From: Briana Dawson Also.
I am pretty sure the default avatar size by LL is 6'10". I am not sure however. But i do know when i teleport - before i fully rez, my AvRuler HUD says I am 6'10" before changing to show my height of 5'6".
Anyone else know for sure? Yes. I measured the default female avatars a couple months ago and they range from 5'9" to 6'4" barefoot, according to Henri Beauchamp's True Height Detector and Comparator.

Does that use Agent height, or Prim height? I find the word "True Height Detector" to be awfully misleading. Especially since i have seen that wording used at clubs.

I am actually suspecting it does AGENT height since AGENT height is about 6" shorter than PRIM height - if i recall correctly.

From: Briana Dawson It is not illogical since they could have a plethora of logical reasons for making themselves 8'0". There is plenty of flawed logic out in the world.
With that said, it is however, not rational. Sure there are reasons to set the height to more than 80, but not in terms of looking like a person with size regarded as normal IRL.

From: Milla Janick Yes. I measured the default female avatars a couple months ago and they range from 5'9" to 6'4" barefoot, according to Henri Beauchamp's True Height Detector and Comparator. I consider that unusually tall. And yes RL would be my basis for that statement. Even in the US, the average height for women is something like 5'4"... In many other places it's much, much shorter. So any height restrictions are potentially very culturally-biased. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height#Average_height_around_the_world

I find the word "True Height Detector" to be awfully misleading. Especially since i have seen that wording used at clubs. It compensates for the agent height inaccuracy.

From: Sindy Tsure I throw short people who refuse to put in their profile "18+ in RL/SL" or "short but adult", or some indication that they're not a kid even though they're a foot shorter than everybody else, out of my place on a pretty regular basis.
Ask me how tired I am of people accusing me of height discrimination or about their rights on my land or about how tall they are in RL or about how they shouldn't have to waste the time to update their profile or how they should be able to go anywhere they want or.. /me makes the universal blah, blah, blah movements with her hand.
You have no rights on somebody elses property. Zero. They can throw you out for not having the right hair color. Or if they don't like your shoelaces. Or if they just feel like it.
You have every right to decide rules for who is or is not allowed on your SL parcel. You have no right to mislead people about LL rules, nor do you have a right to be immune from accusations of height discrimination. I'm not saying that you've done so explicitly, but there are enough people who believe that it's against the rules for a 5'6" av to engage in adult activities that you need to be careful to avoid contributing to that misconception. Make sure your rules are posted, and include something along the lines of "Yes, we know that merely being short doesn't necessarily mean you're a child av. However, we've chosen to implement the rules this way because we have significant investment in this parcel, we don't want to take chances at losing that investment, and our rules are more objective and easier to understand than LL's, even though they're stricter and less flexible." And don't say you shouldn't have to do this. If you believe others should have to put notices in their profiles to explain themselves, then you have the same obligation at your parcel to explain yourself.

Yes. I think it is rather sucky to have to put in my profile that i am 5'6" and NOT a child avatar because of the ignorance, intolerance, and/or laziness of others who choose to not look at me and see 700 freaking prims worth of face pierces and over 80 body tattoo's - and yes, even when some look at me, i still get told i look 13-15. But now i am suspecting that this is the angle gross perverts that like underage girls take. They tell you that you look 13-15, etc, and then if you say "do you like that?" they of course respond - Yes.

From: Milla Janick I wasn't arguing. I was pointing out that you were wrong. Which you figured out later on when you said: Since we talk here about HUMAN shapes, it's quite obvious that my statement was related to human shapes. The latter statement as response to Briana is only a more detailed clarification on that. You now got the point or should I be more precise for you?

And the piercings and tats should be a good clue; in most places you gotta be 18+ to get those, yeah?

It would not hurt if LL would put a foot/meter scale on the appearance tools instead of a percent scale. It begs the question "80% of what?" Putting this in meters would allow users to make an informed decision about how to set their avatar height. They may still be short are tall, but at least users (especially new users) would know what they were setting for, and extremes of scale would be a decision, not an accident.

Green Life Emerald viewer has this, though it is off an inch - it is better than nothing.

This is so silly. In RL 'western' society many who are still children can be over 6' and many adults are well under 5'. It's strange that people come here from a RL where they know that perfectly 'normal' humans come in a huge range of heights and shapes and sizes, and it's mostly all accepted with nobody blinking an eyelid. Then they join a fantasy virtual world where they can be and have almost anything they can imagine - and here they insist (or some do) on trying to impose a narrow range of "fantasy-normal" on everyone else. Odd that. In clubs or 'adult' themed areas I can understand the owners being wary of griefers but that doesn't excuse just assuming a kid av on nil evidence, or being rude, or kicking people out for no other reason than being on the shorter end of the spectrum. -- Aes

From: Briana Dawson What Sindy said was: ... No mention of "adding up all the pieces of what they represent".
Overall what i see in this thread is a lot of ignorance, and laziness. Of course I don't just base it on height. The end-all question I ask people is "if a Linden saw you, would they believe you are +18?" And it's not paranoia. I have chased kids out of my place on more than one occasion.

There are a variety of height detectors to help you. The True Height Detector and Comparator I mentioned earlier is available here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Hunburgh/73/154/55There's a similar one (along with an agent height detector, so you can see the difference) in the Avatar Proportion Kit you can find at the Forum Cartel Hangout: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Allana/162/50/37

Last i checked - males who are 6'2" are taller than 92% of the rest of the population. So no, there is not "many" who are still children and can be over 6'. And your statement about the "fantasy-normal" is actually invalid since here in this world - we do lots of NORMAL RL things - like: build and live in houses, build vehicles to use, bicycles to ride, and many other things that reflect the normalcy of RL heights. Make an 8'0 avatar and go buy a flyable jet - then laugh as your head pokes out of the cockpit. So this whole notion of "imposing a narrow range of fantasy normal" on everyone happens not from these forums, but by the creators in SL. There has to be some semblance of standard for things to "look proper". But right now there is none. And right now, many people look just plain dumb. There is nothing wrong with proper proportions be you 4ft or 8ft - just expect to look funny.
