For almost 3 years now I've just been lurking around. Looking at the forums maybe once a month. Well today someone finally irked me off enough in world that I need to vent.
I have had the excact same avatar ever since about my second month in SL. Same shape, same skin, only the hair and clothes change. For over two years now, I've gone anywhere I wanted to, clubs, stores, gor sims, info hubs, pretty much everywhere in SL. Never once have I had an issue because of my appearance. My avatar is 5 ft 9 inches tall. I dress like an adult, I behave like and adult.
Well today I'm hanging out in one of the 'most popular' clubs. Just standing there trying to figure out what all the icons in Emerald's "Avatar List" mean.. not chatting not interacting at all just playing with my viewer. After about 5 minutes this giraffe with clown boobs in a dress comes over to me and says "You can't be in here with a child avatar." WTF!?!? I didn't go off on her(?) as much as I would have liked to, I simply said. I'm 5'6" (giving some error room for my height). She responded with, "well then you need to be that height in here."... at that point I almost spit out my drink. I told her, "That's my SL height. You are over 7 feet tall. If you want I'll give you a copy of starscape judge and you can measure yourself". Her response was "I don't play those games". At this point a tp'd out.
What a frigging moron. Definately the last time I go to a 'women' only club that has voice disabled. Let all the guys live out their fantasies with eachother. I'm going back to IOL where at least you can tell who the women are. And yes, after I left I pulled out SSJ and checked my height.. same as always, 5'9".
I think I will buy some land and auto-eject/ban everyone over 6'2".

I'm sorry that happened to you. No matter what height, people should be more polite.
I do want to comment on the whole height issue though. In SL you aren't 5'9" and she wasn't 7'. What I mean by that is that height is relative. If the majority of human-looking avatars are a certain slider height, then that's the new norm in SL. It doesn't correspond to real world distances how ever much people want to use that scale.
So yes, at "5'9"" by real world standards, you appear overly short. But that's your right and people shouldn't get bent out of shape about it. I don't blame you for being upset.

I hope you told 'her' that the only thing you find intolerable is intolerance.

From: Jehanne Talaj I think I will buy some land and auto-eject/ban everyone over 6'2". That sounds like a plan Sorry you had to deal with that; and your assessment of the situation sounds pretty accurate. I'm sure there are plenty of other places without such types. (As an aside, if that person wasn't actually in charge, you could complain to the management, if you felt it was worth the trouble.)

Are you sure that person even worked there? It may be worth the effort to send a notecard to the owner(s) to see what their take on the interaction was. Many times these sort of 'dancefloor conflicts' never reach the people in charge and the frontline staff or the regular patron takes actions that go completely against the policy of the venue.
I always ask staff to send me information on conflicts and the names so I can follow-up. This stops the staff from using personal vendettas to attack people and also helps me in speaking to the patron that was involved in the drama.

I don't want to play the numbers game. Just because the "norm" is 7 feet tall right now doesn't make it right. Without standardization, the numbers are subject to inflation. Today the norm is 7 feet. Tomorrow, a bunch of people join SL and decide they want to be a bit taller than the norm. Next week, the new "norm" is 8 feet. Before long, anybody whose avatar is not maxed out on height is judged a "child avatar". We have standards for a reason. Jehanne, I sympathize with you. As a career dancer who has worked at least a dozen clubs over my lifetime, I have never encountered the sort of behavior from my fellow staff anywhere I have worked, and hope I never do. I am sorry you experienced what basically amounts to ignorant arrogance, and wanted to assure you that we're not all like that. FWIW, I hope you had a good talk with that person's manager or the club owner. Very few clubs that employ people with such attitudes and let those attitudes run unchecked survive for very long, and most club owners know this.

Welcome to the new paranoid adult-but-not SL, where the clueless and ignorant will become more obvious every day.

From: Briana Dawson Uh. No. Um yes. I know you have your pet project on height, but Any measurement system is arbitrary. I'm not going to debate the issue with you because it's been hashed over 1000 times, but Sufficed to say, your opinion isn't the be-all, end-all on the subject. LL's scale is based off the one used in Poser, and it was flawed from the beginning. you can read tons of threads debating the same issue in the Renderosity.com forums, going back over 10 years. It's one of those things that will always have people on either side of it. To the subject at hand, unfortunate, and if that person was an employee, they certainly could have been more tactful. But as a former adult Business owner, I know that one has to be careful about appearances, especially when sexual content is involved. I don't know if the club had any, but I suspect it may have.

There is a standard unit of measurement hard etched into the very foundation of Second Life. This is clearly visible from the editing window, land size is also measured with this unit, even the physics engine supports this if you want to get picky. None of the this is an opinion. Avatars can be accurately measured, this is a fact. Most simply do not bother.

Wouldn't that be groovy if everyone in SL was building with an 'arbitrary measurement system'??? how the hell is the measurement system arbitrary when everything in SL uses the same measurement standard? Whatever. Nothing arbitrary about it.

I would have told the giraffe to meditate a bit over the height-slider in the edit appearance window.
Any height the slider can create is legal, legitimate and allowed. Just that simple it is.

I guess everyone creates their own reasons after the fact. Kinda like when someone trips in public they turn around and blame the wet floor or a crack. Here was the reason you referenced (I am sure that will change now however): http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/05/11/congress-awaits-ftc-report-explicit-content-virtual-worldsAnd yet another opinion: From: Sling Trebuchet The action seems a bit premature. Going by the references quoted: 1. The US Congress required the FTC to report on the general question of access to explicit content in virtual worlds 2. The FTC are due to report back in December 2009 3. The FTC attorneys interviewed by virtualworldsnews.com "seem much more open-minded and cautious in their approach than Representative Kirk. They're on a fact-finding mission, not a witch hunt. They told me they wouldn't necessarily be pushing for a law enforcement hike, just making general recommendations." http://www.virtualworldsnews.com/2009/05/ftc-reporting-to-congress-on-virtual-worlds-kids-and-explicit-content.htmlIt would seem that *if* the US Government are going to impose restrictions on explicit content, then the earliest it would happen would be sometime in 2010, after the FTC submits a report for them to consider. It appears that the report will not be making specific recommendations for legal moves. It may be that the report will inject some facts and sanity into the posturing. And i was actually stupid enough to feel bad: /327/96/320462/1.htmlFrom: Darien Caldwell Everything I do is well thought out, and based on my own reasons. I never panic. Yea..because that is how you roll...

/me yawns.
I throw short people who refuse to put in their profile "18+ in RL/SL" or "short but adult", or some indication that they're not a kid even though they're 3 feet shorter than everybody else, out of my place on a pretty regular basis.
Ask me how tired I am of people accusing me of height discrimination or about their rights on my land or about how tall they are in RL or about how they shouldn't have to waste the time to update their profile or how they should be able to go anywhere they want or.. /me makes the universal blah, blah, blah movements with her hand.
You have no rights on somebody elses property. Zero. They can throw you out for not having the right hair color. Or if they don't like your shoelaces. Or if they just feel like it.
Maybe people would like you more if your profile didn't make you sound so bitchy, OP?

Can someone help me sort out at what height on my backside I need to tattoo: "You must be this tall to ride"? (Cause LL's policy seems to be ya gotta be XXXX tall to play if you're human but hey go ahead and XXXX a donkey if the mood strikes you )

I think you just hoisted the flag of bitch over your own head. I wondered how long it would be before someone attacked the OP. Her profile has nothing to do with the matter and you used it simply as an excuse to attack her. No one cares about your Shemale Palace except other guys who play girls in SL with a cock so add me to the ban list for whatever reason that comes across your brain. And maybe I would not have responded if you did not sound so bitchy, Sindy.

Jehanne That sure is height discrimination. For what I've seen inworld, an avatar's height isn't the most obvious way to point out an child avi. If this was a person from the club itself, then I'd say don't return. (Don't take below text too seriously) Only one remark on your last line: Autoban me right away. I cannot meet the 6'2" max rule even if I did scale my avatar down to my rl height. /me Feels rejected by as little as 1 inch.
