And to take things full circle why was Romaji invented in the 1540's in Japan?

to be able to write to the early Portugese traders there !

Dang Portugese! they were everywhere!

I love the things I learn on the forum!

i really never cared for Hun or babe or sweets or anything but my name when i first meet anyone..
i don't care if they are male or female..it just feels like you are tossed into a group with others instead of being recognized..

after knowing the person i don't mind it much..

Oh, I'm from the south.

So far south Paul Hogan's a northerner. *

(he was born at 29° 26′ S, I was born at 37° 48′ S)

Melbourne? I looked it up on Google Earth. :)

That's cute! Or the French "mon petite chou", "my little cabbage" lol. I love that one.

nononononono
my mother used to call me that.. and my granny (mothers side) told me babies came from cabbages.. (women went out and picked them when they needed them)

And then.. one day when we were visiting europe.. and family ... someone served stuffed cabbage...

I was about 7 but was massively traumatised.. just went off screaming about how they forgot to take the baby out.

One thing i hate more than anything is being called 'dear'... to me it sounds patronising.

now for the tell-tale signs.. noobie gurlz in chaps with gynormous bazoombas, big hair..... and legs up to their armpits.

men tend to tart themselves up like a RealDoll (TM)

Don't go into a diner in the New York Metropolitan area then. Hon, Sweetie, Dear, they are all part of the waitress lexicon.

i was mainly speaking about sl..
RL you can tell by how it's said as to what it means..
those are common terms in the south in restaurants and just about any place as well..
i just don't care to be doing business with someone and them calling me babe or baby or anything other than my name..

I live in the South Eastern part of the US. At one time down here (years ago) it was very common for people to use terms like honey, sweetie, etc. That is less common now-but I have heard it in NY and New England.

However, it is still common among some older people. I frequently have breakfast or lunch in a cafeteria in a state capitol building in the SE US. The older women there always call me "sweetie" or something like that. At first, I thought that it was because, compared to them, I was a kid (mid 30's). But I have heard them also address high level older state elected officers the same way, so I knew I just had to get used to it.

In the building cafeteria where I work (large law firm) in the same city that would NEVER happen.

I alluded to this in another thread, up here in the New York area all you have to do is walk into any diner, coffee shop, even some neighborhood bars and hear those words used regularly.

I find "women" who come up to you and say hey nice **** or care to join me and my friend in a 3some are most often men.
If a guy wants to play a women fine but if your entering a r/s be honest.

People who call me hon, sweetie or dear are mostly older people, in real life and those who I get to know in SL. Is a generational thing more than a gender thing I think.

I use guys alot in real life. Is just a generic greeting like hey guys. And mates as well. Where you going? I going to hookup with my mates. Is a generational way of talking as well. Is cultural to maybe.

There's a very easy way to tell if you are dealing with a RL guy behind a female AV. After getting to know them for awhile, if they refuse to get on the mic or webcam (We all have mics and/or webcams).... GUY (99.9% of the time.)

Um, no. I don't do webcam or mic. I'm definitely female. And you can't tell from voices anyway, I'm frequently mistaken for a man on the phone.

I don't use my mic either. And I am definitely female, both in SL and RL.

I don't have a problem with cross dressers. However, I do have a problem with people who use an avatar of the other gender and are not honest with those they are having a relationship with, or even having a personal conversation with.

Someone suggested that women have a large wardrobe and change clothes frequently, while men wear the same thing all the time. That may be true. Most women on SL I know wear something different every time I see them. Most guys have the same thing on every time I see them. That is my male (both SL and RL) perspective.

I also do not like the idea of people of who pretend to be the other gender to be able to have sex with people of their gender. It is not being gay that I don't like; it is being dishonest.

i used to talk with my guild all the time on the mic when i played WoW..
but that was to hang out and have fun and run around WoW..
now mics and cams are to prove we are women or not..pfft
i'll never get on a cam or mic anymore just to prove who i am.. It feels degrading..

the few times i ended up doing it i felt like i was on display and being judged the whole time on performance..it felt like they were gonna ask me to spin around so they could have a better look..pfft..
I ended the friendships because after it was over i was so mad at them i only saw them as shallow people and wanted nothing to do with them anymore..
if people feel the need to be so sure and secure about it then they can go elsewhere for a friend as far as i'm concerned..
the whole thing is so one sided it's not even worth the time to consider anymore..

Sometimes between RL and SL I do not have a lot of time and I do not change clothes(in SL) for a week...and I am ALL woman. Good thing Avie's can't smell:)

But against popular opinion... I think voice is the best thing that ever happened to SL. It is so much easier for me to talk than to type..especially when I am busy creating. Or explaining something to someone and especially in meetings. If others do not want to use voice that is fine with me if they type...but it is nice if they can at least hear me.

I do have to say though that if I've known someone in SL for a long time that I do not know in RL and they never use voice...there is always a question in the back of my mind about that person. Not that I care if a person is a male or female...that is their own business. It does make me wonder though... This is just my own thoughts on the matter...and like I stated..I would have to know them for a long time for me to even think about it.

Not to take sides or anything, but it's an internet convention (amongst some of us who were in the generation when it came into being) to use asterisks to indicate italics.

To answer the question: it's because I don't like the sound of my voice, I never have, and on top of that it's wildly inappropriate for my character in SL and it sounds ten times worse over a narrow bandwidth connection.

And if someone insists on voice, well, I start having doubts in the back of MY mind about that person. Actually, no, that's wrong, I don't have doubts, I *know* they're a jerk.
