Why do men pay for sl sex when there're so many orgy rooms?

I have used both Male and Female SL avatars. (I am absolutely fascinated by the sociology of SL and relation to gender roles, although a bit disappointed by the people running around as "Gangsta's" and whatnot, anywho...)

The look of the Female AV must be the primary mechanism which flags whether to hit on or not. Although I admit that I keep mostly to sandboxes, so location is no doubt a factor too.

My experience has been that I choose AVs which are fully clothed head to foot. No low-cut shirts, pants, whatever. Now I wouldn't say my AV choices look bad, but they tend to look quite serious and don't show much skin. This must flag as "unavailable" to the low-brow males, because in 2-ish months I've only been hit on twice, and both of those also hit on everything else in the area. I suspect that it does attract the attention of higher-brow ones, because my F AVs tend to get more visitors to whatever project I'm working on at the moment than the male ones. Those males who react to what the AV is doing at a higher rate than what the AV looks like (although a serious, but nice look is also a form of communication) are going to be more concerned with personality and skillset than the others.

Most F AVs I see wandering about tend to look like rather typical representations of what the media present as "beautiful" (and more importantly, "sexy,", and are quite similar to each other. Same with most M AVs.

I suspect you're simply trying to place the "fault" of getting hit on on the women, because you feel any attack on members of your gender are an attack on you. That's obviously not true, and my experience has not been that women "assume" men want them simply because they have Female AVs. They know that there's a substantial chance that there may be females behind those AVs, just as there is a substantial chance that there will be males behind female AVs. From the personal accounts in this thread, we can infer that the majority of unwanted sexual attention is coming from men, not women, which merely echoes real life.
From my experience in SL, I can also infer that most women wear a look which the media says is "sexy" on their AV, communicating to males that they are available. They don't realize that they're communicating this -- they simply want their AVs to look good, according to their standards. The issue is primarily one of cross-cultural communication gone awry.

wow not the brightest around. first u make an issue that the OP generalized men to pay for sex. Now YOU generalize all us men wanting to have sex with any woman in rl? I do not know what planet you coming from, or how desperate for sex you are in rl, but i can guarantee u that the majority of the men will not have or have the desire to have sex with just anyone. This includes me!

I did, however, say that "it's natural for RL men to want sex with almost any woman who is willing", and it's correct. Or to put it another way, men are naturally promiscuous, whereas women are not. Now, I don't know what planet YOU come from, but that's the normal nature of men here on Earth.
