From: Kitty Barnett I'm the little washed out white blot on the far left in the distance... you can keep on finding excuses but you're not going to convince me that a whole room full of people should look like bleached out ghosts just because some people are so vain that they *need* to prance around with facelights and be eyesores to everyone else. I could barely stand to stick around long enough to take that picture, it just made my eyes water having to put up with that. Minor annoyance . Fair enough, that is pretty intense. Nothing worse than vein facelight prancers, lol. This would be very inconsiderate although I really don't think most of the people who are doing this have a clue. Doesn't hurt to tell them its a little bright, i would suggest a more low keyed facelight if they were my friend.

well, its a private sim atm, and everything there is mine, so yes i do know where every local light is at. and even if there were 20 local lights i would always see my own noselamp. yes the noselamp is there. its a soft blue light. the point is that not all noselamps are supernova, more people wear them than perhaps you realise. so give us a bit of peace hey.

You know who else had a nose-lamp? Huh? Rudolph! That's who. He wasn't allowed to play reindeer games - just think about that, folks. Just think about that.

From: Nina Stepford and even if there were 20 local lights i would always see my own noselamp. If there's a static light with intensity 1.0 and a 5m radius at 1m distance then your facelight would need a radius of more than 3m to not get sorted behind the static light (the radius needs to be higher still if it has an intensity lower than 1.0). Similarly a static light with a 20m radius that's 15m away from you would get sorted before the two examples above. It's quite easy for a subtle facelight to get drowned out, it's not only the distance from your avie that matters but a combination of intensity, radius and distance. If you want to make sure a light is actually being used to light, select since that will give it a considerable boost. (Related: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7587)

When I'm with an avatar blinging up my viewer I just mute them and then turn on Show Muted Text in the chat window. They see themselves as they want too. I see the surroundings as I want too. And we carry on chatting away like normal.

To each their own exactly. to each their own. yet this subject comes up like clockwork, so i guess it is a huge issue to many. i cannot speak for anyone else, but my i consider my ava to BE my first build, and like any other builder, i want to show her at her best. as i posted earlier, the facelight i use now does not wash out my ava or the surrounding area. what may work for one person, may not work for another(different monitor specs, graphic cards, etc). i say let this die, as i will continue to wear my facelight. heck i bet many of you i met inworld didn't even know i HAD one on(unless you were rezzing right next to me).

Nina and others,
Please don't get defensive when I post this. Please understand that when I talk of baselines and rudeness, I'm *not* talking about the somewhat subtle lights you have one. These are not, IMO, the issue here.
I'm talking more about the sort in the photo by Kitty Barnett in this thread. I've seen many like this. Some have no idea they''re that bright. Some have bad monitors or otherwise "challenged" graphics, and it is "good to them." Some are just as angry at those who dislike their facelights as you seem to be to me even when their lights wash out half a sim.
Like anything, there is a value to subtlety. Your light fits that as much as the Mysti implant light I use from time to time. The point is, much like bling and glow, not everyone does subtle.

see, i can appreciate that, but these threads always have people in them claiming that i am selfish for using one of the six local lights. they demand ALL of them, and me using one is selfish then there is the crowd that claim that i destroy the ambience of their water features 6 lamp lighting, etc etc. then there are the people that equate noselamps to bling, or to script lag and imply that anyone that uses one is a noob. then there is always a patronising group pointing out windlight settings or teaching us how to adjust the brightness/contrast on our monitors. THAT sort of condescending commentary is what heats these discussions up. From: Marianne McCann Nina and others,

so how does one go about 'toning down' their facelight settings?
for example, the settings the nose lamp level that Nina is wearing?
maybe we should inform the amsses instead of argue with them.

maybe we should inform the amsses instead of argue with them. I don't know that you can, I tried w/ presets, people; masses weren't biting and I still use my face lights half the time. So you get a few ppls to change or think to be polite, you still have hordes of users who will ignore your advice. It's like any attachment or exaggerated body part or sim hogging script baring/wearing wanderer. It's a pref, an opinion or ppls don't care even if informed.

I would say if someone has a facelight that is too bright and it is getting on your nerves problem can be solved by just letting them know. I really think that the people with the overly bright facelights have no clue and are just innocently trying to enjoy themselves and enhance their look. So why not just tell them in private that its way too bright instead of staying quiet about it and then harboring this sort of resentment for facelight users. It would be doing them a favor and solve the problem for you too. I think its better to address it directly with the person instead of letting it turn into some sort of societial or community issue worthy of a public debate. (although I personally wouldn't think it was a big enough deal to risk hurting someone's feelings over)
And it seems like sometimes when people don't like something there can be a knee jerk reaction, sort of like with the statement: "I hate facelights and the people who wear them are vein, self-absorbed idiots!" To me this would be reactionary and is sort of a broad judgement of facelight users in general and rather unreasonable. The thing is, I agree that the high beam version can be annoying but that doesn't have to mean that facelights are a bad thing in general just because some people don't know how to use them properly. I am suspicioous any time people are having such powerful reactions to something like this without trying to work out a reasonable solution first. Its almost like some people either have to take a strong position or take no position at all.
The thing that motivated me to get a new facelight was that I have a friend with a high beam version and its like being blinded by the sun. Mine wasn't that bright but I wanted to make sure it was as subtle as possible after experiencing this!

Just as an aside to the OP: I don't know how much you've played with it, but the facelight I suggested has four light sources, which can be fun for pics but is probably overkill when just wandering the world, even if the overall effect is subtle. You may want to pump up the brightness on one or two prims and shut the others off...even on high, the individual prims aren't horribly bright, so you should be fine if you go that route.

From: Rhaorth Antonelli I think the best solution would be an option for show local lighting attached to an avatar (or not show it) so we would have moon and sun local lighting (would not show lights attached to avatars. only unattached lights) attached to avatar local lighting )would show all lights, attached and unattached) This should be added to the viewer and I think it would be relatively easy. I would probably always have attached light sources turned off. It would be much more helpful than changing the GUI from gray to light blue, making irrelevant changes to icon shapes, or making the Tools menu disappear when not in build mode. --Hugsy
