From: Morganna Reggiane Despite our differing views I suspect it's because we're both Canadians that we accept that some "freedoms" have to be limited so that the society as a whole can function and grow. I may not LIKE the changes, I at least accepted them when it seemed LLabs was targetting extreme content such as dolcett. Where I became opposed was when they stepped into the murky, impossible waters that cover the huge range of of "normal" human sexuality and what happens between consenting adults.
Whatever the prudes may choose to think...BDSM, bisexuality, homosexuality, fetishism and roleplay have been and are still within the "norms" for pretty much all societies, past and present. As a cultural anthropologist I could quote endless ethnographic studies and cases but really who cares? Deal is done and SL is going to join Palacechat, Roomancer, Active Worlds, There, SimsOnline and the rest of the "virtual worlds" that have come and gone.
In Germany, they came first for the Communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist.
Then they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat.
Then they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, I did not speak out; I was not a Jew.
When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.
(Martin Niemoller)
Morganna Exactly! I'm homeless, I don't have any adult business to be relocated. Yet I speak out for their unjust atrocity. I don't engage in any of these outlawed behaviors, yet I speak out for the unjustice infringement of privacy info disclosure. This is part of citizenship and social responsibility. If we don't do our part, how could we expect someone do it for us?

These changes as they are currently proposed impact far more than just the BDSM community. My two closest RL friends are both practicing pagans and I have to wonder has LLabs consider the much broader implications for the SL pagan covens or groups which practice skyclad ceremonies and sex magik in sacred groves? What about the resurgent Goddess cults or historical builds which have the precept of "sacred prostitution"? Buddist temples which expose Tantric teachings and methods?
Beyond the whole issue of discriminating against lifestyles...they may be actually violating religious freedoms...
Morganna
Yep. I own Persephone's Grove (among other places) and this is an issue for me. My place is clothing optional, since some pagan traditions REQUIRE nude worship -- it is NOT optional for those folks. I also have out stuff for those who practice a non-symbolic Great Rite and ponyplay stuff for Lokeans and those who worship Rhiannon and Epona. I sent Blondin a notecard with my places and my visitor list maker showed he came by some of them (Persephone's Grove & the Merry Meet) -- I haven't received any feedback though, so I have no idea what is going on with respect to this. I'm presuming I'll be told to move to Pornodelphia, since sex stuff is out to use (including paradise blanket dungeons). I just hope I can get a nice rural-looking area, since I have a sim-and-a-half of land, most with a medieval theme for the builds. Persephone

A thought struck me this morning while I was trying to search for adult places that might be in the same boat as me and who might want to be a little pro-active and get ahead of the game by just going in on an island that we KNOW everyone on it is going to be adult rated, where we can have full rights to set our rating (once it because available) and not have to hurry to scramble and move.
The problem I had in doing this is that during this search I had all this "non adult" crap showing up in my search that was getting in my way and, frankly, offending me a little bit because it was showing me things that I have absolutely no interest in seeing right now!
<ahem> This might sound like a joke - but I am serious here.
If people searching for only PG rated things have the ability to do so, people searching for only adult rated things should be able to search for ONLY adult rated things as well. The search needs needs a "Include PG?" "Include Mature?" AND "Include Adult?" toggle.
Example, a lot of our customers are "Robot" fetishists - people who have a thing for robots/machines/mechanical sex devices. As of now it is VERY difficult for a person to find Adult Oriented Robot Fetish locations because you a inundated by "Scripted Gadget Shops" (selling alt-bots and land protector bots and visitor logger bots, etc), or places that sell R2D2 and C3PO avatars (trust me - NO ONE is turned on by either of those. lol) and so on.
This is one example, and I'm sure there are thousands more where one search term for a particular adult niche overlaps with a mundane non-adult thing - related or not. So, if the true goal here is to actually provide access to the content we want to see, it really need to go both ways. If the moral majority can filter out my stuff because they aren't interested, I should have the option to filter out their stuff. It's only fair - and it would really really really help a lot of the niche market adult vendors really target in on their market.

From: Morganna Reggiane All LLabs needed to do was ask it's own membership for how to apply RL "limits" on content and I'm sure they'd have had a much more fair plan.
My RL munch has a very harmonious and profitable arrangement with the restuarant where we've met evey 3rd Monday for the past 3 years. Our website clearly states that 19+ to meet the LCBO drinking laws and the common standards of behavior for a public venue...no fetish gear, no open displays of whips etc. They love us and they knew from day 1 what the Durham Munch was about and the type of ppl who would be attending. I am very open about my lifestyle and I wanted the venue to feel completely comfortable about us with no myths or misconceptions.
The fet party I DM'd in Toronto had very clear rules and every single person who attended had to sign a disclaimer at the door about the rules, Neither the owner of the hall or the cops ever had a problem with us and that event was very sucessful and LEGAL for almost 5 yrs. Sadly the current trend in the BDSM community is towards private parties and as I won't attend parties in homes of ppl I do not know...I don't play in public anymore.

Morganna I would be not surprised to see some of the so called Lindens there http://folsomstreetfair.org/every year if I would live in San Francisco http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folsom_Street_Fairand I would be not surprised, about all what a delegation of so called SL residents (customers) would find at the homes of some Lindens and about what we would find out about their individual lifestyles and their day - and night activities if we would go to "review" their places like this Blondin on a serious fact finding tour In other words: these people, from this obscure sect, wich was former known as Linden Lab, Linden research, inc. wich have their headquarter in one of the most sexed up city of the world - where nothing is zoned or outsourced on an island or to a separate continent... - - and where children are allowed, to see that... - are the very last ones on earth, who would have the smallest right or an argument or an authorization or a democratic legitimation to judge, censor, deplace, ghettoize, prohibit whatever. They are the bigotary in person, - much more, than the pope in Rome, who is sitting in the small Vatikan State - complete surroundend by the whole "sinful" Rome and doesn't complain. History saw much religious and political power and systems, wich tried to clean up the world, from their view. It failed in any single case - and if they would try, to start that in their own town, the crowd would throw them down from the Golden Gate Bridge in a second. It is kind of understandable, that they do no serious discussion here with us, because they know exactly, that they are kneedeep in their own morass of argumentation depths and they have their Pampers so full that I can smell it here 10000 miles away with an ocean between me and them - and they have no courage, to appear here and to try to deliver some serious arguments. It would be their intellectual Waterloo, Stalingrad and Vietnam - but the fact, that they avoid a discussion, is their intellectual Waterloo, Stalingrad and Vietnam too. These people, so much is clear and apodictic, would burn books and they would close museums and they would deplace people and they would build ghettos and they would punish dissidents, if they see a monetary and power advance in doing that. And so they do... Incognizable but true.

From: Morganna Reggiane Blondin already responded that my private residence will be considered an "adult build" and thus would be subject to forced relocation under these changes.
So no I am not even "allowed" to use my private gardens for my personal activities.
Still believe these changes are "fair" or "reasonable"?
Morganna I just don't get this at all. How can you be on the list when as long as I change my parcel description I'm fine? This is mindbogglingly ridiculous. Will you be around inworld over the weekend and would you give me a tour of what he said was wrong (if he did say anything - he wouldn't even tell me what word I needed to remove from my description)? Has anyone else been inspected? There can't have just been two of us so far.

I have been reading the posts here in the forums for a while, speaking out in the *I* am adult content group and figure it is time to post my personal views. Simply my opinions and thoughts. Feel free to ignore them, brush over them, or sweep them under the carpet as you wish. Or agree.
I am in fully in favor of adult content changes.
As a member of the BDSM community in SL, I think it is time that respect for those that do not share that interest be respected. I believe adults, even in Second Life need to be accountable for their behavior and actions, and show respect to others. SL being a 'simulation' does not grant carte blanche to selfishness, self-centered behavior when it infringes other people and decreases their level of fun. That is just rude.
I believe strongly in the right to live out your second life sexuality how ever you and another consenting adult choose to. The decision that adult verification is needed for that purpose, to allow such free expression and enjoyment, if the changes discussed can be implemented reasonably then it is for the good of all.
The moving of Adult (as opposed to mature) content to a specific region I also think is a needed solution in order to facilitate finding content if that is what is sought by the individual. I agree that finding AC unexpectedly on the mainland is not reasonable or fair to those that do not share the interest. I do not agree that the uninterested need to be shuffled off to a PG or teen grid, any more than Adult content should be placed in a 'ghetto' to use a loaded term, but I support the tough decision to create an Adult region.
Changes to search, when implemented, I also see as a positive goal. The terminology and methods will be worked out I am sure to eliminate a number of false 'positive' searches. An example: recently I went to a landmark advertising BDSM items. I think it was the one latex outfit they were refering to when advertising BDSM. The use of the anacronym BDSM in search has been overused to get hits in search as have many terms. Identifying those terms will force those wishing to get traffic to be honest in their advertisements as well as eliminate useless looking in all the wrong places.
BDSM by it's nature, which is all I can speak for as it is where my personal tastes lie, should be included in the realm of 'Adult'. Unfortunately, BDSM by it's nature can include everything from light bondage to body mutilation, blindfolding to branding, shibari, tattooing, piercing, humilitation, use of a sub by others sexually, use of pain devices, etc. It is solely based on personal tastes and the interests of the participants involved in the relationship. I sincerely hope that mature members of other communities (vampire, neko, hedonist, nudists, etc) are also looking at responsible definitions of behavior to assist in the content changes and sharing them.
Up until recently there was a group in SL which I belonged to which was aimed at discussing the upcoming content changes. There were a number of intelligent people whos voices have been silenced as a result of the chat being disabled by the officers who felt chat was being abused. I do hope those members continue to speak out, even if I did not always agree with them on every point of view as I am also sure they did not with mine.
Just a point of view...see you in SL.

Needs to be restated now and again

From: Blondin Linden If we succeed in the effort to provide clear definitions as to what qualifies as Adult content, this kind of ambiguity should be well mitigated. The only clear and objective definition of 'adult' throughout most of the world is legal age, usually 18+ All other definitions of 'adult' are subjective, arbitrary and problematic. Good luck.

From: Deltango Vale Then I reach for a real Kleenex and smile at my real BF who rolls his real eyes and shakes his real head at my silliness. Neither of us then go out into the street to whack people on the head with wooden swords.
Discussion of this topic is almost a major novel. If people weren't so susceptible to influences we wouldn't see the most ridiculous, unflattering fashions each season nor an unhealthy addiction to those gossip mags or that rise of the 'ladette' culture or any of the other things the herd do. I was reading an article the other day where a preschool banned all superheroes items from being worn and noticed an immediate behavioural change amongst the boys. While we've been sleeping the caravan has moved on though and it looks like we may be back to the topic in hand. From: Deltango Vale Reaches through your computer screen, feels around, almost knocks over your wineglass, runs her thumb along the edge of your cellphone, feels you snatch it away - damn, Blackberry too - places a Lindt truffle wrapped in silver tinfoil on your monitor stand, taps her fingernail cheerfully beside it then retreats.
/me reaches out for the chocolate and removes the foil and silently thanks SL for allowing me to meet and experience the kindness that flows through the human race.

Criteria for assisted relocation
04-11-2009 05:43
Wouldn't everything be so much simpler if LL would agree to relocate anyone age-verified on request? So we don't have to ask or worry whether we meet the criteria or not. If LL agreed that ppl who wanted to live in the new adult land had a right to swap land with the mature region it would avoid any nonsense about inspectors coming round to see how adult your build is.

My shop is 80% BDSM toys and 20% 'nilla sex beds. The only thing that is pg is a pair of candlesticks!! I have pics of naked women scattered throughout the shop and the vendors make it pretty clear that what the toys are. Anyone can come in and try the stuff out. By any stretch of the imagination I should be forced to move. Yet according to Blondin I'm fine, as long as I change this unidentified word in my parcel description. go figure as our American cousins say

K. sounds good in theory, except I refuse to expand Aristotle's coffers by age verifying though them. So I'd have to close down.

From: Couldbe Yue It's time for you to move to London, we're still rocking along nicely here.. I'll introduce you to so lovely people who you can have a bit of fun with They have closed down even major G-rated events here, citing 'policing costs due to rowdy kids.' Thankfully that civic regeme seems to have passed and some of these events are coming back. We still have a cartel of merchants with their own security guards 'policing' the downtown under the guise of being helpful to tourists. I have seen them berate or try to chase off anyone they so much as do not like the looks of. And then there was the attempt to shut down a gay and lesbian book store simply because of the name an nature of the store even though nothing they carry and nothing that was confiscated in any way involved anything that violated anything other than the sensibilities of some Customs officials. That had to go all the way to the supreme court to be reversed. I don't underestimate the efforts some will go to to 'protect' us from what they do not understand.

From: Morganna Reggiane Hell ya! You spend 16 hrs a day for a year to level a warrior up to the point where they're the perfect killing machine/agro magnet/meat sheild and then watch Sony nerf the whole damn class so that some tweaked poncey cleric or caster with a pet can replace you on raids and dungeon parties. Evercrack isn't "your world, your imagination". Evercracks ToS say "All your base is belong to Sony". Warcrack is the same way.

Yup, this is the starting point of all Utopias. A bunch of people get together and say, "Oh, what a wonderful world it would be if only everybody was X and did Y. Hey, let's create a perfect society by shaping attitudes and controlling behavior." History is replete with examples of such attempts, from Calvin's Geneva to Cromwell's England to Hitler's Germany to Pol Pot's Cambodia. All grew from the same desire for a 'better' society. The road to Hell is paved with good intensions.

K. I agree. Some people asked Blondin about that, because creativity is spontaneous by nature and can change every second. Nearly no one is fixated on a specific "rating", nor building, nor dress, nor behavior, nor anything. Some have plans in background to build or express this or that adult-like creation or lifestyle or art in future. To inspect minds and brains is impossible, wich makes it necessary and inescapably that anyone who want to go to Saint Ursula - ahm - to the "adult - continent" - should be able to do that for free and without bureaucratic trouble. Additional to that is an inspection only a momentary subjective snapshot and nothing more. One can change owned environment in a second, by building or rezzing something. Should we then call every time a Linden-inspector to review that again and again and again? Linden Lab and Blondin avoided an answer on this so far. But LL should hang a list out - a web formular - where everyone who want to swap should be free to enter the list to move over to Ursula and ready. No Gestapo methods needed (and not accepted).

How about "gorean only"... or "anime only" or "furry only" so people looking for Tuxedo Mask outfits or furry tails won't find wedding stores? Improving search is really important... they're using a google search engine, so why can't they give us google's advanced search... but not really relevant here.

I can smoke hash in a cafe (cool) but I can't have a cigarette in the same cafe (boring). You are also adopting the Puritanical attitude to sex that is sweeping the globe (with the exception of New Zealand). I give you guys maybe ten years before you're down in the gutter with the rest of us.

The road to Hell is paved with good intensions. There are extremes but then look at most western european countries (exclude the uk as it's got that puritan streak at the moment) most of those countries indulge in some social engineering. Living in a society means you can't have a free for all, there have to be some laws and restriction simply because there are some people who are incapable of playing nice. Whether we like it or not, some people are influenced by what they see or experience and living in the risk adverse culture we do these days the heavy hand of over reaction is quite common. It's easier than teaching people to critically assess things. as a semi aside, one of the most interesting things about that berkman report was one of the submissions. It seems kids are more concerned about online bullying than sex, yet it really hasn't been addressed by the final recommendations. That's the one thing that concerns me about the merge. SL is self selecting for sociopaths and other mental health problems and the kids will be exposed to it without the information to be able to deal with it and that makes them vulnerable.

From: Deltango Vale I used to visit Holland, but then you started getting silly. I went over a couple of days before the ban (hadn't been over for 12 months) and found it really odd to be able to sit inside and smoke. I can understand why the smoking fetish is gaining ground now. Amsterdam is cracking down on a lot of the more adult pastimes, it's a shame but tbh if it stops all those bucks night/yobbish weekender crowds that have been flooding it down the last decade or so then perhaps it's not such a bad idea. (yeah, yeah, I'm getting old and intolerant). Saturday night in the red light district actually reminds me a bit of a welcome area inworld. OK for 5 minutes and then I really need to leave the zoo sharpish.
