Much as I admire SL builders and the work they do, I simply don't believe they have some inherent right to all of the available lighting sources. You want to light your creation to the best effect? Great, so do I. Of course, in a scenic venue where lighting is important, I have no issue with being asked to turn my facelight off if I'm planning to stay more than a few moments, but I'm not going to leave what I consider a flattering addition off full time just because it might annoy someone, somewhere, sometime.

Oh, and btw, even though I refuse to use WL, I tested and adjusted my facelight settings in 1.19.1.4 when it first came out, then checked them again in a later RC. The effect remains subtle and Ann can in no way be considered a 'glowtard'. :p

Y'know, on a serious note, all this would be moot if lights attached to an av weren't visible by cameras more than 5-10 meters away.

Or if Windlight wasn't so harsh about shading.

or both

or an option on an av shape "soft shadows"

Or any of a number of other things no Linden developer will pick up 'cuz it doesn't pique their tao.

bolding is mine... this is the part that facelights could fall under if someone really wanted to push it... being that facelights do inhibit another resident's ability to enjoy SL....

(technically speaking)

Then again, that one part could be applied to just about anything... (before someone tries to make that point LOL)
lol, I'm SO tempted to Godwin.

Considering that in a large group of people, so many are wearing the dang things, yours might not show up to either yourself or some other people anyway thanks to the local light limitation! No matter WHAT viewer you use, other than the experimental shadow draft viewer.

And I don't care how subtle it is, you look stupid if your face is glowing and it's midnight. The glowstick lights start casting shadows that make everyone else look bad.

Agreed. To wish to monopolize resources while denying someone else the same resources, and claiming some moral high ground is a bit disingenuous. No matter what side you are on.

Agreed. Tards at movie theaters, for example.

That's a chestlight. What we really need is an example of a buttlight. (^_^)y

That Butt needed no illumination, back in the day. ;)

yes they tend to use the facelights as it will help smooth out the shadows
Unfortunately it ends up creating even worse shadows in *other* people who are within the radius of the facelight.

I'm continuing work on my facelight this evening. I found a .5m radius is more than sufficient.

As many people have pointed out, facelights are unfriendly in a lot of situations. Don't wear them in a crowded club, for example; either your light just won't render because of all the other facelights in the neighborhood, or you will overlight neighboring avatars, or you will destroy the effect of the mood lighting that the club uses. Also, high crowding = high lag, and every little bit of added rendering load just makes it worse. Even if the light itself is dropped, the viewer still has to deal with figuring out what to do with the transparent prims. I suspect that one reason that LL added an official transparent texture was to help that out; if the viewer sees that a prim has that texture applied to all faces it doesn't have to render it at all. (Hint; going forward, builders should try to use the official transparent texture rather than resident-created ones.)

I do wear a facelight when I am on the runway modeling, because the manager of the modeling agency likes them. I don't wear it the rest of the time, but I don't have a problem with people wearing them in casual social situations if they like the look. Please leave them home when you're in a crowd unless you're a performer there, like I am when I'm on the runway.

As for finding one that's not overpowering, the problem is that many facelights were designed before Windlight. On a pre-WL viewer, you can just keep pushing more light into a scene and it doesn't get any brighter; once you reach maximum, that's it. As a result, many lights were made much stronger than they needed to be, because nobody could tell the difference. With Windlight, more light DOES make a difference; you see areas of glare and washed-out colors. So to get the right look in a WL viewer you need less light, and you may need to adjust your lights depending on the time of day.

I believe the six-light limit is more of a hardware limitation than an SL one, if memory serves. Hence, I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Mari

It's a limitation of the OpenGL API. OpenGL implements eight light sources. SL uses two of them for its own purposes: one for the sun or moon and one for the overall fill lighting. That leaves six for other light sources.

Your conclusion is correct; it's not going to change soon.

The one I use for photography is made of 3, carefully positioned, 0.25 radius, 0.75 falloff, and the one in the center is slightly pink. (^_^)y

i made a background with a posing stand, and position 3 giant invisible lights on it, that i can move as needed. i don't, however, know how to adjust the lighting in each one to make it less bright and more subtle.

would you be willing to announce (here or PM) the numbers and RGB of each? if yes, thanks in advance. ;)

It's best when they're dancing.. I LOVE the flicker they bring to my screen and the grand mal that follows. Love it. Really. I do.

Come back again
I want you to stay next time
'Cause sometimes SL ain't kind
When people get lost like you and me
I just made a friend
A friend is someone you need
But now that he had to go away
I still feel the words that he might say

Turn on your face-light
Let it shine whereever you go
Let it make a happy glow
For all the world to see

Turn on your face-light
In the middle of a young AV's dream
Don't wake me up too soon
Gonna take a ride across the moon
You and me

(Sorry, it popped into my head and won't go away and I'll be damned if I'm suffering alone! :P )
