Some posts on here made it sound as if she didn't voice/cam with me within 10 minutes of talking I would go off and call her a GUY! This is very far from the truth.

Well just in case, I wanna assure that I wasn't speaking to anyone's post or to any one poster when I posted my own thoughts/ramblings as it may be. But just based upon things I have seen, heard and/or been told, in Second Life.

And for the 2nd time in a week I'm going to agree with Pep. *reaches for aspirin* I'd say a fair few of the 'relationships' in Second Life given the context, are mutual projection. But that may suit the people involved and/or their comfort level. And some are roleplay too where no one has the illusion it is real.

Then there are ones that cross over into real life at some point. I know a couple who are very down to earth about it all and commited both SL and RL though they met in SL. They have traveled and stayed with each other etc. They use web cam, same as any long distance RL couple might. But I consider them a RL couple first, SL just to talk to each other. (Interestingly neither seems 'role players'. Each modeled their av to look as like the real 'them' as possible. They do not go to rp sims. Not sure that has hidden meaning here but - interesting.)

I was speaking about people who 'demand' mic/cam either right away or within a short time of 'meeting' you in SL. Well anyone who demands something, anything past my own boundary/comfort level doesn't have my interest at heart so I have no problem saying no. :)

And I met my wife in a role-playing game I was running on a dial-up bulletin board in the early '80s. :)

Couldn't agree more. I like to voice chat. I do not deny that. If someone doesn't want to and I do not know them, then i will voice chat and type... or just type to be nice. It is beyond rude to force someone you don't know to voice chat... forget webcam. People need to respect the boundaries of others and when they are violated, that's when problems come up.

If I had got into a serious, loving relationship with someone in SL and they asked me to 'prove I was a woman' - I would happily do so - I would probably have already done so anyway, I like chatting on skype etc!

We all KNOW there are people in SL who are not exactly what they imply they are (in many ways).

There is nothing IMHO wrong with someone playing a different gender, age, body shape or whatever - heck, I doubt ANYONE has an avatar that is IDENTICAL to their real self.

But if you are telling someone you love them - then I believe you have a moral obligation to let them know if there is something about you that could affect their feelings for you. And being a different gender to the one you are portraying could obviously do that.

I have known far too many people how have been deeply hurt when someone they loved and thought was being honest with them later admitted to being a different gender, vastly older, married or whatever.

After all, which is preferable, setting yourself up as a particular 'character', and having someone say they love you, but you know there is something significant about yourself that you have (essentially) lied to them about...... or having someone tell you they love you when you know who you really are?

I once cared very deeply for someone in SL who had a sexy, young looking avatar. One day he told me that he was in fact considerably older than me. Did that make me like him less? No - I was thrilled that he had told me something that I know he doesn't tell everyone (he likes feeling young in SL, and why not?). I cared about him for who he was, his age didn't matter. But had he told me he was, say, 30, then later on (perhaps if we had planned to meet up?) told me his real age - yes, then I would have been very hurt indeed. I still treated him just the same in SL - he had a young attitude and his character matched his avatar very well :-)

Sure, SL is a fantasy world where we can all be who we WANT to be :-) Hey, I am not a sexy redhead in real life, would you believe? hehe But before you tell someone you love them, I strongly think you should be sure you have told them anything important that they need to know first - before you break their heart later on.

*gets off her soapbox and goes back to building*

This topic now makes me realize...

While I do use voice on occasion, and have no problem with it. I am most at home with text. I'd prefer to type. The extra little bit of time is invaluable to reducing all of the "ums"and "ahs" that are a distracting part of voice conversation.

But I have no idea how to webcam!

I have one built into my laptop. I have turned it on a couple of times, and saved a snapshot of myself. But for using it to communicate with someone? I don't have the foggiest idea how to go about it.

Kinda depressing when you consider I make my living in R&D in the IT industry.

Working in a field you know nothing about seems to be the trend nowadays. Why fight it?

Surely you are not implying that it's that easy to get a job in the LL Marketing Department, Brenda?

Pep (Now *here* is a sensible suggestion: Marianne has lost her rl job; LL *need* help; why don't they employ her?)

Probably not. Showing up all normal and stuff is probably the last way to get hired. Now if she were living in a refrigerator box down on the Embarcadero, she would probably make the next LL job fair.

A webcam is different from using your PC's camera to communicate with someone. The latter is a simple video phonecall, and nearly all internet calling services can do that - yes Yahoo Messenger, but also Windoz Messenger, Skype, Sightspeed -- for one to one calls I think all those are free.

A webcam takes your camera's video and posts it on a website for all and sundry to see simultaneously.

What the heck. Your first post ever is a advertisement to your club and you did not even put it in the proper section?

Back in my dancing days I worked with a "woman" who was always referring to "herself" in the male tense during emotes...

"/me runs his hands down over his luscious body blah blah blah"

I don't even see how it could be a typo even once!

Not only that, but such people are no fun.

(I do agree with the principle that if a close friendship or romance is in the offing, honesty about the demographic stuff is essential. But shortly-into-the-acquaintance Demands....not a good sign.)
