It saddens me that Linden Lab has gravely misunderstood
the great value of these forums, even in the current state of
their administrative neglect.

* * *

I could always count on finding quick answers to any question
here, especially difficult programming problems.

Or if I was having trouble logging in, I would check here
and within moments I would be comforted by others posting
saying, "SL is down for me too at the moment", thus relieving
me of thinking it was only my connection.

This community's strength, and something that can't be duplicated,
is its history. So many participants hail from the early days and
the forum has been running for years.

I always marvel at seeing someone's signup date. There's
some respect that comes with having a 2005 or earlier
timestamp.

Unfortunately those textual badges of distinction will be
unceremoniously tossed with the new "forum".

If what they have planned is anything like what they've
done to XStreet design-wise, oh well...

And from what I just read of the terms and conditions of the new
"forum" it's obvious they are not interested in reality; reality
in this case suggests being open to comments, whatever
they may be from the community they have created. Reality
being able to accept harsh criticism and open debate; to let
people freely voice their opinions. Linden Lab should be confident
and strong enough to support a truly Open Discussion Forum.
God, they would gain my total admiration immediately: me
and thousands of others. But they don't get it; and probably
never will. "It" being the will of the true core of the SL "cult" of
users.

Zindra is a perfect example of the way the decision makers
at SL are out of touch with SL users, for example sequestering
one of the most successful segments of the Second Life population
onto a distant continent.

Why does the management of Linden Lab so easily
and readily kowtow to the lowest denominator of feedback
they receive. For one "I was offended by a penis", there's
100 who say, "it's no big deal". But the one gets the vote.

* * *

Ok...that's a bit of rant...sorry. I'm going to derail my own thread
before it gets started! =)

This is what the thread is really about:

I would like to know from all you sages here: what are what
you think are active, been-around-awhile forums which would
serve as a good alternative to this one?

I've joined a couple in the past, but always ended back here
because of the deep cumulative experience of participants
here.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The most populated is SLuniverse. Great moderator, every thread you would ever need, good folks, good info and answers, good place to promote your businesses, good drama, good arguments. MUCH better functionality. There is an "ispy" page where you can see new posts as they are added. It even has streaming chat for those who has problems keeping their thoughts and comments to a minimum. And if you agreed or disagreed or wanted to thank me for this post, there's feedback buttons where you could do all of that and more.

There is a great, welcoming subforum for newcomers: http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/new-users/. Cristiano even has a subforum to discuss LL's recent decisions to mess with everything: http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/xstreetsl-discussion/

There are several good little ones, but SLU is where you will find the bulk of the SL community. And that's for a reason.

To top it all off, Brenda posts there! What more do you need to know?

Hi Raymond!

The most populated is SLuniverse.

Exactly what I was talking about! Ask a question and get a good response here.

Well...I took your word for it, and I just signed up over there, same name
as here, Infrared Wind.

Looks good so far. Thanks!

Still open for more suggestions too!

Cheers,
IW

I was thinking about the new bloggish format, and thinking of the guy yesterday who posted here so desperately begging for help with his 'dating' situation. That guy got a lot of good responses and advice here. I don't think that over there, there's even a section for a question like that, I wonder where people will post to get info like he needed. (especially #7, lol) I guess questions like that will just remain unanswered for the residents.

Pfft... having a sign-up date of before 2005 just means you're obsolete to the new regime, who sincerely wishes you would phuck off.

Which should be seen as the very height of irony.

I've been trying out the SLU fora recently . . . and I have mixed feelings.

On the one hand, it certainly has much more functionality than the SL fora. And, in many of the ways that count, in terms of the sorts of things that get discussed and so forth, it is comparable with Res Ans.

I am as yet a bit uncertain about the "culture" there, though. On the hand, I was greeted and "befriended" very quickly there by a few people -- something that has NEVER happened to me here. On the other, I am afraid that I DO find it a bit more cliquey than here (although we certainly have our cliques here too). And while I have followed (and participated in) some very good discussions on the SLU, there frankly does seem to be a great tendency for people to simply spam arguments or posters with whom they disagree, using lolcats and the like. Also -- and this may just be an impression derived from still being an "outsider" there -- personal insult seems a more acceptable response there than here.

Again, though, some of these responses on my part may be a product of still not really feeling at home on the SLU fora.

Wow. Sounds like you had a bad experience. Have you been there lately? I have never felt anything but welcomed there by oldtimers and newtimers alike. There is a ton of new blood there and the entire feel of the place has changed in the last year or so.

IW, my name over there is Ray Figtree. I have the Raymond Figtree account there too but I forgot my password.

And Treasure, you can ask or say anything you want or start a thread on any topic under the sun. Most "interesting" topics start here: http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/zomgwtfbbqgtfololcats/

If anyone has anything but a positive experience over there, I will gladly give them a full refund.

There does seem to be a lot of lolcats over there but less photos of pie.

This shows you how much I know about things; I thought SLU meant Secondlife University! So I kept wondering what kinda courses were being offered. Never went there coz I hate the idea of snooty profs etc.
