Maybe I need to purge my LMs and start over...Never thought about the shoe store angle. You have given me food for thought. Dolls and dress-up are traditional and stereotypical female activities, so maybe I need to rethink my assumptions on the man's world comment. BTW, Seven is my lucky number...

I was under the impression that truth doesn't matter. Regardless, I think Scylla, like many people, misunderstand the difference between gender bias and gender confusion. Perhaps I am stuck on a fantastic ferris wheel and all I can see is the imaginary landscape beneath me, unpeopled and colorless. What would SL be like if the electricity grid ceased to exist? Would the human condition be irrevocably altered?


Hi Twilight, What Scylla is true 'for me' and I agree with her points. Everyone doesn't have the same truth. Someone who only spent time in the types of sims you list, would probably agree with you that those are a major part of SL. I don't, and so, I don't agree. It's not my truth. Actually I have 'never' been to a BDSM sim, at all, have only seen places in Search when looking for something else. It's like, once I wanted to know if the candy, Milk Duds had a real chocolate covering, or was it carob? So I googled Milk Duds and found porn sites. It's all in perception, you'll find what you're looking for. Besides the consumer-ism (shopping, dress up dolly, etc) I find the disabled residents of SL, new and old, needing help, or just needing to connect and try and do that for them, or guide them to someone who can. That's 'my' SL, my own predictable experience. As for my comment to Scylla, was just an old joke, sorry for any confusion..

SL is predominantly a WOMAN's world. In SL, women have the advantage. Statistically speaking, women are better with words than men, and SL puts a premium on literacy. In SL, there is no size or strength advantage for men. Women are more likely to be spoken to, to get a cordial reception, to be trusted. Because we don't depend on the SL economy to feed, clothe, and house us, women are not subjected to second class economic status in SL. There are many more SL jobs open to women than men. The negative consequences of casual sexual liaisons don't pertain in SL. (Physical consequences, I mean, like STDs and unwanted pregnancies. There are still plenty of emotional consequences.)

80% or more of the content in SL is created for women. (Well, it is in RL too, I suppose).

Quite a few men have recognized the inherent advantages SL gives to women and use female avatars...a much higher percentage than women using male avs.

I think that SL has done more for Women's Lib than all the feminist ranters. Thanks, Phil.

Yah, every time I turn around there's another story. I don't recall if it was last night or night before but there was this big deal about another 911 call from Tiger's place. Then they showed picture of mother in law, who had been with wife during these troubling times (along with twin sister of wife), in a wheeled bed being wheeled into hospital.

Naw, I think she just had a tummy ache, nothing to do with her son in law. She's the governor of a place, in Sweden. Of course the media had to grab onto it and make it look like some kind of bad reaction she had to her son in law's current troubles. I'll be it wasn't hooked up at all.

Geez Lexxi. I thought caressing the mind was a good way to keep it from becoming stale and stagnant. SL sure beats (no pun intended) crossword puzzles or the painful concentration of chess...

Oh stuff and nonsense.

Physical strength matters less and less in RL, and not at all in SL, and (sorry) that's the only conceivable area in which men are "stronger."

And as I believe that men are also victimized, albeit in more subtle ways, by a patriarchal system, they are hardly more "in control" than women. We need to stop thinking in terms of individual men and women, and more in terms of gender as a cultural construct.

Interesting observations Lindal. The fact that "80% or more of the content in SL is created for women" only proves that the predominant force here is male. Women's Lib has done more to "vaginize" the American male than it has in liberating women from the misplaced preoccupation with sexual equivalence. Anyway, on the literacy issue, I can agree with your comment that women are better with words if you will agree with mine that men are better with numbers...
