I hear secondcitizen.net is the new killer app.

Hi, Coco! Yes, they will at some point lock these forums, but keep them accessible for reference. The new area will be similar to the Xstreet "Flog", though supposedly improved. Blue Linden spoke to that on this thread I started over there: https://blogs.secondlife.com/message/9979#9979 However, he has declined to say anything about when the change-over will happen. If you want to post in that thread, it appears that he is responding to concrete suggestions, but not to simple criticism. . Thank you Nika. I put in my two cents. coco _____________________

unless you are the type that agrees with pretty much everything everyone says, slu may not be the place for you.
slu = hive mind, lop-sided moderation, favourtism, certain ppl allowed to ignore rules, etc. i would give slu a miss. |

I'm one of the more frequent posters on SLU, though I can't say I've ever felt I belonged to a "clique."
I left this forum for secondcitizen.com back in the day, and it became apparent that SC was going to replace a lot of my in-world time. It was a wild, wild place, but as a veteran of the alt* hierarchy of Usenet, I was at home. I didn't try reading it at work ![]() Secondcitizen.net is trying to bring all that back, and I don't have enough time for it, but I wish them well. When the original secondcitizen shut down, most of us migrated to SLU. Now SLU *is* moderated (lightly) but the benefit of that is that there are a lot of threads with good serious discussion of SL and other virtual worlds, so it's a very good source of information. Cristiano's technical polishing of the forum has given it a high level of functionality I haven't seen anywhere else. Cristiano does try to keep SLU work-safe, although it's true that in any forum where people can post pictures freely, there's always a small risk of running across something objectionable before moderation can get to it. I tend to turn off pictures before going into certain subfora at work. YMMV. I would try reading it at home for a few weeks before reading it at work, just to be sure it's inside your comfort level. Any forum (that is not over moderated by a pack of nannies) has people who bite, but I don't find SLU to be too intimidating in that respect, and I wouldn't want to be in a forum where I was afraid to speak honestly, so the level of moderation works well for me. I'm also a regular in the infamous PR&S. The intelligence level there is very high and I always find out new info. All in all, I recommend it. |

Wow, that's so far from the truth I almost didn't bother replying. People disagree with each other all the time over there and very few feathers get ruffled, nor do you need to conform to become part of the "hive". Clearly different people have different impressions. _____________________

SC is a community project run by long-time Second Life players. SC administrators are not worrying about their own income or trying to protect their product for a possible future sale (like what happened at XStreet?). I think it makes a difference, and so do some former SLU members who were banned because of SLU moderation. At SC I feel like I am just talking to my friends instead of doing a political dance. I cannot be banned, everyone is an equal, even posters who I do not like. And, SC has all the functionality that SLU has except it lacks a products section. Also, very important, SC has the rusty screw driver button. ![]() |

Does it have to be a one forum to rule them all? It's not Highlander and I'm pretty sure there can be more than one
I visit a lot of different forums SLU, Second Citizen, ThatOtherLife, Slapt, even that *shudder* grotesquely mutated blogrum. And they all have different moods and flavors and favorites and moderation styles and people you love and people you love to hate. It's actually pretty cool that SL has grown out of a one-size fits all forum into so many vibrant forum communities. _____________________

It got so bad that I decided to leave when I was the target of attack and there were no official consequences. It wasn't worth it anymore. I know others have that experience as well, to a worst degree. SC is like the bar down the street where everyone knows your name and even the bar fights are fun.... |

sorry you disagree, but it was certainly my experience.
there are people that often find themselves voicing an opposing opinion, and i recommend to those people they give slu a miss and move straight to sc, where opposing opinions are welcomed. And some people will go to SC and find the same experience you described, that's how it works. Instead of recommending or disrecommending a site, why not just mention it without the commentaries and let pople try it for themselves? Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum, What might be right for you, may not be right for some. A man is born, he's a man of means. Then along come two, they got nothing but their jeans. But they got, Diff'rent Strokes. It takes, Diff'rent Strokes. It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world. Everybody's got a special kind of story Everybody finds a way to shine, It don't matter that you got not alot So what, They'll have theirs, and you'll have yours, and I'll have mine. And together we'll be fine.... Because it takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world. Yes it does. It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world. _____________________

I have my opinions and experience with SLU. I write; I delete; I re-word; I delete.
I will just end with saying SLU has a good following if you just want to find an active board. |

I've just been dabbling with the new Answers blog/forum, and I've just registered with SLUniverese.
My first impression of Answers is that the different structure will take some getting used to and that there are still things there that are unfinished. I doubt it'll be much use for conducting flame wars or for chatting among friends, but it does seem perfectly adequate a tool for asking for and offering help and advice about matters relating to SL. SLUniverse seems to be a forum much like this. The most immediately obvious difference is that it it offers a lot more options and functionality, and that it works properly. The content and population are perhaps a bit thin compared to here, but that will, I am sure, change with time. I haven't had time to asses the differences in culture between SLU and these forums, but it seems to cater perfectly adequately to my own brand of infantile sarcasm. I would expect that the inevitable migration from these forums will mean there will be no shortage of familiar names there, so celebrated posters here should not fear that once there nobody will know or care who they are. One suggestion: register your name there now, before someone else does it for you ![]() |

One good thing about the SLU software, you can choose to hide so much of it if you like. I have several subforums hidden so I don't even see them at all. it is very customizable, you just have to spend a little time tweaking it. I don't know how any of the other forums are in this aspect, but I'd imagine they would have simialr features since everyone uses current forum software....except for..... ![]() _____________________
