From: Elora Lunasea I'm always a bit suspicious when someone calls me some cute little feminine pet name like "Hun" right off the bat. Most females I know don't do this. Or at least, not the ones I'm friendly with but a lot of men I know do. One of those little things they can't seem to discard, a little bit of chauvenism which creeps through. Way common in parts of the U.S. South and around Baltimore (slightly different inflection). Don't like it when a woman calls me that either.

From: Ashe1 Writer Hey guys, found this over on the 'Fashion Feed of SL' Had me laughing a few times Top Ten Signs your Girlfriend is a Man, Baby! 2) She thinks you look really hot in a tail and whiskers I am missing something here. Are they saying Neko's are by default guys (or, women that like Nekos)? Women that like men with beards and wearing a full tux are, more than likely, guys? If second . . . I must change my skin and normal jacket. *scratches chin, thinking of new look; maybe something with eyeliner, and one of those arm-less undershirts; or put that sumo wrestler back on, the one that wears a tutu. ponders*

Ok, here's one that I'm curious about...
A female customer (Brazilian, and only speaks Portugese) chatted to me a few days ago. She was using a translator, and the chat was ok. At the end of it, she said, "obrigado", which means thank you in Portugese, except the in Portugal, that's what males say - females (and petrol pumps) say "obrigagda", with an "a" at the end instead of an "o". My immeditate thought was that it's a guy and he made a mistake. But then I wondered if everyone says "obrigado" in Brazil. I've been meaning to find out but, since this thread is here, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows - anyone know?
She was in again today, and exactly the same thing happened.

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto... I always thought it was a bastardization of "obligated"... go figure.

From: Angel Leviathan Yes in this exact forum. Regardless this thread is promoting prejudice against what must be at least 15% of the total population of SL. It amazes me that it's acceptable to some to constantly harass residents who choose to have an avatar that is not the same gender as their RL. It hints at homophobia, although often these virtual transgenders are not at all gay. This thread is offensive to human beings. Not really funny at all. I would say that someone has a persecution complex going on here.

Cristalle, I have heard the inverse: that "arigato" came from the Potuguese "obrigado".
From Wikicionario: "particípio passado de obrigar. No sentido de grato, agradecido, ..."
"past participle of to obligate. To be grateful, thankful,..."

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto... And to take things full circle why was Romaji invented in the 1540's in Japan? to be able to write to the early Portugese traders there ! Dang Portugese! they were everywhere!

I believe it is of Japanese etymology, not the other way around, because the word is so dissimilar from Spanish and other romance languages, and because some words were borrowed back due to their exploration.

a ha, http://www.bisso.com/ujg_archives/000457.htmlFrom: someone According to an old FAQ (for sci.lang.japan) that I found online, the use of arigatou predates contact with the Portuguese. I’ve tidied up the non-native English in the quotation below:
The word derivations are different too. Arigatou is related to arigatai ‘kind, welcome’ and arigatagaru ‘be thankful’, which conveys a grateful feeling for something that was done in favor of the one using the word. The first kanji is aru (有 Unicode 6709) ‘exist, happen’ and the second one, gatou < katai (鞏 Unicode 978F) means ‘hard, difficult’.
