and would you give me a tour of what he said was wrong (if he did say anything - he wouldn't even tell me what word I needed to remove from my description)?
Has anyone else been inspected? There can't have just been two of us so far. I actually visited your store for comparison to mine since Blondin had said yours was OK.. As an aside let me say first that your design there definitely falls under the heading of "elegantly simple" - one could only wish the RL "toyshop" I've been known to visit was as tastefully done. Mine is a little more on the raw side.. industrial themed with most of the demo models having kinda blatant sculpts visible and most of the poseballs resulting in them being visibly used. I WAS certain this was an "adult" build but with the waffling from LL I have resolved to make a few changes. Since I was running short on prims as I released new products anyway, I actually expanded the plot by purchasing adjacent parcels so I can add the third floor that exists in my mostly-identical main off-mainland location. That third floor with the warning note by the elevator that says "If you didnt read the warning downstairs, read this one.. on this floor there are no demo models with safety features for the solo shopper, these are all live production versions. Step through this curtain you are in a play area. RLV users on their own that 'try out' the stuff up here might end up as public property for a while until somebody is kind enough to let them out...." should be enough to make sure, and I DO want to make sure because even if some Linden says "oh, you're ok..." I know I'd still be an AR magnet on non-adult land. Therefore I either get my relocate or I tier down to basic and only sell on adult flagged private sims. Non-adult mainland just wont be a safe place for me to do business.

Whether we like it or not, some people are influenced by what they see or experience and living in the risk adverse culture we do these days the heavy hand of over reaction is quite common. It's easier than teaching people to critically assess things.
as a semi aside, one of the most interesting things about that berkman report was one of the submissions. It seems kids are more concerned about online bullying than sex, yet it really hasn't been addressed by the final recommendations.
That's the one thing that concerns me about the merge. SL is self selecting for sociopaths and other mental health problems and the kids will be exposed to it without the information to be able to deal with it and that makes them vulnerable. As said, while I agree: LL can make that non-reactionary and non-repressive, by just adding a pure PG continent, or they can play the fascism way of culture/lifestyle-politics. Asked, why they avoid to establish the new continent as strict PG for all who want to be there by free choice, Blondin answered, that this would not meet their criterias of their (my annotation: fascism) program. Additonal: nothing bad happened along the last 6-7 years, beside one investigation by german prosecution about a child-porn crime. But this sort of crime happens also in cloisters and political partys, as we know, because some sick perv individuals are sitting in any society and in any organisation. The community was and is able to integrate each and everyone as well it is able to manage the grid civilisized and to isolate and lock out bad behavior. It works. Every day. Around the clock. We have no wars between lifestyles in game. Every nice or weird non-criminal spleen finds and has its place and all is good. We have no extreme situations in there, because any possible chaos is somehow not able to appear, because of kind of mass mainstream of written and unwritten rules wich are strong established by a) LL and b) by ourselfs. Even the naivest and craziest noobs are ever relative fast disciplined and going mainstream after a while. SL is in fact self-integrating and well socialized developed, meanwhile or better to say: from its start on. Trouble, real and existential trouble, we have only with LL itself. They produce any sort of chaos, stress and damage for the whole SL population frequently.

From: Argent Stonecutter How about "gorean only"... or "anime only" or "furry only" so people looking for Tuxedo Mask outfits or furry tails won't find wedding stores?
Improving search is really important... they're using a google search engine, so why can't they give us google's advanced search... but not really relevant here. A scaleable "tags" system would be a boon for search - yep. Much in the way you can tag blog posts in most blogging software in a way that lets people find other posts dealing with the same tag, being able to tag our land with a limited quantity, but an unlimited selection of tags would really help search a lot. This would prevent the places that have their lot descriptions as nothing but a list of spammy keywords to trigger search results from being able to do so. You get 10-12 words - pick them wisely! As searching using this system evolves, searchers will learn that the generic "BDSM" term probably does bring up a lot of spam results. But maybe the actual BDSM community gets together and comes up with their own tag "BD/SM". Once a person has found a Bondage sim, they need only look at the tag description to see "Oh - this place uses a "BD/SM" tag instead of "BDSM" - I'll do a tag search on that and see what I come up with! Legitimate BDSM locations will be able to spare that tag slot for that tag - while a spammy location trying to cover ground will have to be selective and can't afford that one. Just thinkin' off the top of my head - but that would be a very nice start to improving search over the long run.

From: Lord Sullivan PS: Holland isn't just Amsterdam we let our hair down outside the city to I know, my friends live on the other side of Schipol. It's gone from a little village to a complete with windmills to a commuter town, but is still as laid back as ever. The centre of Amsterdam doesn't even bear much relationship to the rest of the city either. that 10 minute walk to Jordaan proves that. I think the Dutch are seriously cool. They range from the deeply religious to the extremely liberal and everyone manages to rub along together because they understand tolerance. I've always wanted to work there and hopefully one day I will. You can still smoke inside in Spain. Bless their little hearts

It's deliberately set up to be non threatening and yet it's really a red rag to anyone who gets offended by kink in any form. I hosted an art exhibition last year in my old shop and there were actually people who wouldn't go because it was being hosted in a space above a BDSM shop!!! ffs I'm going to come for a nosey through your place. Those signs sound like they are worth the tp over in themselves

From: Couldbe Yue There are extremes but then look at most western european countries (exclude the uk as it's got that puritan streak at the moment) At the moment? It's always had that puritanical streak. The problem with the U.K. government is that ON THE SURFACE they allow the extreme minority, in the case of the recent extreme pornography law (Section 63 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 200 just one person, to dictate to the overwhelming majority of U.K. citizens! But that's just a ploy to show good reason for changing the law. That latest law on extreme pornography brought internet law into line with domestic law and puts the consumer and not the producer in breach of the law. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/battle-lines-drawn-over-bill-to-ban-extreme-porn-1216231.html

Philosophical issues (draft, unedited)
04-11-2009 09:17
From: Lord Sullivan You cannot smoke in most EU countries now in public areas such as cafes etc. and as a smoker i agree with that rule... Now that is interesting. So, Joe takes his life savings and builds a cafe. He chooses a menu (burgers) and begins hiring staff. During the interviews, he asks, "Do you mind working in a place that sells meat and allows the customers to smoke?" One applicant says, "Gee, I'm a vegetarian, I didn't know you were going to sell burgers. Maybe this isn't the place for me." Another applicant says, "Hmmm, naw, I don't want to work in a cafe that allows smoking." So, Joe continues down the list until he has a complete staff that are happy about selling burgers and letting customers smoke. With everything ready, Joe opens the doors to his cafe. After a month, he has acquired a clientele who like his place. Joe is happy; the staff is happy; the customers are happy. Vegetarians go to their favorite places (Bob's, Rita's, not Joe's), non smokers go to their favorite places (Pearl's, Mike's, not Joe's) and everyone is happy. Then you come along with some police officers and say. "I'm sorry, Joe, we all voted and the majority decided that cafe owners should no longer have a free choice on thier smoking policy. Everyone has to do it our way now." Joe scratches his head and wonders when the Vegetarians will show up. I guess it all boils down to this: you either see society as a collection of individuals or as an individual collective. Both perspectives have consequences. Personally, I believe the former is healthier, safer and more 'human'. The latter has a tendency to convert society into a clean, efficient termite colony. Linden Lab has chosen Disneyfication. Those who speak out against Disneyfication (including myself) need to be honest and consistent if our arguments are to be taken seriously. For example, I am in favor of permitting consenting adults to engage in sexual age-play. This presumes, of course, that LL seeks to restrict SL to adults. I personally don't have an interest in age-play, but neither do I have an interest in roleplay in general. You either allow people in a virtual world to do what they want or you form a committee to regulate all behavior according to an arbitrary and subjective formula. In the case of Second Life, the 'committee' is the Board and senior management of Linden Lab. My core argument is that by choosing Disneyfication, Linden Lab will convert Second Life into a very different society than the one it first encouraged and exists today. My concern is that Second Life is on the road to becoming a virtual termite colony.

tolerance is a social construct. It is not innate to human behaviour. I remember reading a research article a few years ago that assessed the impact faces have on anxiety levels and it turns out that a face outside your "race" will trigger an unease (I'm paraphrasing here, it's been a long time since I read it).
We're moving to a risk adverse society which means those fought for tolerances are being reduced.
How many kids are allowed out to roam these days? When I was little during school holidays I'd go out after breakfast and spend the whole day roaming around with my friends, only popping home for lunch.
Now how many people allow their kids to do that?
Slapping laws on is easier than teaching people to be risk aware and in every facet of our lives we're seeing the impact of this.

From: Ciaran Laval This whole idea needs to be stopped. No direction, no definition, no forethought, no clue.
Really, it's an epic fail yet again, it was an epic fail in 2007, it's an epic fail now. Go back to the drawing board. Imagine that: some corporate bastards will teach me what is moral or not and they want to protect us ROFL This entire fascist idea to ban freedom of speech and expression will fail. Linden Lab is a failing company. Are you afraid of what will happen in a few months? Don't worry anymore, in a few month this funny company will no longer exist. They dare to tell us that naked avatars are some sort of heavy perverted practices. Nobody can treat those ignorants serious anymore. This is the end of LL, but this is not the end of SL. It is just the beginning for us. Now you can ban me for telling the truth.

my partner and i decided to buy some land just over 2 years ago,
it has almost killed us financially.
we had VAT added at 19% the gambling ban the open space bait and snatch the zorkmids crap where even the lindens didnt agree with eachother and now this, we are going to lose out again as we cant provide land for "adult begaviour" as to do that would lose our "mature behaviour" clubs andwould alienate some people from out land.
we are investing not 1 penny more and are actively looking for ways to cut our losses and get out of it. SL is on its way out. there are alternatives waiting in the wings and getting more advanced than SL every day (see openlife and SSO's for example), once the exodus starts it wont stop until LL is dead, good riddance to it and all of LL.

Does LL understand the difference between:
* open-mindedness vs. barbarism? * consenting-adults vs. slave-drivers? * violence vs. expression?
* sex vs. sexuality? * pornography vs. sensuality? * rape vs. love-making?
* nudity vs. nakedness? * nude beach vs. naked beach? * nude art vs. naked art?
* sin vs. crime? * lust vs. pre-meditation? * thought vs. action?
* sex vs. gender? * sexual orientation vs. sexual preference? * humanity vs. animalism?
* vulgar vs. distastefulness? * perception vs. reality? * deception vs. honesty?
* fear vs. projection? * anal vs. anal-retention? * sensible vs. dogmatic?
* entertainment vs. real life? * customers vs. money-bags? * SL vs. RL?

Personally, I believe the former is healthier, safer and more 'human'. The latter has a tendency to convert society into a clean, efficient termite colony. As a smoker i prefer and always have preferred to sit in an area where i don't have to inhale smoke as i eat. I also hate it when people light up cigarettes halfway through a meal like in between courses. What about people that do not smoke should they be exposed to secondhand smoke with all its dangers? That parallel is not one i would draw alongside this issue, lives can be lost to cancer and those that chose not to smoke should not be subjected to those that do unless they so choose imho and that includes all public places. We all know the dangers and Joe was stupid for not considering all in his choice to make a great eating place safe for all I think the public place smoking ban was a long time coming especially as we all know the dangers with smoking. My core argument is that by choosing Disneyfication, Linden Lab will convert Second Life into a very different society than the one it first encouraged and exists today. My concern is that Second Life is on the road to becoming a virtual termite colony. I am not going to touch on the sexual age play you mention, i run a RL adult business and find this type of play not right for SL, as we all know how many here, blur the edges of reality and fantasy. However what i will say is that SL is LL own creation for them to do with as they please and if that includes getting rid of all adult content and changing SL as it now is, then that is up to them. I will just leave and look elsewhere for another company if and when it happens to play a similar game. It will be a sad day for many reasons but its not the end of the real world, it will be just because a company didn't listen to its most important feature and that was us the customers, but in saying that whats not to say that is the final goal to have a squeaky clean grid as none of us really know what LL intends to do with its own company.

From: Alexander Harbrough I don't underestimate the efforts some will go to to 'protect' us from what they do not understand.
which is very sensible. Unfortunately there are too many people in the world with too much time on their hands and an over inflated sense of their moral worth. I remember a so called "civillised" part of the world where the government introduced a law banning public assemblies of more than 3 people. one of the things people forget is that each freedom has usually been campaigned for. Without vigilance it's easy to have freedoms whittled away for spurious reasons. the poem attributed to Martin Niemöller is correct but people being people they just don't heed it until something affects them.

From: Deltango Vale Then you come along with some police officers and say. "I'm sorry, Joe, we all voted and the majority decided that cafe owners should no longer have a free choice on thier smoking policy. Everyone has to do it our way now." Joe scratches his head and wonders when the Vegetarians will show up.
Probably when someone discovers the hazards of second-hand carnivorism.

Land of the Fear

From: Couldbe Yue How many kids are allowed out to roam these days? When I was little during school holidays I'd go out after breakfast and spend the whole day roaming around with my friends, only popping home for lunch.
Now how many people allow their kids to do that?
Slapping laws on is easier than teaching people to be risk aware and in every facet of our lives we're seeing the impact of this. Sadly to say that this is only a phenomenon in the American society. People don't raise kids up like that in any other parts of the world. People want to guarantee everything in life (at least that is what they think). They want guarantee that their child will never fall. But if a child never fell, how could you expect a child ever learn how to walk? The lawyers want guarantee that LL will never be sued for anything, and cover their behind for any remote possibility of getting sued by some deranged users who might accuse LL of allowing sex and violence in SL that LL will be liable for. By the same token, parents in the U.S. never allow their kids to go outside and play alone anymore these days because they are afraid they are committing a crime and be imprisoned for life for child-abandonment and child-endangerment for leaving their kids alone without adult supervision. This is a by-product of the warped legal system in the U.S. that everyone is living in fear of committing a crime of negligent. The lawyers fear getting sued. The parents fear getting jailed. The companies fear getting shut down. Welcome to the land-of-the-fear! Did I say land-of-the-free?

They do I'm afraid. Australia and it's becoming more prevalent in Britain too. Perhaps it is an anglo-saxon disease.

From: Lord Sullivan As a smoker i prefer and always have preferred to sit in an area where i don't have to inhale smoke as i eat. I also hate it when people light up cigarettes halfway through a meal like in between courses. What about people that do not smoke should they be exposed to secondhand smoke with all its dangers? They go to Mike's or Pearl's. Couldbe Yue and I go to Joe's. Everyone is happy.
