It's the heat from the facelights.

I'll be waiting for my new keyboard.

THAT sort of condescending commentary is what heats these discussions up.

You, commenting about condescending commentary? That's a hoot. Aren't you the one who came straight in and said something to the effect of 'if you don't like it, fuck off'? That's humble.

Most people don't have problems with subtle facelights. In fact, I'll say bravo at making yours seemingly useless in that picture, as it was so subtle that it wasn't even noticeable! No one is suggesting a ban on these things. They clearly have uses for photography and the pictures here (other than Kitty's) have shown really fantastic uses of them.

But would it really kill you to take it off in public places, especially at night or places optimized for midnight/low lighting? I read the SLU threads and the roleplay sim with the lowlight design was a prime example of someone's light screwing up the experience intended by the builder.

exactly. to each their own. yet this subject comes up like clockwork, so i guess it is a huge issue to many. i cannot speak for anyone else, but my i consider my ava to BE my first build, and like any other builder, i want to show her at her best. as i posted earlier, the facelight i use now does not wash out my ava or the surrounding area. what may work for one person, may not work for another(different monitor specs, graphic cards, etc). i say let this die, as i will continue to wear my facelight. heck i bet many of you i met inworld didn't even know i HAD one on(unless you were rezzing right next to me).

Preach it Sistah!

Honestly, as many times as I've seen you, I honestly never knew you had a facelight on :) Now I want to go out and get one of those nice soft ones. (Skims back through the thread for recommendations of nice ones.)

P.S.

The Irish Whiskey/Hot Toddy is beginning to work :)

so again.... all this bickering back and forth, yet not one soul has offered the settings so that willing facelight users can tone theirs down, and advise ppl they see along the way of these settings.

put out, or shut up.

Just as an aside to the OP: I don't know how much you've played with it, but the facelight I suggested has four light sources, which can be fun for pics but is probably overkill when just wandering the world, even if the overall effect is subtle. You may want to pump up the brightness on one or two prims and shut the others off...even on high, the individual prims aren't horribly bright, so you should be fine if you go that route.

.
Haven't had the time to play with it very much but I will have a look at this when I log in next, thanks

Czari, have you ever looked close enough for the light to matter? I mean, how often do you zoom in close enough to look at anyone for the light to matter?

I won't speak for Czari, but I spend more time looking at avs - mine included - in the normal course of a session than I do almost anything else. Even when I'm shopping or exploring, I take at least one close look at the avatars I encounter...it's the SL equivalent of people watching.

put out? lol

I think it depends on which facelight you're using, if you go with the one I bought that Ann recommended she has given some helpful info on it. Its menu driven and tweakable so people shouldn't have much trouble figuring it out for themselves, I would need to spend a little more time with it before I can start giving advice about it but at this point it has been as simple as using the dimmest settings possible.

i guess what i am asking is, 'how do you dim it'?

i have a fully modifiable facelight, and i tried to change the settings, but i could not figure out in the edit menu where/how to do that.

I think it's the Edit > Features tab if you're not using a menu-driven version like the FX.

From the edit window, click "more," then the "Features" tab (I think that's the name of it. I'm going my memory). You'll see lighting options here.

Color. Go ahead and keep this white.

Intensity. 1.00 is full intensity, and will usually wash your face out. I usually use between a 0.5 and 0.3, depending on how much visible light I need for a shot.

Radius. Pretty much what it sounds like. 20m is the maximum, but you really want a small radius. Under your tools menu, you can turn on "show light radius" and get an idea of how much area is being covered by the light. You'll probably only need a m or two

Falloff. how much the light's intensity decreases from its center. a "0" setting means there is no change is brightness from the center to the edge of the light. I'd suggest an average falloff, around 1.0 maybe.

The problem is, once the face light is tuned down below "obvious", the avatar rendering issues become OBVIOUS again because face lights compete with the existing environmental light (Sun and Moon) as secondary light sources.

Windlight has some great settings (namely, AMBIENT LIGHT) that virtually eliminate the bad shadows without washing out other features. Boost the ambient light, save the setting. You're done!

based on the above dimming formula, it really is going to depend on how close you are standing to said avatar.

I don't concern myself with dimming formulas. I have a Windlight setting that is consistent no matter where the avatar or camera is located, be that on another avatar (without a face light), or my own.

At the average populace, no. (Nor have I ever seen anyone enter a room that suddenly blinded everything in vision as some are saying happens.)

Now Maggie, the person to whom I was referring, yes...I have cammed in on her closely at several functions we've been at. (To look at new clothes, boots, hairstyles, etc.)
