http://www.slapt.me/phpBB3/index.php - Moderators have strong opinions against the present moves regarding adult content and xstreet, but tend to keep calm about them.

http://thatotherlife.com/ - Moderator often expresses very strongly worded opinions. No action is taken against contrary opinions, but the strong expression of the moderator can make the place seem intimidating even for those who agree with the moderator. :)

SLuniverse - I won't go there for an assortment of reasons.

http://www.slprofiles.com/forum/default.asp - Don't have knowledge enough about this place. I'd forgotten to bookmark it but knew it was out there so had to google the URL. Need to make a bookmark. :)

SL is not a "social networking platform". :(

Not yet but that's what M wants it to be. I don't have the link to hand but there's an interesting interview in January where he's positioning SL to attract the facebook/myspace crowd. Every "improvement" I've seen on the webside appears to point to his vision.

Whether it's sucessful or not remains to be seen. Certainly from a design perspective it's rubbish but these days web users appear to be conditioned to accepting second rate.

I went, signed up; looks big and scary. I see they already have a grammar corrector there too unless Pep has a hitherto unknown alt. I'll have to be careful there.

In the groups sub-forums are "BDSM" and "Let's Make Sexxy Time" for the more adult threads. You can not see them if you awe not signed in tho.

Whether or not the climate at SLU is to your liking is your choice of course, but there is a place to discuss just about any topic there, from SL and other VW's, SL business abd content creation, and any off topic topic you can think of. yes there is a different dynamic there, but that holds true of any "community". And not everyone will take to every community.

I WAS going to respond to this by noting that I got swiped at pretty hard in my first few real postings on SLU . . .

But then it occurred to me that the person who came after me there was actually someone whom I already knew from HERE . . . soooooo . . .

What are 'Buddy Lists'? I just noticed they have those, here, and also at SLU? I mean, if you are posting to a thread, anyone can see it, yes? And if it's a PM, only that person sees it. So a Buddy List provides what benefit, exactly?

There aren't any forums anywhere that hold a candle to the content creation forums here.

Good point.

I'm really glad this thread hasn't deteriorated into people criticizing other forums unlike some other threads on this topic. People should decide for themselves as each forum has its own personality.

True, which is why I have been on a fairly extended hiatus. I never really felt I fit in, though I posted fairly regularly for awhile. Something about the 'air' over there always makes me feel like I'm back in high school trying to avoid having my books knocked out of my arms. But this is about me of course; others mileage will vary and I would recommend folks check it out.

I will say that it's a highly intelligent group and the posts are informative, interesting and quite varied; lots of topics to chat about.

It's interesting to note that their is a thread somewhat paralleling this one in the General Discussion of SLU:

http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/general-sl-discussion/34021-if-second-life-forums-arent.html

Talk about the RA forum here starts about a third of the way through.

The end of the SL Forums doesn't mean the end of The Forum Cartel does it? I didn't think so, but I thought I'd ask and add a plug for the inworld group.

Two uses at SLU: (1) SLU has a blog feature, and you can make your blog posts buddies-only if you want to. (2) You can use the buddies list to see when your friends are logged into the forum.

--

SLU is definitely a bit different in tone from here - in some ways better, in some ways not as good - it depends upon who you are and what you are looking for. There's no doubt that there are a lot of really smart and knowledgable people - on any and every topic. There are also a lot of people who have known each other a very, very long time - not the same as a clique, because they don't all *like* each other, but there is a lot of shared history and that can make it feel cliquish to newcomers.

In my observation new folks who come in swinging and attacking get treated in kind; new folks who come in nice and express their opinions with respect are generally welcomed. It's important to remember even if one person gets on your case that it doesn't necessarily reflect the forum community as a whole. That one person may be as new as you are. :) Also, the most controversial and emotional threads tend to occur in the Politics, Religion, and Society forum - hardly surprising, considering the nature of those topics.

I've been an active member of the community on both (I am Carter-Madhu over there) and have gotten a lot out of both. In both places I have both given and received loads of information about SL, from technical help to scripting tips to favorite places to shop. And in both places I've met people who have gone on to be some of my closest friends in world, people I expect to keep in my life long after SL is out of our lives.

I find SLU intimidating. I'm sure I could get over that, but I have a bigger problem with it, which is that it isn't work-safe.

Someone pointed out that I could shut off all images in the preferences, but I did that once here, and it was a decidedly inferior experience.

There is Forum Cartel forum at forumcartel.com

and another alternative at http://2lf.informe.com/forum/

I'm betting on slapt.me, however, since I expect that people from the XStreetSL forums will end up there.

I've been trying out the SLU fora recently . . . and I have mixed feelings.

Don't say fora.

That has held true for a long time, but I think things have been tapering off in the past few months. But yeah, even after LL shut down most of the fun boards, you could always find good scripting/building advice here, that's for sure.

Once this place goes away, I reckon many of the helpful folks will migrate over to SLU. I hope they do, anyway.

Inferior to the experience at this forum?

Why do you say it's not work-safe though? The language can be harder than it is here, but offensive and pornographic content are forbidden there. (Seriously.)

Second Citizen's lack of moderation is not to my liking. Vive la difference!

To everyone trying to decide where to go, my suggestion is that you lurk a while at all the available options, read a bunch of posts, and think about which has the tone and the balance of SL-to-non-SL-related content that you think will suit you best. Another possibility is to participate in more than one; if that's time-prohibitive, you can pick-and-choose a combination of sections from each. For example, maybe the SL discussions at SLU seem active and lively, but you prefer to take the gloves of for political discussions and choose SC for that. Or something.

:)

There is Forum Cartel forum at forumcartel.com

It's actually down at the moment.

I tripped over a ferret and pulled out a cable. But the forums will be back.

Sorry 'bout that.
